1. Ok, i'm not able to get there, I'm finding out if we can use it at our gig on the 10th.... because apparently it is a fundraiser for a charity theatre group they might not be particularly happy if I turn up asking for money for something else.....

  2. Also, if i'm paying £10/month, I have my phone playing music on spotify almost continuously whilst I am at work , and at home. So I probably listen to about 80+ hours on spotify a week. Lets say I listen to a track every 4 minutes, that is 15 tracks an hour, 1200 a week, or 4800 a month. That works out at each track play being worth 0.0021p/play .... you can see why they do not pay much per play!

Rhapsody royalty rate = .0091 cents per play

Rdio royalty rate = .0045 cents per play

Spotify royalty rate = .0009 to ZERO ( YES ZERO!!! ) cents per play!

I rest my case folks. The regular airwave radio stations pay roughly 10 cents a play... these internet radio stations need to pay Artists an actual royalty rate that reflects RESPECT for the music, Artists and Musicians who make the music in the first place.

A regular airwave station plays that 1 play to , what, lets say up to a million people . (1,000,000) on some of the bigger stations easily.
    If you have 1,000,000 plays on rdio - that is 0.0045 c * 1000000 = 45000 c or 450 dollar
even spotify at 0.0009c per play works out at 900c or 9 dollars ....

So essentially, you need about 10,000 spotify plays to match one million people listening to a radio station

As a cover band, it probably wouldn't work particularly well.

Busy cover bands are all about playing what an audience wants and going down a specialised route isn't going to have mass appeal.

In general I agree. It is about a) who is paying B) what influences them. At the moment, we're seeing a lot of demand for things like 80s because a) parents grew up with it B) the people getting married etc love the songs because they grew up with them and its "cheese". I can see that happening for 90s (like the stuff above) in maybe 5 more years.

Still would be fun to do, but I can't see it being easy to get gigs.

  5. So, having been fired from my band last night.... (and I dont really know why, but offtopic) I was considering pursueing something i've long though about doin:

An old school/garage/trance type covers band.

My question is, would there actually be any demand for such a band? I'm thinking stuff like

    ATB
    N-Trance
    Robert Miles
    Christina Aguilera
    Fatboy Slim
    Jennifer Lopez
    Justin Timberlake
    Liberty X
Maybe throw in some busted / type stuff

    etc etc

Its all stuff that me and my friends <loved> and still do, but I cannot see it being particularly commercially acceptable / likely to get gigs. Anyone else done any of this sort of stuff / seen it succeed anywhere?

I would imagine it would take a lot of practise/patch setting up - probably 2 keys players + guitar.

  7. There are two that I really like (not to say the others are bad, but just dont appeal to me, maybe my tastes are too westernised) but one of those I feel is less towards the inspiration
I chose Ambient , my other favourite was TheBoy, but felt that the picture didn't symbolise hope

  8. So the futurlearn site went live (yesterday) This is basically a site doing some free university modules (no qualifications) online.

Of interest to me was this one:

Don't see the problem here? Bass players aren't allowed to jam together? If you don't like jazz bass guitarists then fair enough, but I quite enjoyed most of this (apart from billy Sheehan if course, who keeps inviting him to jazz gigs?!)

    I really liked that...thanks for posting..ironically!

I thought it was quite good actually. Yeas, hugely self indulgent, but I liked see the different styles, some immense talents there, ace drumming. And I enjoyed seeing Billy close up.

Come on folks, we are bassists, so let us appreciate it.

thank god i wasn't the only one then!

    Bad technique.

Place your fingers where they need to be and don't slide.

Lift your LH fingers a little more when you're moving to the next note.
Practise lifting your fingers up and down, and moving fingers along the strings "just" touching. Used to have the exact same problem!
You can negate a lot with EQ but it doesn't cover up the problem 100%

We are waiting for the next participant to raise their hand. It could be making its way towards Cornwall, who knows? :D

I've got no bass playing gigs until October, only got gigs on sound until then. :(

OK the 'Marvel' style locks will work - the screw which holds the plate against the strap will hold it securely. It'll go wide enough to hold twice the thickness of my 'Comfort Strapp'

    Hope that helps

    Cheers
