1.
Did you have a Dirty Blonde then? Always wondered what they sounded like, fairly 'normal' then? Eude
It sounded like a really bright P bass from what I remember. It had probably the most sustain I've ever heard from a bass though and super clear tone.
2. Back when I had a compressor I always kept the octave pedal after the comp.
3.
Tonewood makes a helluva difference, not matter what anyone says. If that thumb weighed 8lb, was made of ash and had a maple neck, totally different sounding bass. However, at 11lb plus, Bubinga and wenge, it sound like that. Blooming beautiful.
It does. I say that as someone who has owned an 8lb thumb bass with an Ash body and Maple neck. It did have different pickup configuration which of course changes the tone considerably but even unplugged. The bubinga thumb bass sounded like a thumb bass. The other one just didn't. Great bass right enough...just not for me.
4. I wasn't aware it was a thing but from watching a few interviews with him I want to read it. I imagine it will be very good.
5. You lot are a sensitive bunch
6.
My Thumb GAS will never go away, but man alive I don't miss the awful balance and reach to 1st position. They're gorgeous basses and incredible sounding instruments, but they don't fit short arses like myself so well... Eude
I just found them a little heavy. I didn't have that much in the way of neck dive...but I do miss that bass.
7. I wouldn't say it's inappropriate provided the person who originally sold it asked the permission of the buyer if it's okay to give you their details. I personally wouldn't feel offended even if they hadn't asked me. To be totally honest, I probably wouldn't even give it a second thought if I were in the position of either seller or the buyer here.
8. It's actually made me have GAS for a thumb bass again...
9. Warwick for me as well. Warwick > Roscoe > Modulus > Spector
10. I had a good chat with everybody in Gojira when I was waiting outside for their show in Glasgow a few years back. I've spoke to so many people in large-ish metal bands and can't say I've met anybody who didn't seem like a real nice genuine guy/gal.
11. This thread makes me realise I have no decent pics of me at a gig. Must remedy that.
12.
Elixirs are less zingy than just about any string I've ever used. They're great strings if you like the sound of knackered old roundwounds as they sound like that straight out of the packet.
I find them not as zingy as brand new uncoated strings but they do sound fresh for a lot longer than any other ones I've used. I feel with all other strings I've used I want to replace them within 2 weeks (or instantly in the case of Rotosounds) but Elixirs last me a good 8/9 months or so
13. I can see why people don't like the zing of fresh strings but I hate when strings don't have that zing to them. As people have already said the little string noises will dissipate in a band setting but it doesn't hurt to get used to minimising it. Then you can decide if you want it or not. I like having it at times for making weird sounds with the envelope filter...
14. It really does depend on the song obviously but generally if I go for a tricky song it'll be about an hour or two. The last song I learned was Sequoia throne by Protest the Hero and I would say it took about 3 hours in total to learn (mostly spent on the tapping section) and about another hour or two to get reasonably decent sounding. I find the easiest way to learn songs is to just break it down as much as possible and then just connect all the sections.
15. The Classic was definitely my least favourite. I can't decide between the other two though.
16. All of these are really good so far
17.
I don't really have a set style of bass that I like.. I like classic designs as much as I like coffee table basses There are a few features that instantly put me off a bass though: Single cuts, gold hardware, tort pickguards or signature basses spring to mind. Although I have seen basses with gold hardware, or tort pickguards that I thought looked nice... the same is yet to happen with a single cut design though.
I'm quite weird in the sense that I don't much like the shape of a jazz bass, gold hardware or basses that are painted but I have a huge soft spot for a white Jazz with gold hardware.
18.
Hooray a leader emerges! No soundcard at work but I will check it out tonight I'm tempted to upload mine that I did yesterday, but I haven't listened back to it yet to make sure it's not sh*t so maybe I'd better do that first...
If it makes you feel better I'm gonna try and upload something on Friday. Weirdly I reckon I'll get a better sound using my ipad to record audio from an amp than I will directly into Reaper
19.
Well I was noodling around with this in mind last night and may have recorded a little something to submit. ... didn't want to go first though in case no-one else entered and I ended up looking like a ninny
I wonder how many other people are thinking the same...
20. I use a B3K with my NG-2 and it sounds excellent. I've also previously used it with a Warwick Thumb I used to own and sounded even better with that. All of these were ran through a Genz Benz shuttle 9.0.
21.
Yet again older people speaking for a generation they don't understand. I come into this category but I want to be promoted and make as much money as possible. I really do not want to have a dead end job earning nothing but 'being satisfied with life'.
I agree with this. I would fall into the younger part of that generation and although I do agree that it's important for mental well-being to enjoy (or at least not detest) your job, the fact that the article states that we aren't interested in a job for life and that it isn't a motivating factor is pretty dim-witted.
22.
I already own and or would buy basses featured in my list but I'm man enough to admit that those things are not 'cool'.
I think your list only had about 3 things on it that I didn't find cool. Anything with a signature on it, high up basses and single cuts. Saying that. One of my basses is a signature but I got it mainly as it sounds damn good and I do have my bass fairly high up but mainly since its just comfiest that way. Holding basses really low looks even more daft to me.
23. I agree with the comment about the drum dynamics and so do the other members after talking to them about it. As far as the tightness thing goes we are spending each rehearsal playing to a click as well as doing it at home too. The overdub is going to be very far in the background just for the one section. For the most part we are keeping it quite raw but not 'too raw'.
24. It's working now. I enjoyed it. Gave me something to listen to while I done the dishes there
