1.
I think it's about time I chimed in on this. I applied for an audition after having seen the add on a different website, and ended up getting the position! I'm now the new Skinny machines bass player and have my first gig tomorrow! It's in Shoreditch at the 93 Fleet East. If anyone fancys coming down/up to it there more than welcome! It's going to be an exciting year for considering iv come straight out of uni, playing with a lot of 'bedroom bands' and people who are not really interested in touring as such, and finally in a band that actually is going to be touring for the majority of the year! Iv got a LOT of songs to learn in such a short amount of time, but I can see it being more than worth it! Plus, despite whats been said on this topic they are really great bunch of guys and it's going to be an absolute pleasure working with them.
I'm so pleased a basschatter got this gig, because a success story is a success story despite some of the rather silly comments that have been made in this thread. I'm a working pro bass player and I really understand the need to network in a tough business so I find it rather ridiculous that some people can do nothing but sit at home and criticise someone else's efforts. Good Luck Mike and Good luck Skinny Machines I really hope you have success and even if you don't hit it big, I hope you have great fun trying. Jake
 2.
I feel it necessary to mention that my L-1000 was built in 1980 because it was one of the first G&L basses ever built and therefore it proves beyond doubt that I have the largest swinging dick out of all the G&L fanboys.
I like this logic. My double bass was made in 1880 so making a rough calculation based upon the time/size equation I would say it would be like this... "Hi Pygmy Shrew, I'm Horse"
 3. I have a friend that writes with Graham, I've met him myself a few times, if anyone is seriously looking at this I can check out the veracity.
 4. Doddy is right in his analysis but I read the question slightly differently. As I understood it, the question was checking whether it's ok not to look.
 5. Put simply ears are better than eyes at telling you when you're in tune. On that basis I use them in proportion.
 6.
Interesting to see that 78 people have opened the first excerpt (Straight No Chaser) and then the number of listeners goes down as the list progresses. Are you guys trying to tell me something
I listened to em all
 7. I guess I've been mostly fortunate with sound engineers. The good ones will come and listen to your sound and then replicate. If they don't then you need to apply a bit of pressure.
 8. I love in ears for all monitoring, for me the quieter onstage the better, it becomes particularly useful when playing with a large ensemble. I did a gig in Germany with 6 piece rock band and 45 piece orchestra, there was an amp but I didn't need it at all.
 9.
Cant see me making it either, which is a shame, I'd love to see that band, although apparently the bassist is a cheeky bu**er I've heard Have a great gig Jake!
And he can't play for sh*t
 10.
The one bloody day that week I can't make. Don't suppose you would mind rescheduling for the Wednesday would you? Excellent!
Never mind Nige the Album will be out later in the year so the whole of basschat is invited to the launch
 11.
This works Jake, And its free. [for playback anyway] http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows...er/wmcomponents Good one Bilbo. Garry
Cheers Garry, It worked. So thanks for the PM Bilbo but heard it now.... nice work! Jake
 12. I'd love to have a listen to these alas wma files are of no use to me... Any chance of converting a couple to MP3 mate Jake
 13. Reminds me of my first bass which was a Kay.
 14.
Im speaking as a non pro who plays with non pros I get the impression this thread is about helping someone like me, who plays alot, but doesn't read, if that is not the case please tell me and I'll stop posting and leave it to the pros
I think advice from all experiences is going to be useful to the OP so stick around... oh and plenty of pros lose the form in a tune like so what... it usually depends on how good the soloist is at pointing out the form with their improvisation.
 15. As it says in the title fellas, superb songwriter, with this very tasty band, can be seen this coming Thursday 27th Jan at the Elgin in Notting Hill details to be found here Would be nice to see a few basschatters out.
 16.
My most hated phrase. Yes it's bass, but I want it to be interesting. I'm not going to go mental, but being allowed to play more than just root notes on the beat is a definite must. Why do most non-bassists insist that this must be the case?
You're probably not going to like my answer but keep it simple is mostly for the sake of the song. And lots of great bass playing is simple, if not then it needs to be beautifully done. To my ears many a good gig can be spoiled by a musicians notion that they have to keep things 'interesting' interesting for whom? and what does 'interesting mean? In my experience amongst average musicians (and I say musician because it is just not restricted to bass players) 'interesting means playing too many notes often based on little learning and seldom in a tidy time frame, the result being messy music. I'm not saying that's always the case but it's certainly something I've experienced from many musicians at various times. If you want something interesting to consider whilst playing then look up with both ears and eyes, concentrate less on keeping the bassline 'interesting' (in quotation marks because interesting is subjective) and concentrate more on the whole sound of the band.... Listen....! Interesting can be one note per bar if it's appropriate, and lots of notes per bar can be awful, and anything in between.
 17.
The Dave Grusin take on it is just fantastic, some stunning arranging. Enjoy. Garry
DG is an arranging giant
 18.
As long as they get there in time for the dress rehearsal it'll be fine
Which is kind of what I thought, but declined to say... It's quite a challenging score I think (never done it) so I would def buy a cd and at least get an idea of what's coming your way.
 19. Thanks Dave and Bilbo, This is quite an old ad so since posting I've taught quite a few BCers, their comments, in a thread kindly started by Molan can be found here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=97672 I have quite a few students at the mo but can always squeeze people in especially for one off lessons.
 20.
Guys and gals, this is your section..... ( I aspire to be joining your ranks soon!) So my question is this - Would you prefer a sub forum in here for buying and selling your wares or a separate one in the for sale section? Bob,
I think it would be a good idea, seeing as everyone in here who puts up a for sale ad then goes on to provide a link to said thread in here when it's DB gear, cut out the middle thread/man innit.
 21. My take is... be able to play the original exactly in a 'to die for' way. And also be able to add the odd thing to enhance. If you're not enhancing some of history's great bass playing moments (and lets face it thats at least possible) then KISS (keep it simple stupid)
 22. Quick addendum. In tough times I would encourage skill swapping as much as possible and I therefore would be more than happy to offer lessons to people who had something I needed in return.
 23. I would posit that most musicians of a sufficient standard to have anything real to offer on a sustainable basis (I mean that in a long term sense, we can all pass on bits and bobs) are going to be leaning towards the pro end of the pool. This means that unless they have a really good gig that they are not particularly well paid in relative terms. Despite being at least as socialist as you Rob, I have to feed my kids and therefore have to charge a figure that will mean that that is a realistic proposition. As it goes I have kept my prices at 25 an hour despite people of similar standing to myself charging up to 40/50 quid partly because teaching is not my main income, so despite having quite a lot of enquiries from basschatters teaching as a weekly scenario is not something I particularly encourage. I get hugely positive feedback from the people I teach (even though that mystifies me slightly) but still I regard myself as a player rather than teacher, even though I enjoy lighting peoples' musical fires immensely. As for a community based music project and free lessons etc.... great idea.... but the teachers should be valued as professionals, in this market economy the only way to ensure that is that they are paid as professionals. Lets not undervalue music and it's social importance from within our ranks so the only answer is for the society to recognise the same value and reserve some tax pounds for music education.... it's the only way, else it's only the wealthy that will get their hands on the quality tuition.
