Just curious as to who every bodies main 'idols' would be. For me it was Les Claypool and Ryan Martinie. Just after a while of listening I decided "I want to be able to do that" So yeah, who inspires you!?
You may have just entirely missed the point....

That's just unhelpful bollocks mate, sorry.
I do that a lot, I retract my comment.
Playing with Eastfield last year, one of my favourite punk bands - if I recall correctly they were watching us play, making it embarassing when I stepped off the stage to jump around a bit and pulled my lead out in the process. Took me about ten seconds before noticing
It wouldn't be punk without at least one major f*** up!

Had to stop at 1:50 mark because of my dislikeness (is that a word?) of Slash. I do fairly enjoy the tone whoever that bassist has though!

Bass Strings - How Long Do Yours Last ?
The BCers whose strings last a week - what are you doing, playing underwater? I use a 1.4mm guitar pick and for strings, whatever's cheap (EBs at the last change).
I think a lot of it comes down to preference. I prefer the sound of newer strings, feel the freshness gives it a nicer sounding tone (especially for slap), it really brings out the 'growl' in my bass. So once strings go a bit dull, for me I'd always want to get a new set (money doesn't allow this of course). Also, as far as I'm aware using a pick will keep them fresher sounding for longer but I've never used one so I can't really comment on that. -
Ah, now that's an easy one - turn the bass down and pretend, principally by rocking out on stage. Most punters will remain oblivious... and quite often the band, thus confirming how much they genuinely listen to the bass parts. I couldn't do it now, but in some bands...
Sadly I'm one of those 'unable to move on stage' types, I enjoy standing withing a 2 square foot box on the stage

The crippling realisation through my first gig when I realised I only knew how to play 2 out of 7 of the songs. This explains the puzzled/terrified facial expression in my picture! The sunglasses thing reminds of when I saw Protest the Hero. Someone in the crowd handed Arif (bassist) their sunglasses to wear on stage, he took them and wore them for maybe a minute then put them on top of his amp. Once the set was finished he went upto the amp, put the shades back on and walked off stage and all you could hear was one poor sod in the crowd say "I need them!"

Songs you wish you played live but have never done
+1 on all of them. I'm flabbergasted Mr Bungle would even come up in this topic, but earlier today I played Disco Volante and was thinking about trying to play some of that stuff when I grow up. best, bert
Not really known about Mr Bungle for all that long but they've really really impressed me over the last year. Decided a while ago to learn squeeze me macaroni (it even got me passed my college audition!), really fun song to play, now to find someone who can sing that fast... -
This was a friends band, last Friday. 2 man band, 2 guitars, harmonica occasional switching to drums. Went on stage and said "hi we are *insert name* and we hate all the songs we've written and we hope you do to" started playing and one guitar was out of tune (badly). Dropped the mic, played seriously out of time with each other as well. Feel kinda bad cause it was just one guys fault, other guy was fine. Worst I've done is play the wrong verse...never knew the setlist and sound engineer was a pillock so I couldn't hear any other instruments. Was an original song and I play bass so nobody noticed Edit: just remembered during the intro of the first song of my first gig, the drummers bass pedal got stuck in the drum skin, in a band that used a hell of a lot of double bass for texture in the songs it's just lucky he managed to patch it up after that song

it depends really, generally it's just if I'm in the house, I'll practice while I've got nothing else to do. I don't really set myself out a set time to practice each day. When I'm practicing I generally just go for learning more about chords or certain techniques (at the moment tapping (failing miserable might I add!!)) or even try and learn a cover of a song, generally try and learn one I feel is out my ability range, at the moment Sequoia Throne by Protest the Hero Theres generally a fair amount of times each day where I'm just standing up for one of my daily feeds or urinations where I'll just pick up the bass for maybe 10-15 mins before or after I complete my quest.
Oooh noooooo! Another one [s]aiming[/s] playing an Archer bass through a MarksMan amp! best, bert
In all fairness, I'm pretty terrible at bass. I just really felt they strings in particular died almost instantly of putting them on, they felt really harsh on the fingertips as well...just me? -
Songs you wish you played live but have never done

Posted earlier but wouldn't mind playing a few Primus, Tool or Mr Bungle tunes live! Don't know people with enough gear for Tool songs (I know I don't). And don't know people with the ability to play Primus or Mr Bungle tunes...gutted, they'd be fun to play to a crowd -
Mess around with new techniques or chords (if you haven't already). I've found learning guitar parts of songs to be pretty fun. Also annoys the guitarist a little when he has a soft guitar intro and then he realises it sounds fifteen times better on bass!

Bass Strings - How Long Do Yours Last ?

This is just from my experience trying different kinds of strings. From them being fresh to sounding pretty dull. Rotosound swing bass - 10 hours. By far the biggest waste of money I've ever done Fender Nickel round wounds - maybe 2 days Dr coated - maybe a month and a half D'darrio (the super bright ones) - so far a month and a half and they still sound decent Ernie ball slinkies (pink packet) - maybe a week I have a feeling that I must sweat some sort of metal eroding liquid -

I've always wanted to play Happy by Mudvayne live. The bassline in that song has always been the epitome of excellence in my opinion but the only band I've been in that was that style were all focusing on playing originals live rather than covers. One day! -
Chicken, or turkey..?
Bacon Cheeseburger if I recall correctly. Not going to lie, it did look really nice (pre-beating), I'd have been a bit miffed too -
What are you listening to right now?

Cameronj279 replied to krispn's topic in General Discussion
Don't know if this counts but we almost made our singer quit whilst he was plugging in his wireless mic for a soundcheck once. The reasoning for his tantrum? The drummer violently attacked his lunch/dinner with a drum stick, rendering his burger inedible. I found it funny at least -

This is hilarious, I'm one of the 'unable to move on stage types' -
Not really hilarious in any manner of the word but the first band I ever auditioned for (when I had been playing for 8 months). Being the first time I had even been in a studio or played on anything other than a 20watt practice amp. So after spending a good 2 hours traveling to this studio I got set up and spent ages trying to find out what 'drop C' meant. soon as the drummer and guitarist started playing -both of which were playing Dream theater- I instantly thought "sh*t. They're way too good. Got a call a week later saying they wanted me in the band and even played my first two gigs with them. Still have no idea why they picked me, looking back at it, I was terrible!

Do you consider yourself an "expert" bass player?
Cameronj279 replied to Jam's topic in General Discussion
In all honesty, I wouldn't ever consider myself 'good'. I'm always improving and haven't been playing for that long a time, but it's what I enjoy so I'll continue getting better
