1. Looking forward to hearing this, when's the next Doghouse Doctors gig?
2. Plus 1 on the GK stuff. I have a MB Fusion and it's plenty loud, even with one 8ohm cab.
3. Fantastic film. Amazing that CBS were interested so early given the, let's face it, sub-par performance of the band. I know that's not what is important really, but still hard to believe they had such major level record company interest. Would it happen today for a similar band at a similar stage in their career/musical ability?
4. Drax's idea of doing some written transcriptions (from treble to bass clef, and visa versa) is a good one. I went from being a violinist (treble clef) to viola player (Alto clef) and all I can say is you get there eventually.
5. Not sure what album to recommend but I was lucky enough to see them live once many years ago at Saddlers' Wells. Excellent gig as I remember. I've always loved their versions of 'It's a Man's World'.
6. I know that Pere Ubu's tour of the US was fraught with difficulties last year because they couldn't get working visas for their UK members. There's info on their website.
7. I've bought cables from OMMB and they're excellent. I've also made my own recently using the same components that OBBM uses - Van Damme cable and Neutrik connectors. I've notice a significant variation in tone and volume between some of the cables I've made despite them having the same components and being roughly the same length. Guess my soldering must be at fault.
8.
It was the bass on Animals that made make start playing the instrument. Guess I owe him a nod of gratitude.
I learnt to play guitar by listening to and copying Animals - great album.
9. I've never noticed mine, but I never play amplified at home.
10. Years ago I got a very shirty response from a band who wanted me to play cello on a recording. Despite me telling them I didn't own a cello and had never played one, they seemed to take it as a personal slight.
11. Let me know if you want to compare it with one of my Compacts at one of your gigs or rehearsals.
12. My little blues/soul combo will be doing our thing at the Cricks in Keighley tomorrow night (14/11/2014) from 9pm ish. Pop along and say hello if you're in the vicinity. Martin
13.
I thought he recorded his parts in 'is ohm studio?
Watt?
14. Singer-songwriter James Taylor started his career as wardrobe assistant to the Godfather of Soul.
15.
I use a waterproof Mono case these days, but in such situations I've put glad wrap all along the middle where the case opens: dry and fine!
Do I detect an antipodean?
16. A lot of Rolling Stones stuff, like 'em or loathe 'em, have excellent rhythm guitar, and excellent counter play between the two guitarists. For Rock'n'Roll stuff, try "Baby Blue" by Gene Vincent, or lots of stuff by Buddy Holly. I like The Five Royales as well - Lowman Pauling was a real innovator on electric guitar.
17. Almost anything by the Velvet Underground. Try "Rock and Roll" or "What Goes On".
18. I heartily recommend Marks and Spencers' range of flat caps. Always on stock, and always stylish.
19. Its not light but someone is selling a GK 700 2x10 combo on here that is a lot of amp for the money and only a little bit above your budget.
20. It's a good book but as said above, quite depressing. Pretty much the complete antithesis of Alex James's book in its descriptions of life on the road. I've seen The Fall about 25 times since 1987, number 26 coming up at The Brudenell. Sadly though I never got to see Karl Burns play. Hanley remains my favourite Fall bass player by a mile.
21. I play two venues where the management passes round a bucket for contributions which we get on top of the comparatively small fee. It's never occurred to me to do it ourselves at other venues. Perhaps we should try it tonight at our Bikers Clubroom gig - last time they passed a bucket round for collections for one of their members who had just been sent down for a stretch at Her Majesty's pleasure, so they're familiar with the concept...
