1. Worst I've had was my first ever gig. I had been playing roughly 9 months at this point in time and we were doing a set of 4 original metal tunes. During the first song the drummers bass pedal stuck to the bass drum (luckily he used a double pedal and was good enough with that!). Come the second song I forget and start playing the wrong tune. Luckily nobody else had heard it before and it was in the same key so didn't sound too mental.
2. This was my reason for buying an MXR Compressor. I feel it does help but not entirely. Although it is a pain in the hole I agree with Ambient. Practice the part until dynamics are as close as can be. Although me being lazy (and not very good) does use the compressor.
3.
God no! 6 strings is my limit, but I keep settling back to 5 as a mainstay. I'd love a go on that 10, and I was extremely surprised at how compact it turned out too. One day I'll likely order a 6 string headless ACG as a super compact, easy to move around, record, gig, rehearse bass, but not for a little while yet. My current build is a 5 string 33" Krell SC with one of those awesome Uber ART tops, hoping to see it before Xmas Eude
ooo. Those tops look so much nicer in person! I look forward to the NBD thread!
4.
Anywhere between a few months to nearly 12on average I think, but don't quote me. A Graft bass is obviously quicker as a lot are built from stock bodies, but Uber Grafts, Custom and then Uber instruments would obviously take longer. If you manage to convince Alan to build you something insane like a headless 10 string fanned fret half fretted half fretless, it'll take as long as it takes Eude
is that 10 string monster thing yours? If so I saw it. looking good and mental in equal measures! I was quoted around a year for my custom build.
5.
That's what I like to hear I have a new one on order myself although technically Mrs ead may not be aware of this fact...
I don't know how you can manage that. I haven't shut up about mine and I only placed the order 2 weeks ago!
6. Looks lovely. like a modern jazz!
7. ONE OF US, ONE OF US!
8.
I've seen it and played it in real life, it's even better in the flesh
I played it too. I second this!
9.
IMHO the time you spend learning to play left handed would be better spent practicing right handed...
This. However I am a firm believer of the easy option is usually the best (read : lazy as sin)
10.
Holy Mother of God!! What did you order? Is there a pic of it?
Currently not much on here but it shall be updated as the year passes by Specs etc are all there http://basschat.co.uk/topic/237850-so-i-decided-to-take-the-plunge/
11. I went to his workshop a week or so ago. That certainly didn't help! Ended up leaving with an order placed and my bank balance whimpering slightly.
12. My name is Cameron and I have an addiction towards basses I can't afford and pedals I don't need. This started several years ago and has now spiralled out of control and similar to ChrisMuzz my girlfriend doesn't seem to mind my illness.
13. Looks great in that finish!
14. Always felt this was a problem but just too small a problem to be worth changing tuners.
15. That's...definitely something! Think I saw a very brief video with Andy Irvine playing this and it sounded pretty good. Definitely couldn't get past the shape though.
16. I've played a few of the Korean Spectors (assuming they Koreas like you (I'm just considering the cheaper ones)). They were good but I definetely prefer my Warwick Corvette (which I actually got cheaper than the Spectors! Edit : I will say if you are going for a fully bubinga bass (i.e Corvette) be prepared for the weight of it. I believe mine is just shy of 6kilos
17. Thought I put them in the original post (shall amend!). Going for 2 50mm humbuckers. If money were permitting it'd be the multi coils though!
18. To cut a long story short I very very briefly owned an ACG bass over the last fortnight and everything about it just felt and sounded perfect so I was considering getting a custom build done So made a trip to Moffat on Monday and played a few of the stock basses (including the ART Recurve which is quite simply perfect) and got an idea of his Filter preamps and different body shapes. Into the workshop and was barraged by masses of different woods. So the specs are now chosen and deposit is paid. Excitement has kicked in and the waiting now begins! Specs are : Recurve 5 34" Redwood Burl top, Black Limba body core, Purpleheart accent 5 Piece neck - Wenge/maple/purplehear/maple/Wenge Spalted Maple fretboard ACG DFM 4k preamp 2x Multi Coil 5 pickups Will be a while but I shall update this as the process goes along as I found other peoples build threads helpful/interesting For now, have this
19.
It's all fun and games until some hillbilly tells you that you've got a pretty mouth...
This is how I found out that I have "pretty lips" Was filled with both glee and worry.
20. I don't know anything about those basses (i.e fender in general) but I'd definitely want a hell of a lot more information if I was to spend that amount of money. A serial number at least.
21.
I think the named stuff is still doing OK, as are good quality sub £200 'starter basses' ( I hate that phrase) The problem seems to be with mid range quality basses that have bottomed out in value and are not seen as either an 'investment' or cheap enought to have a punt on. I recently advertised a bass at £295 (current model in production at over £750 new) with no interest whatsover. Thankfully I do not need to sell it and I won't be giving it away so it has gone under the bed.
I agree with this. Warwick stuff is especially bad for this (or good if you're wanting a warwick I suppose). New value of them is huge (to the point where it's a bit ridiculous IMO) but sell second hand for a fraction of that. I mean I got my corvette for less than £400!
22. I have to say. I played the Uber ART recurve today and am seriously seriously impressed by it. feel, looks and sound it was the quite probably the perfect bass (although missing a string for me).
23. So annoyed I missed this
24. Finger style bit at the start sounded good (but a bit too busy for the track IMO). Slap bit just seemed unnessecary to me and sounded very out of place. Saw a few of that guys videos and he tends to (to my ear) either be exceptional or playing really out of context and not listening to the actual track. He's still better than I am and probably will be.
25.
Woo! That GB Spitfire in white with mint pickguard is lush!!
not normally the style I go for but I agree, that is real pretty!
