1.
Well, yes - you're obviously a competent drummer. I'm sure crap drummers don't get quite so many offers.
competent, yeh, but I'm ace on bass and no-one offers me bass gigs!
2. I've been playing guitar since I was 7 (30 now) and never been in a band on guitar. I've played bass since I was 17 and have been in 2 bands on bass. I've played drums since I was 21 and already been in 5 bands on drums, and I get offers all the time. I never get offers on other instruments! So I guess it's not that drummers are particularly "promiscuous" but they just get invited to more bands, maybe due to a lack of supply?
3. He already tried disconnecting the earth on the amp plug and it worked?! I have had similar problems in the past. I managed to solve it with an old UPS I had knocking around. They're basically big batteries to keep servers running if you have a power cut, but I use one in between the mains and my amp and the hum is gone!
4. I have a TNT150 with the bi-amp outputs. I run the high output to a peavey classic 50 guitar amp. I often say "with my pedalboard, I can gig any amp, I don't care", and that's true, but if I lost my pedalboard for some reason, this would be the rig for me
5. I've met people who hate the ODB-3 but have never actually used one themselves. I would class that as snobbery? But you're right, it's not really directed at the brand, it's just at this one pedal
6. if the guy with the electric kit is good enough, you could probably put a half decent kit together with £200. Some of the deals going on ebay and facebook are mental
7. Like any other brand some pedals are great, some not so great. I have quite a few boss pedals that I love, but I did once give away a DS-1 as I just couldn't get a decent sound out of it no matter what I put into it! The only snobbery I've noticed is with the ODB-3, but whatever, I've seen John Stockman use his live with Karnivool
... LM tend to raise the volume when i play softer and smashes the sound when i dig deeper...
It's a limiter just like any other, and works quite well. It sounds like you had the threshold set too low
8. Bit of a weird one
9. well that's interesting, I'll have to catch you with the bodran some time!
10. rock covers do very well in stoke! Actually Headsticks do great in a small local pub, but in a local "venue" not so well. Going further afield to venues where people turn up expecting original music works very well. Weird! But yeh I was mainly on about the little pubs which we don't do any more, as I think these are the sorts of venues the OP is on about P.S I didn't know you had a bodran, didn't you have a full kit last time I saw you?
11. It sounds like you're after a very low gain subtle sort of dirt, so there's pretty much zero risk of damaging your rig Try over driving the pre-amp on your amp first, see how it sounds. The jackhammer is a very versatile pedal though, you might like it!
12. I love playing smaller venues, but I don't think I've ever actually been scared of the audience at a gig. Maybe that's because I'm always with a band and we'll back each other up? I've played some places that I'd be very intimidated by if I walked in for a pint, but didn't bother me when gigging. Weird
13. Deerstock festival. We were on the back of a lorry. We watched a band play some covers on the big fancy stage, then we did our (original) thing on the lorry, then watched some more covers on the big stage... What's that about? Anyway, we went down well and it was a lovely festival
14. I'm in a band with a couple of really good mates. When one of them starts talking, I like to play funky slap bass at extreme volumes. It winds him up. His counter is to play metallica very, very badly, at even more extreme volumes. It stops me pretty quick, then we have our discussion. Surely there's something he hates so much you can just play it at full whack every time he annoys you?
15. some bands need to do the same old stuff. This might be because of the venues they play and their clientèle or landlord/ladys. This could be dictated by the location of the band and their willingness to travel. It could be dictated by how well the band promote themselves and in what way. It may be because of the nature of the show they put on. However, it's a fact that originals bands can, and do, entertain a room full of people, and get paid for doing so.
16. I disagree on the tone! Very punchy sound, and very responsive to EQ/pedals
17. downer I've never tried mine with a different amp, (although I do tend to bypass the pre-amp these days) so I'm interested to see what you think
18. did you manage to try your head through the peavey cab?
19. Obviously each act is different, and some will be known for performing certain covers. All I know is that I was in an originals band that could entertain a whole pub for a night without being asked for mustang sally, and I'm in an originals band at the moment which can do the same.
20. much like the constant rotation of music in pubs and on radio2
21.
It was all coming from the combo. I was going to try and use my F1 but in the end the tone i was hearing (with everything flat) was just perfect. Of course this was in a dead sounding rehearsal room. Back there tomorrow night with a 5 string, just to see what it can do. I did try and lift it and, well, its not something i would consider buying. Its not un manageable but the days of me carrying something that heavy around is long gone (unless you count the bloody PA and guitar amps i still have to carry:)
I personally think that the pre-amp makes more tonal difference than the power amp or the cab, therefore if you're trying to replicate that TNT sound, you probably need a similar pre-amp for starters. You never know, a different pre-amp in front of your current rig might give you the sound you want
22.
So we can all stop playing Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed Girl, Summertime , Autumn Leaves etc and still get regular work?...
Yes, if you can entertain a room full of people, and you charge within the current market rate what I'm saying is that it's possible to entertain a room full of people, and please a landlord, without playing the same old covers
23. I absolutely love my TNT 15" combo. I wonder how much of the sound you love is coming from the speaker, and how much from the amp? Or are you plugging your own pre-amp into the effects return on the peavey?
24. I'm reminded of my old band The Premature Ejaculators. The music was raucous, and the lyrics were far too offensive to be enjoyed by anyone civilised, and yet whenever we played, we went down a storm. The only cover was "love comes in spurts" ...So I think Bilbo is right in that people ARE ready to experience something different, you just have to do it in the right way. Maybe it's just easier to engage people if you're playing the radio 2 playlist?
25. "...individual" implies you'd rather post an insult, which is rude Anyway, I play in an original folk(ish) band. We're not doing so many pubs now but we did for the last year or two. We never had a problem entertaining a pub packed with drinkers. I'm sure they'd normally be getting their "sex on fire" etc but as long as you put on a good show and engage with the audience, they will go with you IME
