1.
1 a cheesy but amusing joke 2 a hint at a let down.... 3 an awesome pun! Jake - Where did you buy your intellect, and can I borrow some money?
I found it in a field in Wales.
 2.
It's all subjective! When I play with the premature ejaculators,
Do you wear waterproofs? sorry... I'll get me coat
 3.
For the record when we play well we're really good... so it's not as if we're one of these s**t poser bands who think they're the next metallica... but it seems that they don't have any faith in what we/they can do!
"If you haven't failed, you haven't lived." Not that you will fail. "The man who fears suffering is already suffering what he fears." These sayings are f***ing great, only problem is, the only people who think they're any good wouldn't fall foul of the problems in the first place.
 4.
Hi Jake any chance of you moving to the Wirral, so I can start upright lessons? Seriously though, can you recommend good tutors in the North West, as I'm seriously considering upright. I feel really excited about playing one, I have only played an upright once before and was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the sound was incredible. I know that double basses can cost tens, hundreds of thousands of pounds but could you recommend anything for a novice, are there any good Chinese ones for instance? Cheers Steve.
I used to live in Birkenhead Steve, by Prenton park, I work in the North quite often and will more than happily fire dates at you for when I will be up. I can get you started and probably find someone who is up there to give you a lesson or two, it depends on what you want really. I'm in Manchester from 6th to 9th july with daytime gigs 8th, 9th, 10th and a rehearsal on 8th eve, then I'm up again on 18/19th July for a gig at the manchester Jazz festival. I have also agreed to do the same for another BC'r in Manc so let me know if that sounds interesting. When it comes to choosing a bass it's a trade off between value and quality. You want it to sound good so it feels worth playing but most people don't want to spend a fortune to discover if they like it. I would be happy to give you a first lesson on my bass so you get to know what a decent one feels like then you could decide what would be a good next step. There is a guy who sell basses in Hoylake (or there was) Interested? Pm me if you are. PS the same goes for anyone on here, I work all over the country all the time so I'm always willing to try fit people in on double or electric or both! Jake
 5. Thats exactly what I do if I'm depping for a function band.
 6. Its not that I don't think information share is a great thing cos I do. but as an aside, transcribing or learning, by ear, basslines of any sort is some of the best practice you can do to improve: a )your playing and b ) your overall musicianship. As I said I'm trying not to pontificate as I love the fact that everone here is so willing to share
 7.
James C*nt?!?! Nice song?!?!? I'm going to have a rage-based heart attack!
A producer friend of mine played shaker on that track, earned more than in a month of production.
 8.
It's sarcastic comments like this that make teenagers think it's OK to rip their artistic integrity to shreds and whore themselves to radio 1 on the back of one of the two latest fads in music. Don't be so irresponsible Jake!
I've never been a good example to the youth, ask my kids!
 9.
As I think someone has already said, this is music we're talking about here - nobody will die.
I can't believe how irresponsible this statement is, It has been made clear in numerous threads here a number of times that artisitic integrity is a matter of life and death. Show some responsibility, please
 10. You should not do your first gig until..... three weeks ago. What everybody else says. Having a target gives you a better chance of hitting it then not having one. Stupidly obvious I know but it's amazing how frequently the obvious is overlooked.
 11.
Slightly off topic....but I prefer Dylan songs played by other bands....so does that mean Dylan murders his own songs?
Dylan is a major literary voice, and I love his work, but for me he is no musician beyond strumming a few chords.
 12. If you sound like you want to sound then it doesn't matter which way that's achieved. If you want to try different sounds and that can be done using figer style then learn it. Definitely don't do any one thing because you think others will think badly of you if you don't. f*** 'em.
 13. Haven't read so don't know if it's been suggested. 'Oh what a Night' 1963
 14. Sorry to add at this point that I have gigs on both proposed dates. Daytime and distant too (Malvern and Telford) I understand how impossible it is to satisfy everyones schedule so if it lands on those days I'd like to just say have a good one fellers.
 15.
Snap. Two of my all time favourites to play as well. So who knows who played on the Jacksons song?
Wasn't it one of them? I don't think it's Jamerson. but its beautifully played
 16. I think Jeff Pocaro (also of Toto, drums) was on some tracks too. It's a great song, groove, bass line, everything. In fact I think it's a great score all round.
 17. you're a lucky fellow. For all you less fortunate gentleman you could adopt my approach and buy the basses amps etc for your wife and when shy smiles wryly and says, "well it's nice but I didn't really need it" you can say, "it's alright love I will have it" Got her a gift and saved her the embarrasment of taking it back. So far I've bought my wife: a '78 jazz an '07 MK Alembic signature deluxe an 1880 swell back German Blockless wonder a 1900 german flat back (for her orchestral studies) an SWR Redhead A polytone An Alembic F1-X Pre amp I have plans to sell her double basses and buy her one much more expensive one. She'll be so excited.
 18. phew that a relief, I can take off my knuckle dusters. I was looking at GBH for the damage I was going to inflict.
 19. One of my favourite bass players is Jimmy Johnson. He is creative with root and fifth. I have been telling students for years, don't try to be clever until you can play the simple stuff to death. It took me 10 years to feel I was getting somewhere with Major Harmony.
 20.
This one is at the GAllery in Camden for £1400 (no, its not mine). Real looker. http://www.thebassgallery.com/seijazz5quilt.html
thats fooking loovely
 21.
Hey people, some money has come my way, so im in the market for a new 5 string, my budget is £1400.00. I was thinking maybe Lakland?? What are the best instruments with the best B string out there. Im hoping for a long list so i can salivate over them!! Thanks in advance...
I would look out for a second hand Alembic. (I am an owner) apart from that I think Warwick SS11s are lovely. I suppose a fender shape custom of some sort, Don't know about the B with those though as I've only had 4 stringers of that type. My Alembic has the best B I have ever come across.
 22.
*looks around for a Mike* I'll presume you mean me in which case, thank you! One tries one's best. Mark P.S. Sorry for the slight facetiousness, I couldn't help myself.
My sincere apologies MARK. Fcck f*** f*** I hate making mistakes like that.
 23.
I think that any group will sap your imagination and creativity if you let it, be it covers or originals. Beyond heavy improv based groups, can you think of any group that does not keep playing the same songs (written by them or others) over and over (to varying degrees) at gigs/events? You are responsible for being creative and imaginative. Yes, I acknowledge some environments are easier to be creative in than others, so doesn't that mean if you can thrive in a restrictive environment, then your creative ability will prosper in an unrestricted one. Why can you not be imaginative and creative doing covers? Are you really restricted to doing things exactly as recorded? Are you telling me that you can't think of something else that could work with that song, or perhaps even improve upon it, either on your instrument or someone else's? Surely that is a great opportunity to be creative and imaginative right there... Mark
Ahhhh!! the soothing voice of reason. Thank you Mike.
 24.
Finally, we say 'here is my twopenn'th' as it is an abbreviation of 'here is my twopenny's-worth' (the worth of two pennys) as opposed to 'here are my two pennys'. Now I really AM talking b******s.
It's a collective noun isn't it? So "is" would be correct. And as Mikey said it's one item, despite the denomination of currency therein. (jake will not be outdone in talking bollox)
 25. Indeed Ped, it's on the album I mentioned and I was listening to it whilst posting (which is why I did)
