1.
so what your saying is that artists should go back to making money from grafting rather than a few months in the studio and then sitting back and watching the coinage roll in
fantastically naive view
 2.
Intersting math there. I've never seen anything with even close to a billion downloads,
was merely pointing out the possible I agree with some of your other points, but to be run as a business in which people (artists) make a living requires investment, if you don't like the machinations of those companies do something else, but do realise that those companies are NOT investing in the business much anymore. Illegal downloading is why. It's possible that a decent industry could rise from the ashes and I will watch with interest, one thing is for sure though, many thousands of very talented musicians will walk away because it looks like an avenue riven with difficulty. BTW it mathS Math is American
 3. Every Alembic I've played I have liked. I love my own MK.
 4.
I don't illegally download and get most of what I need from iTunes. I obviously need to check out Spotify, but this whole downloading debate does make me laugh. When we were kids one friend bought an album and the rest of you copied it on to cassette (for the young ones, google cassette ). Nobody seemed to mind back then, and just like today, the materials to make 'illegal' copies were freely and openly available.
I think the glaring point in your argument that falls down is that you don't seem to have considered the maths. If 1 friend bought and 5 copied that means for roughly every 5-10 kids there was a sale in your example. These days the technology allows for 1 purchase and billions of copies within hours. Don't kid yourself, the industry is being crippled by theft. The equivalent at Tesco would be sell one chicken, have 5 million stolen.
 5.
just busking it. :-)
good... nice RH groove going on there...
 6. are you busking it or approximating? That isn't the line... not being critical or anything just trying to be helpful.
 7.
Yeh, well if you drove that T-34 then it wasn't much of a challenge.
Wouldn't you just love to turn up to a gig in St James' Palace or some such finery in one of those
 8. As I type I'm sitting outside the naval and military club, st james' square. Weather nil Jake 1, let's hope the second half (journey home) is as easy for team jakesbass...
 9. I missed a gig in Jersey in the last lot, (getting a cancellation fee though bless them) So I'm determined not to miss tonight's gig on Pall Mall, so determined that I've been sweeping snow off the road (hill on a corner) since 9 this morning, the snow has now stopped and I can definitely get the car moving, just hope the M3 is open.
 10.
I'm just a bit surprised that elsewhere on the forum there is so much support for our fellow bass players, yet ads like these seem to get a bit of friction. Did I miss something? I think that the more support and useful responses we can put on these posts, then the greater likelihood that we will continue to get pro' acts looking for bass players. As a pro myself, if adverts are dropped on my doorstep instead of having to go look for them then it's a good thing no? So let's all be a bit more constructive eh? Bass players might get a bad name otherwise!
+1
 11. If I knew that it wouldn't be too traumatic for my colleagues I would happily die onstage
 12.
I'd not seen that site before. That's really cool.
Good innit
 13. Try this, I like it... http://www.practicesightreading.com/index.php
 14.
Nah, Sorry - Thats the duty of a crusing Bassist, its all down to the booze. The person[s] to get the award would be the band member[s] staying on stage and not throwing up during the Bass solo. Garry
how dare you Garry, the beer at 8p a pint was too costly to drink more than a gallon a night
 15. I once vomited in the toilet at the side of the stage during a big solo piano feature, and got back onstage to finish the set with the taste making me feel even worse... it was on an extremely rough crossing of the bay of biscay and the theatre lounge being in the bows of the ship was going up and down like a good un, 40-60 feet rise and fall whilst holding a double bass and trying to put on a show under the hot lights etc all conspired to give me my one and only bout of sea sickness. Blegh I definitely deserve some sort of recognition for that little episode.
 16. Many thanks for the feedback Andy, also thanks for your comment regarding my main profile on here seeming to revolve around double bass. So everybody... I am just as experienced as an electric teacher! Cheers Jake
 17.
Does that mean the artist is still free to pursue other musical projects?
It means you are 'retained' for their first call. You are unable to put other projects in front of a retained gig but you are at liberty to do them if they fit the schedule.
 18. The link directs me to pet insurance.
 19.
The GearSlut in me had a bit of a funny turn at that desk, mate - steady!
It's a very lovely Neve, with hand made pre amps for each input channel. Very very special. And luxury of luxuries we will be mixing in there too.
 20.
It's showboating yep thats why there there..its not supposed to be overwhelming music..
That wasn't a criticism. I agree it is why they were there. In the context of the rest of my post it explains why it doesn't do it for me... it's personal.
 21.
a quick one ... my daughter once worked at Air Studios (work experience after uni) - she shadowed the great man himself - yep Sir George Martin. I picked her up from there a few times and met him - nice chap, showed me around. I told him I loved his work with the Beatles - 'who?' he replied (I'm pretty sure he was joking)
Lovely story, was that in the days when it was in town? It moved from central London to Lyndhurst hall in Hampstead... Have alook at their website it's a mighty impressive facility Air Studios
 22. It's showboating and I guess that makes for fun at a gig, but despite liking all three players it just doesn't groove me...
 23. One really nice aspect of this project is that we have recorded it a lot over the years and the basic ingredients are Gtr/Vox/Bass, so we have lots of acoustic versions already in the can which can act as bonus releases and b sides. That's how it all started at AIR just me (on double bass) the singer and the guitarist, doing a little side project with the engineer which grew into full band (9 piece sometimes) and a full on major recording project.
 24.
Colour me impressed, that's awesome! What are you working on there? Would love to just be a fly on the wall in a place like that, it's a different world to my usual recording environments!
I'm working on an Album project that is ongoing, we have 9 tracks all recorded from a total of about 16 then as we mix and craft the album we'll decide on the best tracks and takes. I am the MD of the project and I have a hand in producing it too. I make the charts and work on the arrangements with the Artist. It's a total joy to work there, with virtually every track, I have made complete takes with the bass tracks, very little overdubbing or repair, the reason being that I feel very comfortable there (been there quite a bit now) so I seem to play the parts just as they should be, which is helped by the fantastic atmosphere of the place. The girl in the pic (Olga Fitzroy) is engineer/producing she is a major part of the team and is also a joy to work with. I did post some pics earlier in the year of us in there, we'll be in again soon so I'll keep this thread updated. We have also recorded some of the vocals at Strongroom which is AIR owned too.
