Beta Test & Review D’Addario NYXL Bass Strings
Cameronj279 replied to D'AddarioUK's topic in Accessories and Misc
I finally got round to putting these on the ACG today and used them at todays rehearsal. First impressions are very good. They definitely sound different to what I'm used to (Elixirs) but I like it! The tension feels considerably lighter as well but with no real loss of low end. It's the first set of Nickels I have used in about 3 years as well (I think it is at least). Depending on how long they stay sounding fresh for, I could see myself buying these in future. Will report back once I've given them some more use. -
There has only ever been one band to even come close to bringing a tear to my eye and it is Agent Fresco (who succeeded). I saw them play 2 sets at Tech-fest last year and both sets had me -and just about everybody else- blubbing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBskH2KkD-o

From the gigs I've been to there is usually one "crowd killer" but they usually get told their place pretty quickly
I treated myself to a '70s VM Jazz a few months ago & I've been delighted with it. I bought it because I wanted something cheapish I could have a go at modding & I've changed a few bits and pieces, but even as stock it was a great bass. The neck is one of the nicest I've ever played.
The one I tried is one of the only 3 Jazz basses I've played that I actually enjoyed playing. The other two being a Sadowsky and a Spector (so 9/10 times the price minimum)

Squier vm jazz basses are surprisingly good. I've played a good few expensive and vintage Fenders and all of them have been horrendous except the squier.

Fan frets Fancy "coffee table" woods 5 strings Multi coil pickups Versatile preamps

I think normal Thunderbirds look ridiculous but that one actually looks not bad. The body flows a lot better with the fan frets. I also think the headstock is fairly nice. Why would people want the massive t-bird headstock?
-
I'd rather that than sunburst though.

Used basses without original case/bag
Cameronj279 replied to bootleg's topic in Accessories and Misc
Whenever I've bought a bass that has came with a case I've always sold it on (usually with another bass right enough). I don't see a point in having a case lying around doing nothing when I'm always just going to take the Mono with me. -

Single cut (but only on 4 string basses) Painted bodies/necks less than 24 frets "relic" finishes rosewood fretboards rickenb*ckers anything vintage in appearance block inlays/binding red basses Anything sunburst overly pointy basses

I would be surprised if they didn't go up in price eventually. Everything seems to be raising in price and Maruszczyk basses seem to be becoming very popular.

I have an unhealthy hankering for a Maruszczyk Elwood L 5 string
Cameronj279 replied to Merton's topic in Bass Guitars
I also have a large desire for an Elwood L 5 stringer. although a longer scale and an active preamp. I feel your pain! -
I think they look horrendous...but I still want one.
The Dingwall Thunderbird. Headstock fail.
Can't say the headstock on actual thunderbirds looks great either to be honest.

I have a Dingwall NG-2 in yellow that I'm sadly needing to sell due to being owed a lot of money that I'm quite frankly not going to get. Bought new in September last year and in immaculate condition. I much preferred that to the original version of voodoo child.

If I'm at home I'll listen through my speakers (Acoustic Energy floorstanders) or if I'm out I'll listen through my earphones (Ultimate ears UE900). Or if I'm at my dads I'll listen through his ridiculously good hifi setup which is pretty much all custom made. Sounds incredible. It amazes me the amount of musicians who don't really seem to either listen to music or want to hear it on anything other than laptop speakers/crappy earphones.

I had a Warwick Streamer Jazzman 5 that fits perfectly into this category. I just couldn't get on with it (despite really liking Warwick basses). Bandmates even still talk about it as one of the nicest sounding basses I've owned but I just didn't like it. Annoying as when I hear someone else play them, I think they sound incredible.

Beta Test & Review D’Addario NYXL Bass Strings
Cameronj279 replied to D'AddarioUK's topic in Accessories and Misc
I missed out on these when this thread was originally started (limited 5 string sets) but received a pm out the blue last week saying they have a set with my name on. Just home after a few days recording. Will get them put on the ACG for the next rehearsal/gig Looking forward to trying them out. Some great feedback so far. -
Voted. Not for myself of course

I've used the TC and it works better than the other ones I've tried but still not anywhere near as good as its pedal equivalent. I also have a (free) app on my phone called DA Tuner which I find to be better than any clip on tuner I've ever used.
