I used a PF500 with a compact in an 8 piece band, and needed the volume on 5. The PF500 produces 350 watts at 8 ohms. With that in mind, I`d discount the Reidmar, purely on power. The Ampeg/Barefaced pairing was very nice - if you like Ampeg sound, putting them with Barefaced Cabs is great, as they really put out what goes in, no (or very very little) colouration of sound. And adding a Midget in - well I did this, and it sounded very good. One of my all time fave rigs I`ve owned.
I quite like the Ampeg sound. I had a 2x15 fliptop in the late sixties. What does worry me about the PF500 is the reliability issue. Is it just a small number that keep cutting out or does the internet exaggerate these issues?

Thanks for your comments. I have tried the Trace (unplugging the combo speaker) with the Compact and didn't really like the sound. I think going through the 2x15s is really what I'm looking for. I'd not considered the GK MB500 but having just read a few reviews, it seems there's a lot of love out there . The ideal situation would be for someone to offer me another Compact cheap and I start unscrewing the head out of the combo.

At the moment I'm using a 300watt Trace Elliot 1x15 combo along with a Barefaced Compact. I love the sound but the Trace weighs a ton and sort of defeats the purpose of getting a lightweight cab. I need a small, lightweight head to go with the Compact. Money is tight so I've shortlisted a few possibilities to go with the Compact. I may add another cab at a later date but for now it's one cab only. 1 EBS Reidmar, only 125watts into an 8 ohm cab, will it drive a Compact solo. 2 Ampeg PF 500 3 Ashdown MIBASS 550 4 Harley Benton 500 The above list is pretty much my order of preference at the moment and living in the sticks means I'm not in much of a position to try the amps before I take the plunge. My band is a 7 piece classic/ prog rock outfit and some gigs are without PA support. Can anyone on here who's tried any of the above amps with a Compact help me out with your views? Steve.

"The Hayman 40 40".....anybody got a spare 7 grand?!?!

I had one in the early 70s. Heavy, crap sound, unless you like lots of treble. Swapped it for a Fender 12 string. -
Covers bands "openers" what do you start with?
pikeman replied to witterth's topic in General Discussion
We start with "Shine on you crazy diamond" which gives the singer another 8 minutes at the bar. -
I was planning on pressing the "buy" button today on the 500 watt head but after reading the last few posts I'm holding off.

I used HH gear back in the day. Good to see them back with a new range. The 120 sounds interesting.

Not a straight fit but not far off. Half an hour with a file sorted it. Being a 9 hole plate (like the Ryder) the holes lined up pretty well, I just had to make a couple of fresh holes. The control holes were way too small. I wasn't expecting much for the money but was very surprised by the quality....3 ply too. They do a red tort plate, I;ve found this one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Red-Tortoise-Shell-Pickguard-3-Ply-Scratch-Plates-Precision-Bass-PB-Guitar-/260889298413?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3cbe36c5ed Steve.

I don't know if I'll ever stop modding my Dark Ryder, I'm having a lot of fun with it and using it for rehearsals( when it's in one piece). Recent updates include one of John's wiring harnesses with a PIO cap and a blue sparkle scratchplate which cost the princely sum of £7 delivered from China ( and really nice it is too ).

I ordered yet another of John's wiring harnesses for a P bass. Super quick delivery and really well put together. I've not installed it yet as I'm still waiting for parts from another supplier but hey, John made it so I know it will work fine. If you're looking to upgrade your wiring then John's your man. Cheers mate.
Just spotted this Steve! A mystery guitar stand has had Carl and I confused all week - case now closed I know Carl was interested in doing a deal with you on your Selmer; next time you're down our way we can return your stand and talk valves! (P.S, the mix's are turning out well - should all be finished by Saturday evening )
Thanks Adrian, good to hear the mix is coming along well too. If Carl wants to have a listen to the Selmer just drop me a PM on here and we can arrange things. I can drop by pretty much any time. Good to hear my stand is in good hands. Steve.

I did some recording last week at Sham Studios (and forgot to pick up my guitar stand Biggsy ) It's a great place to hold the Bash. I'll be along with a JV Squier Precision, Barefaced Compact and whatever amp I'm using at the time. Looking forward to it and meeting fellow BCers. Steve.

I've just picked up a Barefaced Compact I bought from Dan. Looks very good, haven't tried it out yet and it's killing me. Dan was a pleasure to deal with, answered mail very promptly and the cab was exactly as described. Thanks to Alan (Dan's dad) for bringing the cab up to darkest Norfolk and thank you Dan for all your help .

Which bassline inspired you to pick up the bass?

Thanks for the heads up. Just ordered 3 sets of Legacy for just over £20 delivered. I hope they're OK, not tried these before but the reviews are good and at this price well worth a punt. -
