  1. Lovely job, you must be very proud of it I have done a couple of string through basses and a couple of Tele style guitars with the brass ferrule block and I would agree, it does seem to add to the sustain. I've tried the basses top loaded, but they seem better strung through the body Nice one, you've inspired me to get my finger out!
  2. There is an Americam forum called TDPRI, about Telecasters mainly (I know, Tele is a four letter word) but I love them, they are easy-ish to build, and the the variations on a theme nearly always look cool They have a Home Build section, some set ups are more professional looking than amateur, but one bloke in particular, named Scatter Lee does some excellent builds with tools typically found in an enthusiasts workshop, and is very good at building jigs or devices as solutions to a problem, very much a "can do" or should I say "can do without" attitude, when others seem to have a machine shop in their garage His 'gater photos are a nice diversion too I have wisely spent many hours reading his numerous builds, well worth a look and very educational http://www.tdpri.com/threads/completed-scatter-lees-build.467702/
  3. Lovely job, that finish has got the wheels in my mind whirring around for a 5 string project I have on hold at the moment
  4. Hi As in a slightly earlier post regarding bridge replacement, I have a very nice mexican p bass, it plays quite nicely and i love the looks....Lake Placid Blue, gloss neck with rosewood board from a Blacktop precision bass, parchment guard and bridge cover....:....very tasteful Now, most people seem to agree the main difference between MIM and USA is the hardware, and having played a US precision recently, I would go along with that So, what I intend to do is 'discretely' improve/replace the hardware on this bass, I'm keen to retain as much of the 'retro' looks as possible For example, in my other post I have asked if any of the aftermarket bridges will fit under the bridge cover Now I'll get to this point! I have replaced the existing p pickup with an excellent Bare Knuckle unit, and I also have one of their jazz pridge pickups to make this a PJ bass, married to a stack knob arrangement kindly provided by the Maestro of this parish.......we all know who! I'm a big Smiths fan and love Andy Rourke's recorded sounds, which mostly came from a Yamaha PJ So, which bridge pickup positioning is best, 60's or 70's and why? As the bridge pickup is a BK 60's one, would that position suit it more? I seem to remember reading sometime ago there are pros and cons either way in terms of voicing, output etc Any advice is welcome Thanks
  5. Hi I have a mexican p bass which I am currently tinkering with and I want to upgrade the bridge for something a bit more adjustable and substantial However, as it's a lovely Lake Placid Blue, with a gloss neck from a blacktop, and a faded looking parchment guard, I'd like to retain as much of the old school look as possible, including the bridge cover So, has anyone successfully used one of the aftermarket bridges EG Hipshot, Schaller, Gotoh etc and kept the bridge cover in place? I'm open to any suggestions for and against, and not worried if a little 'fettling' would be required, as long as it's worthwhile Thanks in advance
  6. Would this be of help https://www.kompoz.com/music/
  7. Another to consider is Liberon finishing oil, same kind of stuff as those already mentioned, it's a polymerised oil, so it goes on like oil but dries more like a varnish Same technique as the others, I've used it on bodies and necks, if you do a lot of coats, its best to flatten it after 3 or so with 0000 wire wool, then add more coats. You can polish it to a gloss or wire wool it to a matt sheen Easier to repair than lacquer as well, and easily available in diy shops
  8. Nice project, I'd go for top right personally, although I also like the 2 pickup teal without the scratchplate, perhaps with black grain filler? I've started a new scratch build, a 5 string along the lines of a Sandberg VM5 and I'm hoping to stain the swampash body a dark blue/black, so I'll be following your build closely Good luck Harry
  9. I made my own with quarter lines, best of both worlds
  10. Got one of the first ones that came out, great idea, and very handy to record with Bargain at this price GLWTS
  11. I Have one on a Mexican P and I love it, in fact I managed to find a BK jazz bridge pickup to make it into a PJ Bare Knuckles are great pickups
  12. ABBA, no brainer, you get to be Rutger Gunnarson and stand behind Agneta
  13. If you or someone else could get the front panel off, you could consider having it covered with hydrographics
  14. I've just upgraded to a laptop with an Audient ID14 too and the pre's are awesome Great interface
  15. Traded a burgundy Ric and a fretless SB1000 for a new birdseye maple Wal fretless in the mid 80's Didn't think it was that heavy to be honest Later traded it for a Strat and a Vox amp in a moment of madness Don't have either any more, don't miss them, but every time I pick up a bass I wish it was that Wal.....or any Wal
