1. To be honest I like a lot of pretty hard on the ear 'experimental' stuff, Zorn, Ground Zero etc etc, and I've played a fair bit of 'room clearing' music too (whether or not by design ). As such I feel very definitely in a position to cast judgement over the efforts as represented by this ickle vid - since my taste and experience include stuff along these lines (and way harsher). My conclusion is it is just poor. Its definitely hiding behind a veil of "we're so complex and on the edge that you couldnt understand, man" but in fact its tedious, uninteresting, uninspiring badly written and as far as I can tell badly played (difficult given the medium to be sure though). Give me Torture Garden by Naked City any day, that's really amazing entertaining, inspiring and damned fun to listen to. Cairo Chop Shop, Dead Spot and Dead Dredd are three of my all time favourite tracks of all time like (look up Torture Garden on GrooveShark, stick with it though, you will struggle ). N.Y Flat Top Box is hysterical too! Damn I forgot how good Speedfreaks is, funky as hell in places JauquoXXXX please go back to the drawing board, its in there somewhere mate, but this isnt it IMO....
2. To clarify they both use a switching (digital) power supply, but the LMII and III both use an old school analogue amp, whilst the F1 and F500 (and SD800) use a digital amp too. Sound wise everything above is spot on.
3. Hello and welcome to the site Igor...
4. Bumpage for a tip top top bit of kit chaps, snap it up!
5.
Berg IP 112 Stack! Change your preamp to suit your mood
Allo! Wondered when you'd turn up matey No pics of said rig. Anyone whose interested I had a go on this when I went to pick up Plux's HT115, now that really is the ultimate portable powerhouse tone monster rig (the bass is, you know, 'ok' and all too )
6.
I think it was the finish and size that put me off of them really. 2 as a stack would be nice to see tho Agree with you there, the Bergs do have that certain presence at a gig!
Youser!
7.
If I go Berg again it will be ceramic again. I'm thinking big NV cab, or two small 12s. I appreciate the AEs have a great look, and weigh less, but when I A/B'ed some to me there was an inherent neo aggressive honk which is nice, but I'd rather dial it in. Weight now has become a non issue for me, my tone preferences come first. Not knocking neo bergs, incredible kit!
Dont forget to try the HS410 though! Phenominal cab, occasionally they go secopnd hand on here for daft money! I dont really notice a honk, but the ae410 has a bit of an upper mid agressive character that I like, although the sa450 allows me to dial that out if I want.
8. Go here:- and get yourself a Berg ae410 or go here and get the hs410 (if you dont mind heavy lifting) The current Berg 410s both team up with the MB LMII brilliantly and are pretty much as good as it gets. They are very very loud, punch, clear and focused. And I havent heard anything that comes close to mine. Either way get in contact with Mark from Bassdirect and go and have a play (he's poptart on here), you will not be disappointed!
9.
Really?????? AE series looks just like any another make of cab to me
No, for a couple of reasons, the finish is gorgeous, the attention to detail (those B's on the sides really really look cool) and the tinyness. The AE410 in particular, its a full on 410, as good as any other you can buy, at any cost IMO, yet its also the smallest 410 out there, it is tiny (have another look at the piccy of mine and Plux's rigs next to each other). I love the fact that it looks so much smaller than a 'traditional' 410, and yet puts out a tone to match anything else at a volume that knocks down walls. Its pure class! The AE210s on the other hand are only 12" deep, which looks great on a 210. In contrast to my mind the diminutive depth of the NV series looks a lot less cool, its just IMO though, and they do look fab, they just all remind me a bit much of the old HH 215s and the like. Very cool but not as cool as the AE series. At the end of the day though, who cares, they are the best looking cabs as well as the best sounding that you can get IMO. I'd be chuffed to have any of them behind me at a gig!!
10.
These two win on looks. If I had room I would have both. I dont have a car big enough for either
If you say so I've seen the NV series next to the AE series and for me the AE has it on looks as well. My photography skills are, limited, at best, so dont try and compare anything from the photos I've taken
11.
I did have a Berg HT115 (sold it to Birdy/Flanker - I forget which!) but I never used it. In fact, I hadn't even unpacked it from the box it shipped in. I have old pics of my single IP112 at home, but I don't have any proper pics of my full IP stack... I must rectify this!
Yup, thats now Plux's one How cool is that!
12.
I wouldn't mind a go of a couple of HT115s or an NV, though. I'm totally sold on Bergs...
Yeah I know what you mean about the HT115, Plux's is such a great sounding cab! Lucky git
13. Well if you insist Mine:- Mine and Plux's:-
14.
OK, but ultimate means expensive!!. For ultimate bass rigs, the world touring, stadium playing professional bassist, depending on the genre, seems to mostly use; Eden WT800 with 2 XLT410 cabs, or Ampeg SVT2 with 810 cab, or Mesa Boogie 400+ with a 215 cab. Any of these rigs smaller brothers would give any non world touring player all that they could need. In my dreams I would use a Thunderfunk TFB750-A with 2 AE410 cabs, but in reality I've got the next best thing.
That or run off a BIG Aggie tube amp was my second choice. Of course I'd also need the full Berg NV range in case I needed something more old skool (damn IT there goes the GAS again!)
15. A pair of Berg IP12 stacks. Seriously, 4 cabs, 4 cones 2Kw of P-Funk Power baby! God above! As for a pre, maybe an Avalon or Summit, or a Neve. Fully custom FX board too. (damn you've brought on the GAS you swine!)
16. Holy Cow Bat Dude! Amazing story, what are the odds! Do rather hope it all works out for them though....
Something that Steve Lawson pointed out to me at my last lesson was is the concept of: Is it right? Is it good? Obviously too different things that require subjective thought Si
+1 Well put! I know you are talking about a jazz perspective and that there are, if not rules, then definite guidelines about what should or should not be played against a given chord, but at the end of the day your ear is the judge, and if its working for you then you are probably fine using it like that. I'm as far from a competent walking bassist as anyone who claims to be able to play a bass at all can be, but even I can hear a clunker when I drop one (which is most of the time )
18.
Cheers for the responses. I'm currently using a barefaced big one. I'm sure you know what its like -it doesn't have a tweeter but has a 8" midrange speaker and 15" speaker. Any ideas how this would cope with distotion? Also is there any particular size speaker that deals with it better? Do any sizes/makes sounds better or is it a case of personal taste?
You'll be fine.
19.
Errrr... that's a good thing, James. The older the better in most cases.
He's always telling people that
20. The only real thing to note is turn your tweeter down (if you have one and can) or get a distortion/overdrive that you can turn the treble down on if you cant negate the tweeter. Or go with a tweeter less cab if thats what you're asking. Paper cone top end is the key really. Thats why so many people dig the berg NV range for overdriven bass sounds, and why the AMpeg fridge is still good for something
21. Just a quick point of order, bass does not get louder further away from the amp. It actually gets quieter like every other sound. However a combination of getting more on axis with the amp bringing up more mids and highs, which your ear processes far better, and possible additive room nodes can certainly make it easier to hear when you arent standing over the cab. All the advice to point the cab at your lugs is spot on. Get it way up at ear level! Chances are a PA monitor wont even come close to handling bass, the guitarist should go through the PA (he needs a much lower wattage amp in all probability) his effects will work just fine, especially as most PA monitors will handle guitar just fine thank you very much. He is talking complete plop. I had the same battle with my guitarist for a good while, now he swears by it.
22. Best: Bassdirect Worst: Oh so many....
23. Absolutely possible. You'd be looking for a device called an active crossover....
24. Heeeeyyyyyy sounds like you are in exactly the right place at the right time. Nice one!
25. Sounds superb matey! All the very best of luck with it!!
