The sound of Dr Dre's early '90s productions. Listen to The Chronic or Doggystyle.
Ahh, I get ya. I love those albums! Some great bass playing "Gin and Juice" is a personal favourite!
Whereas I think the low-pass on a Q-Tron is the funkiest sound you can get from just a filter on bass. One thing I do like doing though is setting up an envelope-following band-passed fuzz on my Octavius Squeezer, with a pretty quick attack and decay, and mixing it with a soloed OC-2 -1 Oct signal. The envelope BP fuzz sounds really nerdy and weedy but if you add the octaver underneath it's a great sound. Very G-Funk.
Sounds nice, what's G-Funk?
Another vote for Laklands here. The John Osborn Signature Flats. I believe GHS Precision Flats are very similar. .
If you believe the "who makes what string" thread, they're exactly the same! Gotta love those Lakkies! -
As the title says, I've been looking at getting an envelope filter to fill up my pedalboard and give that funk into my tone. The problem is, there's so many! Janek is swearing by the DOD FX25 (older version without blend) but I'd like to see what you guys think. I'd like to spend less than £100 in the preowned market, and another notable point is that I use flatwounds on my bass, anyone here used that with a funk box?
/end thread
Great, hobbcraft it is then!

As a pedalboard virgin (soon to pop my cherry thanks to Nature_1) I was wondering what people use for Velcro (eg. Special made, B&Q own brand etc.) why they use this and why? I have my university performance next Thursday and would like to get my pedals all firmly in place on my new(ish) Pedaltrain Mini I know it's a boring topic, but it's better than some things we talk about! Thanks, Alec
Probably the way it's going. Can you lot calm down, if this behaviour continues, it'll be warning time. And being New Year and all that we don't want that do we?
Please do lock it, I've not had a good day, and even I can see this is getting out of hand...
Nobody and that's partly the problem. Hence gangnam style is the most played tune on the radio right now.
What's wrong with gangnam style?
My dad's harder than your dad. And he's an entertainer...
My dad's a drunk, and it's quite funny, does that count?

Really well done, we should spam the booker prize HQ with copies, but I want one too...
Unless its Colin Farrell who can only do one accent............. Seriously though, you've raised an interesting point, What if bassist X auditioned for a gig with band Y who are highly regarded within a certain genre, say Brit Pop. After the auditioning process the band realises that bassist X is the most suitable in terms of technique and attitude and offer him the slot. However bassist X is endorsed by company Z and is obliged contractually to play their basses. The basses company Z produce are not what would normally be used by a Brit Pop band and Band Y tell Bassist X that he must use another company's product. Obviously Bassist X would have to explain to Band Y that he cannot use another bass. Does band Y allow bassist X to use the bass from company Z therefore employing the most suitable person for the job (musically at least) or do they move on to another bassist who is willing to play whatever is required aesthetically but is a weaker musician technically? Getting a bit off topic; IMO the only reason why image has such a strong influence on musical genres is because people are too willing to go along with the trends and therefore become just another indie bassist with a stingray or a punk bassist with a precision or a prog bassist with boutique 6 string or whatever cliche you may care to add.
Agreed with Colin, I think he tries to put on a new one, but can't... poor thing Interesting point, I honestly think that I would go to the bassist with the more suitable bass, as pop music is so intertwined with fashion and image. But as it has been said before, even if it was a company like Zon or BC Rich, you'd think that, to keep an endorsee, especially one in a pop band with lots of exposure they'd produce something for them, even a one off...
Well, I've just finished reading this entire thread, and one thing has become clear to me. There ain't half some twats on this forum!
+ f***ing 1
Janek Gwizdala?....*giggles* I played for a living more than ten years of my life so I know what Iam talking about. I left that stinky world voluntary, as a student you're getting into it now so it's hard for me to make my point clear due to the differences in experience but thanks anyway.
Yeah, please do enlighten us to the ways that you must be incredible to laugh at Janek's name. Even if in you're opinion you're ten times the bassist he is, he still deserves your respect. I'll refer you to the "how to behave on a Internet forum" thread in off topic for further instructions. Or maybe your too busy being a much better bassist than all of us put together to read it?

I traded my Marcus Miller on here for a Lakland JO5 (skyline range) Never been so impressed by a bass. I can't see myself sellin this, ever! It's been my main bass since I got it (7 months ago) and have used it on some high profile gigs and never been disappointed by the tone coming out of this monster! The only way it could ever be replaced is if John Shuker made me a similar bass, to my exact specifications, but that would involve a lot of money...

are there any super bands with poor bass players?
alstocko replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
I think this thread (and other similar threads) proves that most people on here who play pop and rock oriented musical instruments have absolutely no idea what it means to be a professional, or indeed amateur, songwriting, performing and recording musician in a pop or rock band. Maybe it's just bass player disease. The poor f***er at the back in his worn out Alain Caron t-shirt and stonewash jeans, the 'keep music live' sticker on the 8x10 they had to buy a new car for to get it to the Pig & Dipshit, the constant moaning that the guitard (sic) keeps dialling in too much 460khz so the nice Stingray with the hang tags and mint OHSC can't be heard properly, the lack of appreciation by the rest of the band of the sheer effort you put in getting that Chancellor line nailed ... This thread proves that if all you care about is bass, you are f***ed as a musician. You need to grow out of that sh*t Happy new year
I agree to an extent (like with all your posts! ) that people on here can get too obsessed with bass, and I can be a culprit at times! Although, what I think the OP was getting at (or at least what I'm getting at!) is somebody no matter who it is, or how technical they are, how well they gel with a band. Off the top of my head, the only example I can think of is non-bass related. Dave Weckl. He is an incredible musician, but whenever he plays with anybody apart from his feature band, I feel the music doesn't sit right. I think this is due to the fact that he is used to "overplaying" as the main attraction of his own band, and his incredible technical skill gets in his own way, so people like Eric Hartland get the job instead (still a great player, but plays just what's needed). But hey ho, he still gets the gigs, and I don't, so what I can I say about it. Nothing. I can't think of any bass players who play like this. I would say that Mark Anthony and the others do their job well enough that they inspire players to pick up the instrument, or at least not to turn their music off. Rant over. -
One of you is a musician while the other is an entertainer. Simple. Entertainers don't like the idea though so they think they are musicians...hence the confusion. A true musician doesn't approach music from an economical or an image-fixated standpoint. A musician cares about sound and creation, not how many chicks he'll have because he looked cool or the check he may get for moving his ass behind a fender. f*** the music industry.
Firstly, I do not mean to be offensive in anything I say, but I'm not going to sugar coat it. I respect your opinion, but as someone who pays the bills (as a student, so not fully professional yet) here are my two cents worth. Talk to Janek Gwizdala about this and try and tell him that he's not a "true musician" for saying that he "wouldn't turn up to a gospel or pop gig with his signature Fodera". Just because someone values the image part of music AS WELL as the aural side doesn't make them any less of a musician, just more aware of their target audience. I'll give a comparable example, you're playing a Jazz gig on NYE at an upmarket establishment, what do you wear? Do you wear your ripped jeans and t short because you're a classic rock guy (hypothetically of course!) or do you adapt to the gig and suit up? I know which of person would be sent home and which person would be invited back to play again (if the music is at the same high standard with both people of course!) If you're going to take the approach "f*** the music industry", gett ready for it to f*** you, because you're going to struggle to make a penny when you're not adapted to play the game by someone else's rules. You don't see an actor kicking off because they can't us the same accent for each part they play. The predjudice exists, so either adapt and learn what the public/your employer/your audience sees as "appropriate" to your gig, or disappear with it. Imagine if Pino played all his stuff with John Mayer on a Fodera, all the notes would still be right, but the whole image of a 60s Blues Rock outfit would be wrong, and he would be told to play something else, or leave (Janek had a similar experience recently with a pop act telling him that he had a gig but needed a precision to play) Like it or not (I personally don't like getting called for my markbass gear etc by the way!), you have to learn that this is how the industry works now, and has for years. Sorry for the long rant.

I notice that people at the moment opt for the PSU rather than a daisy chain setup, why not choose the latter? (I have both options available to me ATM) Thanks, Alec

Hey guys, as I'm not the biggest gear head when it comes to these things, I thought I'd pitch this to you. My Lakland JO5 has been buzzing more than usual recently. About 50% of the time that I turn my amp on a loud hum comes up, and then goes away as long as I have contact with the strings, control plate etc. I know that they're single coil jazz pickups in there, but surely they shouldn't make this much noise should they? What's weird ing me out is that it only happens 50% of the time. The other times its just normal. Earthing problem perhaps? Thanks, Alec
'Kind Of Blue' is my all-time favourite recording in any genre.
Couldn't agree with you more! Well done!

I have just one five string (Lakland JO5) that fits the bill for me. His signature flats, and I'm away for any gig. I've seriously considered getting a P, but I can't really afford this (apart from over drafting) and I'm moving abroad in 18 months so I'd probably have to sell the second one on anyway!
was he on it..?? never knew why he was kicked out/left? Not that I follow them that closely, just that he was on the first proper gig I went to...
You know, I'm not sure if he is... Never been a huge follower of them
