1. I can't see anything in your list which should lose low end. Have you tried each pedal individually to find out where the problem is?
2.
How can it be loud if you're using earplugs? Isn't that a bit like using 1000W lightbulbs at home and then wearing sunglasses to reduce the glare? What's the point?
Without volume the low frequencies won't vibrate your balls, and surely that's what everyone wants? I mean, it's why we all play bass, right?
... If they worked in a factory ear protection would be mandatory....
This is very important to me. I don't understand why there's no legislation for this. I know I said it last week but I just don't understand why we have people calling themselves professional sound engineers who then subject themselves to volume levels which are demonstrably damaging their hearing. Not just theirs, but all the staff, and all the customers. When I go to a venue on the rare occasion I've forgotten my ear plugs I feel like I'm being assulted through the ears. I play drums in a few bands. The rock band I play LOUD, the reggae band not so much, the folk band I play quiet. I wear ear plugs for all of them
3.
Whatever happened to Big Beef Chief? ;-)
dissappeared back up voderman I think
4. I'm not an internet tough guy and if you suggest I am I'll write a really long post about why you're wrong
5. My mate and I used to listen to about 6 or 7 different Joni Mitchell albums while we worked. Just beautiful music and lyrics. I'd better dig the CDs back out!
6. When I saw them on Jools... Haha, don't know the song sorry but I would recommend playing about with the pedal as you'll learn a lot. I learned all about effects and how to use them by playing with my first Zoom multi effects years ago. So maybe try all the different synth models and play with their controls. Not the quickest solution I suppose but worth it in the end
7. I'd quite like a legal limit on the volume level of gigs. Not necessarily one of these sound limiters that trips off the power, but just a rule to keep it to X level. When I go to tiny venues and the PA is whacked up to compete with ridiculous full stacks and everyone is standing there without ear plugs... this is doing permanent damage to their ears and no-one seems to care.
8. go to devices and then VST connections (I think) and it'll say which input on the soundcard is going to which input in Cubase, but if it's just a stereo interface it'll have one stereo input by default, left being 1 and right being 2. when you add a mono channel to record, set the input to the right one and you're done
9. not usually but I played friday, saturday, sunday, and now I'm trying mot to fall asleep at my desk!
10. that's great untune, very useful! All the RME units I've looked at have minimal analogue inputs meaning I'd have to get a bunch of ADAT converters. Fine, but the cheaper ADAT stuff all have pre-amps built in, which I don't need. The bigger MOTU units seem quite well regarded in terms of reliability, but their drivers aren't considered as stable as RME The most attractive deal I've found is that 24 i/o on Ebay but it is out of my budget... May be best to bite the bullet and stick it on a credit card
11.
Hey Tom This is possible. Our Keyboard player's calendar is synced up with the band one, I also have a personal one for managing all my other gigs and personal life. All are linked to the same calendar on my phone, it's the only wat I know what I'm doing day to day. On my phone it's in the calendar settings > add an account and continue form there. You can also do this in your browser on the google calendar.
Nice one, thanks!
12. Go with whatever works, but... if you prefer the sound bypassing your pre-amp you might look into replacing your amp with a poweramp
13. it's not just down to you, your drummer needs to be addressing it to. It's all about contrast, so if it sounds like it drops out from one section to another, he should play a smaller sounding cymbal in the previous section, and a bigger sounding cymbal in the empty section. IE if currently he switches from a crash in the chorus to a ride in the solo, he should instead swap the two around, or maybe go from crash to open hats. I've always played in 3 peices. I've used a variety of different ways to fill space. Distortion is probably the most popular. Octave down or up can work. Playing chords works really well for me but can be difficult to get them to sound good (normlly sounds muddy). I use a dirty sound with loads of high mids when playing chords.
14. don't think so but it's pretty recent
15. I use google calendar for all my personal commitments. I wouldn't necessarily want everyone in every band to be able to see all these, but I like that I have all my gigs listen on my phone. Is there a way for me to combine my personal google calendar with a group google calendar?
16. lots of people saying no-one plays them but I'm pretty sure Juan Aldarete played one with The Mars Volta, and they were pretty big weren't they?
17. It depends what sort of sound you've got. If it's a standard low end rumble masked by a bunch of guitars, no-one will care. If you're doing something creative where you take up much more sonic-space than that, then it really matters.
18. ...or maybe it'd be better to save up for a behringer X32? This way I could get rid of my desk and interface all together
19. Can't check out your music so I'm not certain these would be right, but near us the best venues are The Sugarmill, The Underground, The Exchange, Bunker 13 - all in Hanley. The Rigger in Newcastle-under-Lyme is also great.
Get in touch with Rock City in Nottingham, they frequently put multi band sets together downstairs in the basement so if you booked that for a night they could probably supply local supports which would bring in some locals who might not be familiar with your band.
good call!
20. cheers Dunc What awful weather! I turned up hung over from a gig the previous night. I tried to beat the hangover with an ale from the bar. Can't remember what it was called but it was clearly the house ale. Tasted like cold coffee that'd been filtered through some dirty old sports socks... I enjoyed playing but made a rather hasty exit
21. couple more questions - are there any ADAT units with analogue inputs but no pre-amps? I guess that would make it cheaper? This bundle seems ideal: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111363268715?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2661 24 analogue inputs and the ability to expand later, but, it's £850!
22.
First post in this thread! Here's my humble offering - still a work-in-progress Board A (on right) is my 'Utility/Drive' board - Signal chain is Bass > TU-2 > (split/bypass) SansAmp Para-Driver > Rack Crossover Ch A, bypass on SansAmp goes to the Bad Monkey OD then on to Rack Crossover Ch B. Rack Crossover low pass > PA amp > 2x 112 stack Board B (on left) is my 'FX' board - signal chain is Crossover high pass > Palmer D'accapo reamper > Bass Big Muff Pi > CEB-3 Chorus > 110 Combo amp. Big Muff is set to 'Dry' so it passes some clean signal through. Have got room for a couple more pedals, thinking of the JOYO Vintage Drive to go in between the Palmer and the Big Muff to add some drive to the clean blend signal there. Cheers Ian
This rig is getting me excited. Can you photograph the whole thing? Are you gigging it?
23. My current set-up gives me 16 inputs. It seems to me I'll need more than one unit. The MOTU stuff is cool, I've been watching a load of them on Ebay, always seem to miss the good deals. I was thinking, there are lot of 8 or 16 channel interfaces which run on USB. Surely there are some which will work with more than one at a time?
I take it you don't need pre-amps because you're going to be using the interface in conjunction with a desk that already has them? Which desk?
Yeh, I'm using a Mackie - 16:8 at the moment but hoping to get my 24 channel one serviced soon. Not sure on the model of them. I like the pre-amps though and have a bunch of other pre-amps I use when I need something more "delicate" The reason I like to use a desk is that it allows me to do 4 different headphone mixes off the auxilliaries with EQ and definitely no latency or interference from the computer side
24. I was hoping to get my 16 inputs for my £500, I think the 828 mk3 plus an ADAT unit would take me out of that range?
25. Sorry, all obvious questions I should have answered in the OP USB, FW, PCI would all be fine. I'd not heard of Thunderbolt before, I guess I could get a PCI Thunderbolt card so that'd be fine too Yes, 16 analogue inputs, I don't mind what connector they're on. It might be that you recommend I get X interface with ADAT and Y ADAT unit which would be fine too. I just need a total rig to give at least 16 analogue inputs and to be expandable Yeh I need 24bit
