1. It's been said on here before that some were MDF as well.
2.
you mean the rounded 'point' (where you are supposed to hold it) as opposed to the sharp point i presume?
No. I actually use this bit. Or is that what you meant? That's just how I picked it up over 30 years ago so I don't think I'm going to change now.
3.
Hercos are thicker where you hold them (about 1mm) and 0.50mm at the business end, which I like.
In the last couple of years I've gone back to picks after 20+ years using fingers. My favoured ones are Hercos (I do use others but always come back to the Hercos) and I alternate between the 0.5 & 0.75. But - I use the side of them to play with, not the point - always have. Am I alone in this? Never seen any mention of anyone else doing it.
4.
Happened to me with a Ric. Coveted a Ric, Bought a Ric, played the Ric, Ric stayed under bed for a year...sold the Ric.
+1 except make that 1 year under the bed 20 years. There's currently a Stingray occupying that position!
5. I've got both. The Stingray gets out of it's case every 6 months or so when I fancy a change - and I always wonder why I didn't bring one of the Precisions - or the Jazz. I've just never really taken to it.
6. Slade, Wizzard, Mud & Shaky!
7. 20 odd years ago I tried out a lighter set (Superwounds - remember those?) and broke two, the A & the E, in one gig! Went straight back to my usual gauges (45-105) and have never broken another since.
8.
Excellent detective work!
Rather sadly, it came from my memory. I've no idea where it was but I can recall somebody I knew with a roundback acoustic with that logo and that it was a Clarissa. Amazing how much music related irrelevance is in my head! If only I could divert that bit of memory to things I really need to know
9. Clarissa? Think they were Italian made which would tie in with what Jon said.
10. You should tune up using harmonics. When it makes that rippling sound it's in tune!!! Fortunately somebody else told me otherwise fairly quickly.
11. I don't think I'm particularly nostalgic towards Carlsbro. They were simply one of the only realistic choices alongside the likes of HH and gave you an amp loud enough to gig with for very little money. Trace Elliot in the 80s was out of my league (in fact new was out of my league ) - Peavey were what I aspired to then. I am sure a Peavey TNT at the time was about £300 or that might have been a Databass. My Carlsbro 150W head cost £125 including 115 & 412 cabs, The 12" vintage Celestion speakers are still gigging today in our guitarist's Marshall 412 so not that bad a deal!!
12.
Rickenbacker 4001 - poorly made, poorly finished, uncomfortable to play & just incredibly disappointing when it was my dream bass.
This
13.
they're big, heavy, have huge but comfortable necks.
Like proper Ibanez basses used to. Think Musician, Roadster etc
14.
Other than that, The Bluefields "Ramshackle" - OK, so it's hoary old-style rawk, but they put on the bestest rockingest show I've been to so far this year.
+1 I've got it on repeat in the car. When I first heard about them I wondered why they had a singer when Dan Baird was in the band (as bass player). After seeing Joe Blanton belt it out, I know!
15.
Well it should be 'Remember You're A Womble'.
I'll be playing that tomorrow night!! First one I learnt (whole song rather than just riffs) was for my first proper band - Chatterbox by the New York Dolls.
16. My bitsa has a MIA P neck dating from 2001-2002. It is 41mm wide at the nut. I don't know if that was the norm for that era but it is significantly slimmer than my 94 MIJ Precision.
17. My amps through the 80s were: WEM Dominator 50 Watt Guitar amp (!!) Carlsbro Cobra 90 Watt Combo Carlsbro Stingray 150 Watt head with 100 Watt Goodman cab Peavey Mk 6 (I think) 300 Watts with 115 & 210 The Stingray was incredibly loud for 150 Watts and it was so lightweight I had to tape it to the top of the cab.
18. Probably made about 1984.
19. I was in a band in 1990 (playing drums) and the bass player got a blue one so guess they were sold either at that time or earlier.
20. No. I change about every 3 months when I feel them getting dirty. Prefer the sound of new ones as well.
21. Precision looks better, sounds better and plays better for me (tho not too wide a neck). But... I find the Jazz body more comfortable so that's what I'm currently using.
22. Always think it's worth mentioning in these threads that one of the most commonly used carriers - Parcel Force - doesn't insure musical instruments.. Their 'enhanced compensation' which covers values above £100/£200 depending on service used EXCLUDES MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. They will take the money off you to insure it but the small print lists musical instruments as not covered so wouldn't expect much joy if you try and claim. Not sure if Royal Mail are the same or if they are totally separate now.
23.
I'm not joining in this debate . But that is great. Flying Saucer Attack would get my Rezillo's vote though.
William Mysterious was a great bass player. Unfortunately he died recently.
24. My favourite is Slack Babbath - no points for guessing who they are a tribute to!
25.
The same guys trying to flog off the 'Fender' on one of the music gear selling groups on facebook...
I put a comment on stating a few facts. It's now gone.
