1. indeed! What music are you making Fretnomore? Do you have a link for us to hear that board in action?
2. you can never tell until you try, but I would go Tuner phaser OD comp delay
3. It must have been the UAD one I think, which isn't VST and you need a UAD card. Oh well!
4. Back when I used to get Tape Op (no idea why that stopped!) they reviewed a VST tape sim next to a struder tape machine, and reckoned it was spot on. I wish I could remember the name of the plug-in now!
5. Hah, sorry, I wasn't taking the piss! Thanks, I will check out those chunking sections - good word for it!
6.
Are you sure..?
Yes! Very much so. I'm constantly trying to improve I'm playing drums in this band, it's loads of fun. The bassist is ace and lets me set up his pedal board and suggest basslines etc. The "singer" is quite a talented fiend indeed, to be able to switch from singing to "screaming" When you say "acoustic picking" I guess you mean the cleanish electric guitars? I might try them a little drier. This is the sort of comment that's very helpful Also on the bass, I think you're right, perhaps a low-mid boost would help, as long as it doesn't get in the way of the snare. Regarding the "fizzy" guitars, I hadn't noticed at all! Would you put a low pass in to cut everything over say 5-6KHz? The song will be on the next album, but whether we use this recording or not I'm not sure... that';s miles off yet and it sounded so good I wanted to get it out to showcase the studio. Thanks for all the feedback it's most appreciated!!
Can't really comment on the intricities of the recording other than it seems mixed well enough and I can hear all the instruments, but I really enjoyed the song. Sounds like early-Mudvayne I thought!
Interesting, I've not listened to mudvayne in years! I'll have to check them out, cheers!
7.
I assume the guy who does all that gets admin money from the kitty..??
shhh!
8. Nice one! I would also like to check out the band, give us a link!
9. I was in a band that took this all very seriously. We put in a hell of a lot of effort, but it turns out we didn't know what we were doing. In the folk band I'm with now, at first I assumed that it was easier to get gigs as the music is more commercial than my old rock band. Then I started noticing the posters up in all the pubs we play. It turns out our frontman/booker/boss actually mails posters out to venues a month in advance, and then calls them to check they have them, and politely asks them to put them up. Then he actually talks to the audience when we're on stage! And afterwards! And he networks with all the promoters etc. It seems obvious now, but ten years ago we really thought all we had to do was land a CD on the right desk, and we went to extreme lengths to try and achieve that to no success.
10. ...sh*t music though! We recorded it a few times to a few different metronomes but none of them had the "feel" of this - without the click. I was worried it'd sound sloppy but I think it works
11. I've never practised bass to a metronome but do it on drums fairly often. I love the sense of confidence it gives me, in that I'm not keeping time, the metronome is. It doesn't work for every song though, some songs need to speed up and slow down
12.
Yes, when you find a good one you have to do pretty much whatever it takes to keep him - even if in all other ways he's an arse!
Could someone let my bands know? (I'm on drums at the moment )
13. OP did say...
...focus groups have been done with bands and distributors prior to this...
So although it looks like it'll never be a viable proposition for most of us, clearly there's a market out there for it?!
14.
I've had a tweak on most of my setting since I posted this and removed the compression entirely. Change of bass and I found the lack of expression to be annoying - it was more noticeable on the new bass.
Is the new bass a bit louder or quieter? If so, maybe re-setting the threshold would have helped
15. Have you put an ad in the "other musicians..." forum on here? I've not seen it and I'm always checking out the drummer wanted ads. Not that I have the TIM but you never know
16. The latest track from my band CreepJoint... https://soundcloud.com/creepjoint/overture-demo This has the heaviest drum sound I've ever done (kicks in after about 2 minutes) and I love it! The bass is sounding pretty fiendish too. I'd love to hear some comments on the sounds/mix
17. when I can be bothered, I like to set up my pedals in such a way as to have a clean signal, blended with another signal made up of two chains of effects in parallel. Plugging all this into a bass amp is OK, but when I plug the clean (with a bit of comp) into my bass amp, and the rest of the effects into my guitar amp, it really shines If I was trying to achieve this with a bass amp alone, I imagine I would need a graphic with all of the high mids boosted
18. yeh I would say it can be done, but you have to do some pretty counter intuitive EQ on a bass amp to get that sort of full range sound out of it.
19.
On the whole everything sounds better when it's louder - especially rock music. It's making it still sound good when it's quiet that is the true skill.
Hmmm, very interesting. One of my favourite sounding albums is Evil Empire by RATM. It sounds pretty average until you turn it up. I personally thought that was a good thing as it forced you to turn it up to hear it in all it's glory. Maybe not!?
20.
Oasis are probably the most over-rated band of all time so I couldn't care less what Noel Gallagher says. (i'm not a Kaiser Chiefs fan either, but being in Oasis doesn't give him the right to look down on everyone else.... you were total balls Noel)
Surely he has the right to criticise others' music, just as you've just criticised his?
21. it's very evident when you're mixing a recording. If you don't mix loud enough, your mix will be too bassy
22. The second time I ever attempted live sound was as a last minute favour to a friend. I got to the little pub, it was already packed with people, and they had no idea where the in house PA was. Once I'd found it, I noticed a multicore going into a wall, and then a box on the other end, but no labelling at all. I got it all set up as it should have been, but for whatever reason, I couldn't get any amount of reasonable level on the vocal mics without feedback, and this was with no monitors. A pub full of people holding their ears saying "f***ing hell mate" was enough to put me off for life!
23. I'm always happy not to soundcheck, but going on for a 5 minute line check before your set doesn't look very professional A lot of venues still have analogue mixers with no option to store a mix, in which case, I really don't understand why they soundcheck every band on the bill, but they still do All I know is, from my very limited experience of live sound, I would not want that job!! I can mix recorded music all day long, but live sound is somehow beyond me.
