3. Just received some gold knobs from Badass, very prompt and fairly priced A pleasure to converse and deal with Thank you kindly Cliff
4.
Wolverinebass Posted 02 April 2013 - 04:20 PM It's the sort of thing that people live for. Getting cloned Wal pickups and a circuit. That thread on TB has been going on for about 5 years. It'll never happen. For those moaning about Wal not selling the pickups, why should they? If they did, I bet they'd sell a lot less basses. However, that's another story. Had this come to fruition I did toy with the idea of getting a neck and body from Warmoth and splatting the clones in it. In the end I realised that was pointless regardless if SGD had managed to do it anyway as it wouldn't be a Wal. If you really, really want the pickups there's a bloke on TB called MPU (based in Finland) who made some 8 coil pickups for some bloke to put in his spector. I believe they were in EMG casings. Dunno how much they'd be. Then you'd have the fun of trying to track down a comparable circuit. Good luck with that. I don't consider £4000 too much to spend on a great instrument (providi...
When I was doing my Blingray build I did a build diary in TB and MPU PM'd me offering one of his quad coil pickups in a MM style housing for £50 Its not cosmetically similar to a Wal pickup, and I've not heard a soundbite of one but combined with something like an ACG filter based pre, it's about as close as you could get with an emulation, and I did consider taking up his offer. Who knows.......one day!
5. Tasty What kind of bridge is that?
6. I've got a hankering to attempt something in the style of a Rob Allen semi-hollow with a piezo bridge, you could do a hybrid a bit like that semi hollow P bass
7. Very nice sound clip, why not fit a piezo bridge if it sounds like that Best of luck with your project Bassbuss Harry
8. Awesome talent, well worth seeing live, her voice gives me goosebumps
9. As I understand it the " not getting on " angle is another case of press and media embellishing or fabricating a story because its more entertaining than the truth. I'm sure there might well have been friction, and under the immense pressure and scrutiny they must have been under that's no great surprise, but it's fairly well documented that they all still get on and keep in touch with each other Good documentary though, and her new material sounds great. I'd like to see her performing live too especially with Rutger Gunnarsson on bass, one of my playing heroes
10. Whilst tapping in a truss rod on this neck, intended for a 5 string build, it split just behind the 1st fret. Its a kind of sharks mouth shape and extends for 30mm between the two walnut stringers. On closer inspection of the truss rod channel, there is only about 2mm thickness of wood at that point. I do intend to put a 2mm black veneer in between the neck and the fingerboard, running the length of the neck and headstock and I wondered if the neck would be ok to repair with Titebond, or if its off to the scrap bin with it All advice welcome, Harry
11. "Oh bugger" Whilst working on the neck, I was tapping in the trussrod from the headstock end when this happened. On closer inspection of the trussrod channel it seems there is only about 2mm of wood on the back of the neck at that point, an obvious weak point. even though I will be using a 2mm veneer along the length of the neck between the neck and the fingerboard, I don't think this will be strong enough so it's looking like a new neck will be needed. Any thoughts? Anyone recommend a supplier of decent quality neck blanks?
12. My favourite band, well worth spending some time listening to some of their lesser known songs. Mozza is a bit like Marmite though, I always took him with a large pinch of salt and still find him amusing, I think that's how he intended it to be really.
13. That's lush You must be so proud of your work, any sound lips we can enjoy?
14. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1 if I am correct in my assumption, these are the same as ebanol. I found a few posts on here about them, mostly the aftercare it seems. If you search the Luthiers Corner section on Talkbass there are a few cases of people who have used them long term on fretless basses and seem impressed with the performance........which would encourage me to give it a try. Is it that much cheaper than black ebony, or are you specifically using it as an alternative for it's unique properties? By the way you can get a board from Rothko and Frost for £28 http://shop.rothkoandfrost.co.uk/fingerboard-blanks-s/3135.htm This sounds like an intriguing build by the way, can we have some more details please? Good luck Harry
15. Looking forward to this week........Bonnie's Raitt and Johnny Marr? Should make up for Noel Gallaghers Low Flying Brother! What a bell end
16. A big thank you from my son Lewis to Mr Hobbayne who donated a used set of EB strings which went onto his Westfield P bass and improved it no end Thanks from me too Best wishes Harry
17. After a while I noticed a problem with the truss rod, it was fully adjusted but not having any effect, so I decided I may as well dismantle the bass and finish it off completely. I removed the neck and steamed off the fingerboard, the truss rod was buggered, I got a new one and altered it so that it will be body-end adjustable. I also opted for a maple fingerboard as I don't have a bass with one, I will also put in a black veneer along the length of the neck under the fingerboard and then running out over the headstock and finally a maple veneer over the front of the headstock. I did this on a mahogany neck I made for a telecaster using maple veneer and a rosewood board and it looks great. I have spent some time cutting out a "Rubis" logo from a maple veneer which will go on the headstock over the black veneer and should look nice. I finally decided on a colour I liked, its a metallic BMW colour called Cosmos Black and have just finished lacquering it tonight. Although I have a compressor, I just used Halfords rattle cans as that was where I had found the colour, and I didn't want to get the paint mixed up at a paint shop in case it didn't look right. The finished article looks quite good and should cut and polish up quite nicely. While the body is drying I will potter on with the neck, I am only intending to use side fret markers, maybe some small aluminium tubing with a black filler instead of black dots, and the neck will be tru-oiled as I love the feel it gives and it hopefully could be done by the time the body is dry!
18. Blimey, it's been such a long time since I updated this post I had almost forgotten that I'd started it. In my defence I have been busy with other builds and have actually been using this whilst tinkering with it, a sort of working project. I got the opportunity on this site of a used Delano alnico MM pickup and decided that this bass will have a single pickup in the Stingray "sweetspot" so I filled in the existing pickup routes (the G&L bridge pickup placing is closer to the bridge) and did a new one. I also filled in the cavity under the bridge and one of the switch holes as this one will have only have two switches; a bright switch and a series/parallel switch. I changed the jack socket for an electrosocket one, then removed the string ferrules and made a nice heavy brass ferrule block. Once I had filled it and sanded it down I let my kids, Ruby and Lewis decorate it for me with a permanent marker, I thought it looked quite good in a Flea-bass kind of way. Then I wired it up tried it out and was so impressed I left it like that for quite a while.......definitely he sound I was looking for, the Delano is a fantastic pickup and Tommo's pre sounds awesome with it.
19. Years ago I had a lined Aria SB1000 then went to an unlined Wal and the change over was fine. I then also went a long time without a fretless and when I got back into it, I was in a similar frame of mind as yourself so I made a fretless neck for my Blingray which has quarter lines and found these to be the best of both worlds. Maybe you could find a bass with these? Good luck Harry
20. Anyone tried one of these? I have heard of their guitars and watched videos of their build process on youtube, but I didn't realise they did a bass, very nice it is too! I spent quite a while entertained by their interactive bass builder, and on reading the specs its interesting to see that they use thermo treated woods, I know this may be opening a can of worms, but hey, this is the place to pontificate is it not? Can anyone vouch for the effectiveness of this process? I have read a little about roasted Musicman necks on their forum, but it's arguable as to whether they are subjective and unbiased! 21. The link says manufacturing error, we had a similar recall on our Audi and that's still reliable
