1. I'm going to be in Lincoln on a Saturday in 2 or 3 weeks. Previously we have always popped into the Olde Crown and there's always been bands on. Had a look online to check it out and it appears it's closed for refurbishment and due to reopen the week before we are there. Anyone know if they will still be putting bands on? If not are there any other bars around the centre where you can get some live music on a Saturday night?? Can't seem to find much listed online.

And here's a favourite of mine - fine bass playing too...
+1 for Corduroy. I never realised how good Richard Searle was during his Dr & the Medics days.
3. Read the insurance small print as a lot of the couriers will take your money for insurance but exclude musical instruments. You can get around it by removing the bass necks - not sure about the double bass though!!
4.
Quo started doing this a lot a few years back as they have a huge back catalog. It does start getting a bit 'clubland' though if you're not careful. As mentioned it works better if you stick to medleys by the same band and preferably bands with plenty of hits like the Beatles. Maybe you could work up a medley of the existing classic Estonian tunes to free up more time for new stuff?
I saw them do this and hated it - never been to see them since. I think one or two medleys in a set is ok but imo you can overdo it.
5. In jethro tull days he always seemed to use a 5 string ibanez soundgear through randall amps.
6. I had a yamaha bb500 as well. Went fine until one gig when it started repeatedly scrolling through all the presets. Interesting when it passed through distortion and fuzz!! Had to go back to yamaha to be repaired, fortunately under warranty. Since sold it on and the lad who bought it has had no problems since. I've gone back to valve/ss hybrid but had ongoing issues with the valve part. It is locally repairable though. Still tempted to try class d again - tc electronic maybe???
7. I've acquired an early 80's Tokai neck - one piece maple - which has been badly defretted. There's a bit of lacquer damage on the fretboard but I could live with that. Most of the wood filler has been taken out of the slots. Has anyone ever done this or had it done? Trying to decide whether it's worth the effort. Also, it has some lacquer cracks up and down the skunk stripe. The cracks look pretty old so not sure if there is still any issue with it. What would you do if it was yours?
8.
Use four fingers. The motion I use is: Index, Middle, Ring, Pinky, Ring, Middle> Start over. Its kind of like rolling a coin along your fingers which is a warm up/practice routine i use sometimes. Youtube some of John Myung's stamina techniques too. Theres some good stuff in there.
Never tried that one. Going to give it a go!
9. It will come with time. It's taken me getting on 20 years but I can now play with either all four fingers or thumb and three fingers. I usually practice slowed down until I'm playing it right then build the speed gradually.
10. This guy does guitars - there are a few examples in his gallery. kev bambra
11. Can't do best intros without a bit of Stephen Amazing. Not the best sound but you can hear it OK. UPP - Dance Your Troubles Away Another one I like is this Gong - Heavy Tune
12. Ibanez Blazer replaced fairly quickly by a Roadster which I still have.
13. Welcome! Had a listen to your songs - I love Dee & Kelley. Sounds somewhere between early Sir Elton and Hue & Cry with a few other things mixed in. Still had the chorus running through my head when I was walking the dogs. Good one!
14. If you look on the back of a packet of D'Addario strings they give you the tension of each string. eg on a EXL170-5SL set for 36" scale G 48.5lbs D 55.7lbs A 46.5lbs E 40.5lbs B 39.0lbs I'm no expert but looking at that I would guess that swapping a G for a B means less tension on the neck.
15. Just weighed my 1981 Roadster - it's 9lbs so they obviously vary. It's always felt much lighter than my 1979 Musician which is 10.5 lbs. Never weighed them until today though.
16.
Yep, another +1 from me on The Chain. That and 'Another One Bites The Dust'... can't say I was ever really a fan of Fleetwood Mac or Queen, but those two basslines are so iconic they just seemed like a natural place to start at the time.
Those were actually the first two songs I played the first time I ever picked up a bass. The first full song I learnt was Chatterbox by the New York Dolls.
17. I'd rather play music I like with people I like for nothing. Only caveat would be that they have to be good enough musicians. Too long spent in the past with good friends who just couldn't cut it.
18. To be honest I have never thought it was a US one and I certainly won't risk losing my 100% feedback over it!! Mine won't fetch that anyway - it's a restoration job that I haven't got round to and probably won't. Too much effort for a low end instrument that I doubt I would play when finished. Still interesting to know a bit about it's background though.
19. It sold for £375 Time I listed mine I think!!
20.
"There was...a companion bass, a poor man's Rivoli.
I think that's being a bit generous it's err...not the best of basses to play. Maybe the Japanese didn't want to admit to making it! Shame cos I quite like the look of them and it cost me nothing. I certainly wouldn't be happy paying in excess of £250 for one.
21. There's an early 70's Epiphone 5120 for sale that states that it was made in USA. I thought these were all Japanese made. Any thoughts?? My interest is that I own one. I've always taken it as Japanese despite the "Made in Kalamazoo" sticker inside. After googling it there is someone says that if it doesn't say Made in Japan on the neck plate it's MIA but I have my doubts. I still think it's Japanese!
22. Maybe not the original point of the thread but Doddy - you have actually had an effect on me here! I started reading your responses thinking I can play perfectly well without reading. But - last night - I was gigging and we were well out of practice (not my fault - I'm available) and kept thinking that if I knew WHAT I was doing rather than trying to remember shapes it would be so much easier. I play entire bass patterns without having any awareness of a single note in them. I could tell you every note but I play by shape memory. Your comment about stock licks and patterns sums me up. Time for change methinks
23. I agree. Who but you is ever going to notice the tonal difference? I used to religiously stick to the thicker strings (25 years ago) but over time find I now go with whichever fingering involves the least movement. I hate jumping around the neck when not necessary and I use open strings whenever they can help with this. A lot of the time I don't watch my left hand so it helps to stay in 1st or 2nd position using open strings rather than sliding up the neck.
24. Usually would work but in this case looks like everything was pulled down and changed to a last page with final sale prices on which ran until yesterday. All cached images on the other pages are gone. Somebody with an interest in these basses should contact the guy - his details are on the cached page - and get the rest of the stuff before it's gets binned.
25. If you do a search on Google for westone.info then click on 'cached' it shows you the page from yesterday. Apparently all spares left unsold are going to be scrapped - seems a bit of a shame when there must be people who could use them.
