2.
When I started out I used to put the URB on the roof rack - blimey!
I once had to put the bass on the roof in Bombay as the taxi was too small, we got stopped and fined for an unsafe load, came to about £1.50. What was funny though was that the policeman that stopped us was on foot and he just blew a whistle, the taxi driver stopped! In a city of 100 million I think he'd have had quite a good chance of getting away with it.
 3.
Unless he built them himself, not likely. To take from his example: ABM 115 37Hz - 2kHz 98dB 1W@1m ABM 210T 75Hz - 20kHz 102dB 1W @ 1m
I may be mistaken as I'm not well informed in this arena but I don't think his 'example' is his 'cabs' (I might have missed something) But anyway your post does clarify the idea of frequency routing and overlap where cabs are delivering the same range. Very useful to me thanks for that.
 4.
I have been playing bass for years, i have never used compression. What does it do? P.S I know I'm a dumbass.
Not knowing something doesn't (IMO) make you a dumbass. How else would you find out other than asking? There's tons I don't know and I'm an old fart. You're in the right place anyhow as someone here will explain very well.
 5.
Well of course everyone should buy with their ears but I doubt if many users of mis-matched cabs have tried matched cabs and there I guess is the rub. What I have done is found a cab I liked and bought two of them. I think chopthebass has got 3 Aguillar DB112's.
Sorry if I missed this elsewhere, but what cabs do you have? are they matched? and what about them do you like in particular?
 6. I don't really understand the technicalities but I am intrested in cutting through the 'I think this is better than...' that tends to exist in the various opinions bandied about. What conclusion do you draw and what would you recommend the potential buyer (thats me now BTW) should take into consideration in wanting a decent headroom and suitability for double and electric. Sorry it's so obviously personally motivated, but I am looking for a rig as you know. Cheers in advance Jake
 7.
Surely the neck must have been hanging out of the window ?
nope, back seat down, neck between seats
 8. I had 2, one was for Robert Wilson who owns JBL, Taylor and Harman amongst others, now there's a guy who lost money to Sound Control. The second was depping (again) for fellow BCr Carlosfandango. Function in a tent, nice place, great crowd, fantastic drummer, good night all told.
 9. I was on a TV programme at the ripe old age of twelve playing some song to back the school choir. I don't know if anyone has a copy of it.
 10.
£350?
I have to say BB that even at £350 it's clear to me that Mark is simply allowing for negotiating space. The implication in your post is that he is profiteering and I feel it unnecessary on your part to openly insinuate that. As Mark points out, some will go away with a poor impression, despite you later clarification. I really think it's incumbent upon us all to hold back from knee jerk criticism, as impressions can be lasting. If you feel a sense of disquiet at changes to a policy, albeit unspoken and to my mind largely imaginary, of the principles of trade in this forum, I hardly think this thread is a reasonable place to make your feelings known, as the sole bearer of the weight of that disquiet is Mark, and for reasons you go on to undermine in your own reply... A little late for me.
 11.
Hi jake I've got a epifani UL210 that you can try at the gig on Sat if you like. Very light, very loud and sound fab with electric fivers and EUB/Uprights. Alt my Shroeder 410L....awsome cab but might be a bit overkill for your needs. let me know and I'll make sure its there for soundcheck. I've got a couple of poweramps as well eg QSC 2400PXL.
Hi Carl, if it's not too much trouble that would be great! (the epifani with a power amp that is) It will give a chance to hear my Alembic pre (and Alembic bass) really working. So yes please. but really only if it's not too much trouble many thanks Jake I'll PM you too
 12. Really fantastic writing throughout. 'God only knows' is one of my all time favourite pop melodies. The liner notes are good too.
 13.
Your pre amp into Dood's power amp (if you go for anything else you'll spend more and get less) into either one or two Epifani or Bergantino 112 cabs.
Thanks Chris, I am inclined to agree. The thing that turned me on to 12" cabs was going, alembic pre into a small PA (owned by one of my bread and butter gigs) the cabs being EV stage 200s. A real roundness to the sound especially of the double bass. That was through a humble peavey mixer amp too with my channel flat. Amazing definition to the bass. I have been looking at 2x12 cabs too. Jake
 14.
Hi there! Well... may I recommed the power amp I have for sale, if weight is an issue? it's a 1u rack at just 8.5kg http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=20988 Cab-wise, I think the suggestions above are pretty on the money. I'm on the slightly larger cab solution using a 6x10 from Epifani. It's a big box but, as we proved at the last bass bash, still a one man lift. Not sure if thats overkill though, for you? (Overkill!!! What am I saying!!!)
Cheers Dood, I have visited your fs thread on many a lustful occasion, at the moment I am not entirely sure if I will in fact need the rig as the tour is dependent on a couple of things dropping into place. If when I hear more this amp is still there I shall be discussing it with you.
 15.
If that was the fee, Jake, I'd do it naked...
Jake hatches a plan to give Bilbo half his next gig fee for the sheer fun of watching him (Bilbo) doing it naked
As for your second point, I offer you THIS http://youtube.com/watch?v=g6R0GjY3agU
OK fair play that's artistic integrity along with some f***ing serious grooving, although I do play like that on function gigs not...
 16.
I just got callled to do a gig with a 'new' function band. Here's the set list: Why do I bother?
get me £500 and expenses and I'll do it for you *Jake is considering offering a dep service for bass players that wish to retain their artistic integrity* I acknowledge thats seriously cheeky, but if you saw my grin you wouldn't be able to resist a giggle
 17.
Hi Jake, I currently have a Crest CA9 power amp for sale here.
Thanks for the heads up Stickman but at 47lbs I think I shall be looking at something a bit lighter, which I'm sure you understand. Jake
 18.
In the IP cabs' defence, the DSP in there adds a ton of max SPL to the cab by virtue of cunning compression and limiting, plus compensating to some degree for the cabs' inherent sonic deficiencies. I love the Acme cabs. Am hoping my own designs will measure up to that standard, maybe you'd like to try one of them if they do! Alex
Hi Alex, I'm watching your cabs with interest, I would like to hear something from them at some point if poss. If my singer gets signed maybe we could talk endorsement
 19. Also just to add, it's good thinking to go small charity wise, the big ones seem to attract so much attention I think the little ones get left behind a bit.
 20. There is a musicians benevolent fund which gives money to musicians who can no longer work or fall on hard times, they only give to people who have made a living from music, so very worthy in my opinion. You can donate through the Musicians Union and I can find your local contact for you if you wish, just PM me if you need to. Whenever the union has resolved payment issues or cancellation fee issues for me I a have donated £50 to the benevolent fund from whatever they recover for me. Jake
 21.
You young'uns may laugh but have the ointment ready cos it's comin' to you soon.
I hear ya! I have a recurring lumber problem that can leave me alone for months then floor me if I look at a big cab. For my main gig I have a 1U flightcase with a pre amp that goes into the PA. Other gigs I have a little polytone. As I put in an earlier thread I may have to get a rig for a tour in the autumn. I will be going light, even if there are roadies.
 22. Brazilian music is amazing. Sala is very exciting. Portugese is a lovely language for singing. Cuba has a tremendous musical tradition where musicians are socially highly regarded. There is some amazing latin music, the bass and drums is awesome in some of it. There is even a genre called New York salsa as it has caught on so strongly amongst NY musicians There is a wonderful book in the hal leonard series called 'funkifying the Clave' by Lincoln Goines (a great bass player) and Robbie Ameen (Drums and perc) Cubano Bop is a good british Latin band amongst others. That all I know. oh and I can play some of the (quite strict) bass patterns, they are fantastic. Investigate it, well worth it.
 23.
Jake....who are you gigging with at the Manchester Jazz Festival?
Hi Pete, it's a band called Bossa Nouvelle, run by a saxophonist called Suzanne Higgins, arrangements by Andy Schofield. Mike Walker gtr, Les Chisnall pno, Steve Gilbert drms, Brian Hargreaves perc, and five horns. Really lovely arrangements and some great playing, it's quite a gentle gig, but very very tasteful. Lots of Jobim, a few originals, some lovely grooves. Jake
