1. Almost there
2.
But when he plays the same bass as one I own it sounds nothing like mine, so ultimately like all bass reviews useless.
It's a good starting point though in my mind as you get a general idea of how it'll sound. Not great but it's better than nothing.
3. If you still enjoy it then you're doing it right IMO, regardless of ability! I'm just a few months shy off the 5 year mark and I think I'm probably a little below average for this time but try not to let it bother me! As has been said, the more you know the more you don't know.
4. Pictures would help I imagine. Give Jon a message and (assuming they are still the pickups that came with the bass) he'd know?
5. I can understand why people hate when there is an excessive use of slapping or done to a level which is far above or below the standard you'd want but I see no issue with a little bit of appropriate slappage. I never use a plectrum but I still find it quite good to hear how it sounds (roughly) when one is used.
6.
That'd be Mel Brown. I actually quite like a lot of what he plays in those videos but when I look at his right hand technique I actually start to get cramp myself!
Had to look up these videos on youtube there...that really can't be good long term for his his wrist!? With regards to the whole "there is no bad technique" I think it just varies person to person. I had to completely change my right hand technique last year because I was getting problems in my wrist from it. I would say that was bad. Sound-wise it was the same as what I do currently.
7. I find the GAK demos to be pretty much as bad as they could possibly be. I can't complain though because I doubt I could do better than either of these.
8. Generally whatever few albums are appealing to me most at the time. Most recently it has been Alpha/Omega by Periphery.
9. Looking great!
10. Only used a Behringer amp once but actually preferred it to some of the Ampeg amps I've used in the past.
11.
Stand next to the guitarist instead?
Nah I need him to distract from my playing
12.
Do you have a Shadows fixation, but cant remember the rest of the moves?
I never knew there were any moves in the first place
Add in some side to sides as well. Never mind the shadows, just makes you look bigger and more interesting on stage.
I tried this but singer kept complaining as the headstock smacked his face a few times
13. I'm more of a head nod/"hen pecker". I tend to tap my foot only when it's really coming upto sections where I'm playing solo or without drums so there's only maybe 3/4 parts in the current set where I foot tap. I have noticed that I seem to walk a step back and then forward again quite regularly...no clue why though.
14. I can't really speak for ones I've owned but the woods used can vary drastically in weight and occasionally a really heavy one is produced. I will say I have saw people on here talking about their basses which weighed a lot, had one myself that was just over the 6kg mark. I would say if you're not already try a padded strap of sorts. Mono straps seem to get good reviews. Cameron
15. I'm in the camp of "if it doesn't have 5 strings I probably can't play it properly". I just feel most 'at home' when I'm using a 5 string (tuning is pretty much irrelevant as I often use quite a few). I've never understood the whole mentality behind the B string only being for lower notes or when it doesn't get used it's just in the way. It's a bit annoying at times having to make sure it's muted when not in use but I find it makes my left hand muting a lot more efficient. It's an ideal thumb rest too.
16. This bass has overtaken a Fodera Singlecut for the "ugliest bass award" for me.
17. I'd go for the Ibanez as well. None of the other two would really give usable sounds for my current band and I don't like how they look (and there's a fair chance I wouldn't like how they feel if my previous experience with Fender/Epiphone/Gibson is worth anything).
18.
You sound like the little red guy that sits on my left shoulder
Go on. You're only postponing the inevitable.
19. If only money wasn't tight!
20.
So the reality is punters who have to pay for BGM (including myself) to find out what is going on Basschat which is free...?
I'm sure they have other articles too.
21. 1+ on this being a great community. I've also been offered and sent some things out of the goodness of peoples hearts on here. A few of which are people I had probably never even said a word to on here! Meeting a few BC'ers recently at the Moffat Bass Bash was real nice too!
22. I found the MXR Compressor to be great depending on what bass I was using. With brighter sounding basses it kept the high end really well but since I got my thumb bass I found it dulled the sound a little. With all other basses I used I found it excellent though.
23. Without attempting to do seperate quotes in my tired state (see daily awesomeness thread). 1. The weight was actually uncomfortable even when seated to a certain degree. although I will say if I am ever in a position where I am doing a lot of studio work I will get one of those basses again. 2. I'll watching that video once I wake up but I so far haven't heard/played any bass with a precision pickup that I haven't disliked. I had a Warwick Thumb Dirty Blonde in the past that was excellent but sounded too much like a P my playing just doesn't seem to suit the tone. I understand why it's so popular and why it is used so often but just can never find myself enjoying one unless it's got flats fitted and tone rolled all the way off. even then, it wouldn't suit my current band!
24. There are certain things that would stop me from buying a bass. 1: weight. I had a bass that weighed over 6 kilos once. sounded fantastic but even at 20 years old my back and shoulder couldn't handle it. 2. Number of frets : I never feel totally 'at home' with a bass that had less than 24 frets. 3. If it was a p-bass. I just seem to naturally dislike the sound of a p-bass.
25. Even the new price of this is a bargain IMO!
