1. you can make any bass fit the sound of the band, the key is to work together
2. PCI Audio Interfaces Maudio Delta 1010Lt x 2 (just one left now) Maudio Delta 44 x 1 These are PCI cards, not PCIe or PCI-X or Express, just plain old PCI They all work very well, can be used all at once to give you 20 analogue inputs. SPDIF on the 1010Lts gives you another 2 channels per card. The Delta 1010Lts come with the breakout cables, and the 44 comes with it's breakout box. £30 each, posted
3.
They've got a guitarist hidden backstage who uses a load of pedals to make it sound like he's playing a bass.....
Yep, he's using a music stand too. As soon as I noticed I left
4.
The difference in Hertz between notes a semitone apart depends upon which two notes as its a logarithmic scale (which is why the frets get closer together as you go up the neck of a bass) but if A is 440Hz then Ab one semitone down is 415.3
Interesting! So tuning to A432 would be about a third of a semi-tone down. It doesn't seem that significant really When I put a capo on to change a whole piece of music up a semi tone, it definitely changes the "feel" of the music, but I doubt that's anything to do with any "natural frequencies". I find the idea that EVERYTHING will sound better in one tuning or another a bit absurd
5. I'd say it's definitely possible that you can hear the difference, and different tunings probably suit different pieces of music. But, yeh, it's like putting a capo on isn't it? Dropping the song up or down a semitone... how many hertz is that?
6.
...I think that sound engineer...needs relieving of his seed.
That's a bit risque!! Are you offering to help?!
7.
I don't see the point of BEAD. Surely everyone needs to play notes on the G string?...
depends on the kind of music!
8. I'd put them in a similar bracket to the foo fighters actually. Great musicians playing good solid rock songs. I saw the foo fighters once and after an hour and a half of good solid rock songs I was suicidal. Each to their own
9. I always thought my band's timing was perfect, and I suppose in a way it was "perfect" but would speed up and slow down slightly for different sections of different songs. Not necessarily a bad thing! But playing to a click made us realise where we were changing tempo, and meant we at least had a choice as to whether to go with the natural feel of it, or whether to be super rigid
10. If you're jamming or writing original stuff then meeting up once a week would make total sense If you're learning/rehearsing pub covers once a week, to only gig 5 times a year, then it sounds like a total nightmare and I would get out now!!!
11. Cool, I'll check it out ASAP
12. indeed! What music are you making Fretnomore? Do you have a link for us to hear that board in action?
13. you can never tell until you try, but I would go Tuner phaser OD comp delay
14. It must have been the UAD one I think, which isn't VST and you need a UAD card. Oh well!
15. Back when I used to get Tape Op (no idea why that stopped!) they reviewed a VST tape sim next to a struder tape machine, and reckoned it was spot on. I wish I could remember the name of the plug-in now!
16. Hah, sorry, I wasn't taking the piss! Thanks, I will check out those chunking sections - good word for it!
17.
Are you sure..?
Yes! Very much so. I'm constantly trying to improve I'm playing drums in this band, it's loads of fun. The bassist is ace and lets me set up his pedal board and suggest basslines etc. The "singer" is quite a talented fiend indeed, to be able to switch from singing to "screaming" When you say "acoustic picking" I guess you mean the cleanish electric guitars? I might try them a little drier. This is the sort of comment that's very helpful Also on the bass, I think you're right, perhaps a low-mid boost would help, as long as it doesn't get in the way of the snare. Regarding the "fizzy" guitars, I hadn't noticed at all! Would you put a low pass in to cut everything over say 5-6KHz? The song will be on the next album, but whether we use this recording or not I'm not sure... that';s miles off yet and it sounded so good I wanted to get it out to showcase the studio. Thanks for all the feedback it's most appreciated!!
Can't really comment on the intricities of the recording other than it seems mixed well enough and I can hear all the instruments, but I really enjoyed the song. Sounds like early-Mudvayne I thought!
Interesting, I've not listened to mudvayne in years! I'll have to check them out, cheers!
18.
I assume the guy who does all that gets admin money from the kitty..??
shhh!
19. Nice one! I would also like to check out the band, give us a link!
20. I was in a band that took this all very seriously. We put in a hell of a lot of effort, but it turns out we didn't know what we were doing. In the folk band I'm with now, at first I assumed that it was easier to get gigs as the music is more commercial than my old rock band. Then I started noticing the posters up in all the pubs we play. It turns out our frontman/booker/boss actually mails posters out to venues a month in advance, and then calls them to check they have them, and politely asks them to put them up. Then he actually talks to the audience when we're on stage! And afterwards! And he networks with all the promoters etc. It seems obvious now, but ten years ago we really thought all we had to do was land a CD on the right desk, and we went to extreme lengths to try and achieve that to no success.
21. ...sh*t music though! We recorded it a few times to a few different metronomes but none of them had the "feel" of this - without the click. I was worried it'd sound sloppy but I think it works
22. what I wouldn't give for a T-Max
23. I've never practised bass to a metronome but do it on drums fairly often. I love the sense of confidence it gives me, in that I'm not keeping time, the metronome is. It doesn't work for every song though, some songs need to speed up and slow down
24.
Yes, when you find a good one you have to do pretty much whatever it takes to keep him - even if in all other ways he's an arse!
Could someone let my bands know? (I'm on drums at the moment )
25. OP did say...
...focus groups have been done with bands and distributors prior to this...
So although it looks like it'll never be a viable proposition for most of us, clearly there's a market out there for it?!
