1.
Sorry? Are you kidding!
Well it just feels a bit CLANG sometimes but I know that lots of you guys would be interested. I feel blessed to have those experiences.
2. Had a nice day at Abbey Rd, I was along to meet a guy working there as my mate (Andy Treacey) was doing a drum session for him... I will be doing some things with him hopefully too. Elliott Randall came down to play a bit of gtr, and I even bumped into Paul McCartney in the corridor... Sorry for the name drop but it's been a bit of a day
3. I wish I could help Don, I have an underwood on my regular gigging bass but it's in a van in Manchester and I won't see the guys before the 4th (I'm saying this cos I'm not far from Reading) I have a realist on my jazz bass but it's fitted so I can't really take that off. Hopefully someone with a spare will come along.
4. Hi Gary, welcome to the forum... A few things that might help you with the sale. It's a great community here so we all want to say hello, there is an introductions thread in 'the local' section of the forum. We all love to drool over basses so pictures will definitely raise more interest, and if it sounds as good as you say, then sound clips may well have a prospective buyer speeding to your door, and to give an idea of location will give people an idea of whether it's worth taking an enquiry further. I also have a lovely German 1880 as well as a 1900 flatback so I know they can be lovely things. I am aware that Geoff Gascoyne, a recently joined member here, is looking for a new bass so it might be worth making him aware of your bass Good luck with the sale Jake
5. I went to Taiwan for a one off gig longest drive between gigs was 1450km from Dresden to Droylsden
6.
Cool! We love San Francisco. Jake - your post cracked me up. I know it was all in English, but after a certain point my eyes glazed over like I was reading Greek. I hear Wales has awesome castles, so we're looking forward to that. I had fish and chips in Edinburgh for the first time 15 years ago, fulfilling a boyhood dream - no really. I hope the shop is still there.
I am in fact Welsh and admit to the trait of, the moment i find myself atop a little rise in the land, I experience an irresistible urge to build a castle!!
7. Brighton, London (Ronnies or the Pizza), Stonehenge, Salisbury or Winchester Cathedrals, Bath, Cardiff, Pembrokeshire coast, up through Wales road trip to Liverpool (Parr Jazz) via Snowdonia, Manchester (Band on the wall), The Yorkshire Dales, Ribblehead Viaduct, the M6 through the lakes, over the border into Scotland up the A82 past Loch Lomond to Glencoe, Loch Ness then back down through Edinburgh (the Tron? if still going), to the North east of England, Lindisfarne down to Lincoln Cathedral, and all the way down the Great North road (A1) to Cambridge and then then back into London. I will meet you in Cafe des Amis in covent Garden (just round the corner from the Opera house) and you can tell me how your trip was.... Fly back to Philly... In all seriousness because of being a traveling musician I know this country intimately, so if you want any tips on locations and traveling times between them I will be able to give you a few pointers
8. I used a layer of DPC membrane as a complete internal surround attached to the studs, after the rockwool went in just before the plasterboard went on, it creates an airtight effect and is very very effective. It was on the advice of a surveyor who lives round the corner, his son plays drums, his view is that if you prevent air movement you prevent sound leakage. I have to say I agree and feel like he saved me a fortune (the membrane was 25 quid) . My son plays drums and when he's going at it it's barely audible in the house, bear in mind that the garage is 1 metre from the house. There is a little leakage outside but certainly not enough that the neighbours can hear it. Compare and contrast with his tutor who soundproofed a shed with foam and thick absorbent rubber, that cost about 2k!!
9.
I'd have lured him to a deserted warehouse and shot him in the face.
You're a pussy! I'd have eaten his liver while he watched
10. It makes my blood boil. A poor lot. You have a PM coming
11.
Thanks, looks like I'll have to take it and see what they estimate then, the scroll crack I thought had been repaired but on closer inspection sadly I think not but there is virtually no movement in it currently at least, still another thing to repair though! Any suggestions on value of this once repaired? So I know if it's even worth undertaking when I get a quote.
I couldn't say from the pics but I would imagine any decent luthier should be able to give you an idea of the value. If you got it cheap or free and it cost a few hundred to repair/set up then you have done ok in my view assuming it sounds ok. I have played a couple of chzech basses and some of them sound great.
12. looks like the entire neck is coming away from the body to me, so might need to be taken apart and re glued... I hate to scare you but the last time my bass was opened (back table off) to repair a shrink crack, which was luckily an insurance job, it cost £550 (that was in the 90's) I don't think a neck re set would cost you that but it's a lot of hours to take it apart re glue the neck put it back together...
13.
My personal favourite Yellowjackets/Haslip piece - Spirit of the West
Bob Mintzer plays lovely on that
14.
I have met Jimmy Haslip a couple of times, a real gent. Fantastic player. Some great stuff on the first album 'The Yellow Jackets' Garry
YOWZER to that groove, it's Ricky Lawson with Jimmy there I believe... taking me back there Garry. I had a brief chat with Jimmy after a YJ gig once... dude. Will Kennedy on kit on that gig he was jaw droppingly good, and Bob Mintzer chatted to us for ages, and has since played on a mate of mines album (Elliott Henshaw)
15. Looks like the nubiles worked Kiwi, as I'm sending this very message from the BIG screen.... Yay, bright eyes and bushy tail restored.... I did.... tell you all ..... about my ...umm tail right
16. Withdrawal sets in, sallow sunken eyes stare out from a hunched frail frame, sucking the vestigial BC experience through the tiny iPhone portal...like electronic methadone to the junkies monkey...! sh*t man I really need to get out more
17. 'sbizarre I can get to the front page but if I click on a topic it just does not do owt
18. Hmmm it's literally just BC as far as I can tell, all my other haunts are loading up fine
19. I'm having big problems with the site today, I'm sure it's virgin as its fine on my phone via 3G and my BB was down all last night, anyone else?!?
20. My advice would be try to learn the song rather than the sequence (which alone is dry), try to get to the point where note choice is instinctive because you know what will work with the song, that way you are more open to hearing where to go in solos... if you get lost... who cares! get the sellotape out, work together...
21.
Fantastic stuff Jake. You get the sense when you watch/hear Jimmy play that he really knows his way around his bass, from his low B right up the neck. Fantastically melodic and incredibly supportive all at the same time.
He's a very humble guy, I have talked to him about his concept in playing to support those songs and he always just pays tribute to the writing and how easy it is to play those songs and how lucky he feels to be able to play them. I've seen him with James 3 times now and each occasion was a masterclass in doing it right... every night. I've also seen him twice with Allan Holdsworth where he showed he can tear it up with the best of them. If you consider the drummers he has played with. Gadd, Vinnie, Steve Jordan, Calos Vega, Chad Wackerman to name a few....
22.
I'd love to meet James Taylor, he's a hero of mine. And his band are incredible! I saw him a few years back and Jimmy Johnson was on bass duties before he had Lee Sklar back... what an incredible bass player!
I feel very privileged to have met him, and it was through Jimmy that I did. He (Jimmy) is a pal of mine and has invited me to gigs with James and Allan Holdsworth. I have always loved Jimmy's playing and similarly feel very lucky to have him as a friend. Lee was playing for the Carole King/JT troubadour tour, Jimmy has been JTs regular bass player since the early nineties.
23. James is very sincere. One of the greatest songwriters of recent times in my view... and a band to die for! (I met him in July last year... he's lovely)
