1. anything with Bono.
2. Elixirs for me. They tend to stay what if consider suitably fresh sounding for a good 5/6 months. Last time I tried Rotosounds they didn't sound remotely fresh at all. Awful things (opinion before I get barraged).
3.
Trial and error - if it sounds good it IS good, and vice-versa.
^ This. Take the time and work out what does what sound wise
4. Cool novelty but not much else I imagine. I'll stick to 5 strings.
5. From a personal standpoint I would go to a venue I enjoy being in and I will go see bands who's music I enjoy. I don't go see music I don't enjoy (It's actually dawned on me that I don't like seeing live music very often). I wouldn't want people coming to my bands gigs just out of -what seems like- pity. If that means playing to a small amount of people then so be it.
6. +1 ^ Playing is great as always. Really enjoy watching your YouTube videos
7. Almost any of these 1 man acoustic guitar singer songwriter acts. The only I've heard that I actually enjoy is Jon Gomm the rest of them seem to be playing the exact same song over and over again to my ears.
8. Shame that things like this happen. I can't say I would have bought something of such high value from a member with no posts but it shouldn't have to be a worry. Saying that, my only issue in the marketplace here was with a mod! As Ped said, thankfully it doesn't happen often.
9. I'd be more than happy to go to another Scottish bass bash. Would offer help organising it but quite frankly I'd be more of a hinderance than a help!
10. I have a complete inability to comfortably play any bass with less than 24 frets. Everything just seems further away and more of a stretch. Weirdly I feel perfectly at home when using a bass with more than 24 fret, current bass has 26 and is great to play.
11.
Say 'Thanks, but you're a much better girl than I am...'
Not sure she was in all honesty.
12. Only been to one but it involved a pub and curry the night before, going to a bit hall with loads of fellow bass players (and basschatters), meet people, talk all things bass, try out a few basses I otherwise wouldn't have been able to and then watch a masterclass by a very talented bass player. You're right. They're pretty awful really. In all seriousness I enjoyed it but if it isn't your thing then so be it.
13. Bought a Pedalboard from Jim on behalf of a friend. Arrived quickly and as described (friend is happy with it!). Would have no hesitation dealing with Jim again. Cheers
14. I don't get embarrassed as such but I just seem to have an in-built cynicism that just assumed I'm having the piss ripped out me. I'm sure it's a horribly unhealthy mind-set but it's just my first instinct whenever I get a compliment and usually ends in me mumbling "Thanks" then heading off. I'm aware I come across as an arsehole of the highest calibre when I do this but I seem unable to respond with anything else. I had some girl at a gig a month or so back say (just as we were leaving the venue) "I'm a bass player and you're much better than me!". How the hell do you reply to that!?
15. Never had experience of this myself but a few months back we were playing a gig and about 20 seconds before we were due to go on I see the singer clutching his stomach declaring he may vomit. Turns out he's lactose intolerant and had a cheeseburger just before. That was worrying.
16. As has been said, just looks like the bubinga to me. Very pretty bass and the fretboards a real nice looking cut too!
17. I know how you feel. I wouldn't mind one...without a huge neck though
18. Almost there
19.
But when he plays the same bass as one I own it sounds nothing like mine, so ultimately like all bass reviews useless.
It's a good starting point though in my mind as you get a general idea of how it'll sound. Not great but it's better than nothing.
20. If you still enjoy it then you're doing it right IMO, regardless of ability! I'm just a few months shy off the 5 year mark and I think I'm probably a little below average for this time but try not to let it bother me! As has been said, the more you know the more you don't know.
21. Pictures would help I imagine. Give Jon a message and (assuming they are still the pickups that came with the bass) he'd know?
22. I can understand why people hate when there is an excessive use of slapping or done to a level which is far above or below the standard you'd want but I see no issue with a little bit of appropriate slappage. I never use a plectrum but I still find it quite good to hear how it sounds (roughly) when one is used.
23.
That'd be Mel Brown. I actually quite like a lot of what he plays in those videos but when I look at his right hand technique I actually start to get cramp myself!
Had to look up these videos on youtube there...that really can't be good long term for his his wrist!? With regards to the whole "there is no bad technique" I think it just varies person to person. I had to completely change my right hand technique last year because I was getting problems in my wrist from it. I would say that was bad. Sound-wise it was the same as what I do currently.
24. I find the GAK demos to be pretty much as bad as they could possibly be. I can't complain though because I doubt I could do better than either of these.
25. Generally whatever few albums are appealing to me most at the time. Most recently it has been Alpha/Omega by Periphery.
