This list is that short and I know this is a very open question but having listened to likes of 51m0n on this forum I know there's some of you out there who are funk inspired
Eeeek, I must really bang on about this. Sorry  You've already had the best advice. Listen to it Where to go? Well you'd do a lot worse than the Craig Charles show. He covers _alot_ of ground. Spotify is good, the Radio channel allows you to select an era and a genre (Funk 70's is good, if often mellow place to start) +1 to James Brown, The Meters, Sly Stone, Parliament and Bootsy +1 to "Leave out slapping for now" - it will take you a while to get there. There is a funk101 Topic over on Talkbass which has links to LOADS of great funk tracks, really get over there and get downloading, a lot of it is not available any other way (not on CD, vinyl out of print etc) In terms of syncopation, that will become natural in the end, I dont even know I'm syncopating any more, really, its just what happens when I play - drives my band up the wall when they want to get all butch and rocky - there I am playing Sly and The Family Stone style grooves
Hey, that thing looks sexy! And a third of the price of the RE27. Hmmm... FTW indeed!
It is. Properly up to date bit of mic tech that. Frequency plot is ace, would love to have one for vox, never mind bass! If I was setting up a studio right now my current 'reasonable price' mics list is this:- Heil PR40 Heil PR30 Cascade FatHead 2 (stereo pair) AKG C 414 B-XL II (stereo pair) Neuman TLM103 Red5 audio RVK7 Drum kit microphone set (check their mics out - really, stupidly cheap for what they do, I'd use either the Fatheads or C414's for overheads) Some odds and sods (few 57s and 58s for when I need more) So yeah its a about three grands worth, but back in the day that would get you a vocal mic.... Sorry I'm a bit of a tragic case when it comes to looking for the best bang for the buck wrt mics
That's quite astounding!
To be fair I think at the limit of where we got to the Compact wasn't quite keeping up. The full stack may well have had even more to go, but in any event, we couldnt have gone any ouder in there without knocking basses of the wall (literally). It was a shocking demonstration of the quality of Alex' product. I really wish he had the Big One with him. The Big One would trounce the full stack IMO. It is waaaay louder - or at least seems to be from my recollection. Best bit is this A/B happened in GAK as a demo to Mr GAK-bass, Mark. Certainly made hi eyebrows move North! Oh and to clarify I was only there on the off chance, again not affiliated to Alex' company, just very timely.
Alex's cabs do tick a great deal of boxes. Quite like the idea of a monster 2x15 Big One ;o)
You will only hurt yourself!
-
Well I have played Alex's Compact and his Big One. I have A/B'ed his Compact with a Mesa full stack (410 and 115!) and it really easily held its own IMO. Using the Mesa head for both. I preferred the tone of the Compact over the Mesa gear, volume wise there was nothing in it really. Both his current cabs are excellent. But I highly recommend the Big One if you have that cash to spend. It blows the Compact away (really!) I am convinced you will not be in any way disappointed. It will be louder for its weight than anything you have ever heard. And is way smaller than a full stack. You, in all likelihood, will not be able to push it beyond its capabilities with any commercially available bass amp. It sounds excellent. And that was before the latest crossover revision (which makes it even smoother in frequency response). I am not affiliated with Alex in any way, I just happen to live in Brighton like him, I really believe his is the best new cab design I've heard in years. If I was in anyway unhappy about my Bergantino ae410 I know exactly what I would be buying to replace it. Do yourself a favour and take the exchange rate out of the picture!

Heil PR40 FTW!
-
Well if you hadnt noticed there's been a bit of an economic disaster on all fronts. In our case that has meant the exchange rate has gone to the dogs. We did have the strongest pound/dollar pound/euro rate for a very long time. Now its the worst. That means that if you shop needs to buy more of something from overseas it will cost them a huge amount more. You as the buyer, get to help them out. It's not complicated!

You'll be needing to update your piccy then, its so passe now
And if so, this is probably the Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/lovescandalnonego I like the OP's style, making us guess the band and style of music instead of just telling us!

Mainstream rock/pop
Hmmm no rock there though is there, and not funky enough for me I'm afraid - not that they'd be interested anyway, too old, too fat and too funky . It is very standard pop stuff to me. Fine if thats your gravy train, not what I'm after anyways, good luck!
Hey if we're talking about a gorgeous competition, then I've got bigger breasts than anyone else on this forum and I look good in a swimsuit.
Yes but your bum is far to flabby, and the cellulite does you very few favours, not to mention the nicotine stained teeth.... I on the other hand am staggering in a bikini - really , you'll not have seen anything like it!
I bet the band's called Love Scandal. With skills like this, I could have my own detective show. Set in the '70s. Hmm...
Blimey Mr TheFunk, I bet you're right too! That was like Clouseau, only not funny
-
How much?
Didnt have a sticker - and it wasnt Mark in there so really no point asking, cos Mark would have given me a better deal. Mark at BassDirect has them listed at £879 on his site currently.

Just tried the new MB Tube LM800 at GAK (they have the 500 too) Sounds fine, but for the life of me I couldnt really tell much difference between the tube and solid state sides to the preamp. Oh and it is VERY loud. Humungously loud! Like the fact you can effectively plug in two basses and control the gain of each separately - nice!
-
Yeah, lets not pretend that the mullet never happened (although it thankfully never happened to me )
MB1. "Fair Enough!....i only hear the bass!"
You lucky luck lucky b@st....
MB1. I honestly dont think the Eighties was the best of Musical times!....but theyre was Good Bassists about playing Catchy basslines even if you didnt like the band!.. 51m0n just mentioned 5 star...whose bass player was a young Randy Hope Taylor.....see what i mean?.
Look he could be the best bass player of all time, I loathed, and still do, everything produced by Five Star, and all their ilk!
I'm all for it...... 80's rules!
Err no they didnt. They didnt rule at all!!!! The 80's was largely a torrid pile of fermenting gerbils p155 dressed up in rubbish clothes The pop scene was diabolical IMO (can you say Five Star?) Up until the death of the indie charts there was at least something to listen to, sometimes (Fuzzbox' Bostin Steve Austin was a cracking album!). I consider that death to have been Erasure and Kylie Minogue both getting to no 1 in the Indie charts. The cheek! Mind you, I hate The Smiths with a passion too, and all that New Romantic cobblers. I did like Public Enemy, and The Beastie Boys (esp Paul's Boutique), and quite a lot of the early Electro stuff, but that was a loooongg way from mainstream (ignoring Doug E Fresh - please!) Two Tone was great but that lasted about 5 minutes, and some of the goth stuff was a laugh, but come on Kajagoogoo, get the hell out of here!!! I dont care how good a bassist he was or wasnt, it was an awfulawfulawfulawfulawful band! Thank god for dodgy punk clubs bashing out Stooges tracks, I'd not have survived but for that and early thrash

Kajagoogoo I hated them with a passion and I was only 13. Class!
You can also play"radio" according to genre and decade so choose "Soul" from the 60's and 70's and you'll get a random selection of stuff that includes lots of Motown with thier great bass heroes: James Jamerson, Bob Babbit and Carol Kaye. As a track plays you can see it's info and follow that up.
Oh man! 60's & 70's funk, I'm in heaven the rest of the day..... What a brilliant feature!! Cheers
1,Then you are a good person and you are allowed a stay of execution....... 2,Of course...My statement was madness,But how many here are capable of critique on an equal musical level??? 3,They dont, but who can blame them? A quantity of people on here..are..not....very..good..musicians...(said at risk)....dont read/wont read types..The 'I cant see the point in 5/6/+ string Basstuned instruments...The sort that if these 'better' musicians attempt to give a hand too, would just end up being unable to see the aid being handed too them... I think there's a lot to be learnt from and for all,me included. Last night i was shown a great tip on 'Cleaning' with WD40...and 'Bore oil' is THE BEST for Ebony & Rosewood fingerboards.
1. Naturally, and when I'm Emporer I will have anyone who suggests otherwise shot at the first opportunity 2. Who says a critique is only valid if given by someone on an equal musical level. Thats nonsense, I am not on an equal musical level to Mozart I'm sure, but I am on an equal human level and therefore feel my appreciation or not of his music allows me to have an opinion on it and comment accordingly 3. My reading sucks, my walking sucks. So what. Its not something particularly at the forefront on the requirements for what I do do well. I groove like a b@stard thanks. Given that I'll comment on anyone's playing as I see fit, if they are too busy, or can't take another opinion then fine they dont have to listen. Frankly I can get what I need from a person's playing, all too often if I get to hear what they have to say about it it loses something for me.
-
None of us..and that includes EVERYONE,is even fit to even pass comment on their playing, because most of you wouldnt have the balls to actually say it to their faces, nor have the intellect capable of explaining why you dont like it beyond "I think its sh*t.."
Just to let you know, if I didn't think much of someones playing and had the opportunity to talk to them, and they asked, I would see no reason to lie,I would say what it was I didn't like to the best of my ability, since they were kind enough to ask. In the case of Vic, its easy, he's a nice guy, and all I could say would be what I've said here, that I feel that he seems to have been driven down a certain path in his playing because that aspect of his playing has got him so much attention: which of course I may be wrong about. That his ensemble work (grooving or soloing) blows me away, but I don't enjoy his solo stuff as much. Not that I could play it, what on earth has that got to do with any of it. If he asked if there were any solo bassists I liked, I'd say some of Manring's stuff has left a huge mark on me, both in sheer enjoyment of his playing, and the way he has pushed the boundaries of the instrument down such a unique path. I am allowed to state my opinion. If asked I certainly would see no reason to falsify it. Any less would be very disrespectful to the player in question in fact. I am absolutely ENTITLED to pass comment, unless we are suddenly living in some other place where I don't have even the most basic freedom of speech and expression. Any suggestion otherwise is absurd. If pros don't want to hear or ask what people here think they don't have to come here. If they do, then they should be aware that people have every right to politely state their opinions. If they don't like that idea, that's fine too, as long as they don't come here.

The Michael Manring video I was talking about is Michael Manring Bass Essentials on Hotlicks (VHS only I believe) Here's a picky:- http://bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=545 Its well out of print, and a shame that it is cos he cover some really important stuff on it IMO
