Ah right it makes sense now. I hadn't thought about the nut being almost irrelevant once a note is fretted......interesting stuff....
-
Can't really comment myself but a bassplayer i know and who's gear i've used regularly owns an Epifani 4x10 and he claims to be able to lift it with one hand. Fantastic sound either way, nice punchy mids, my favourite!!
Bass forums develop the forgotten art of GAS
haha

I tihnk around where i live there isn't much work to be had, especially as a young player. Being able to read to a good level just gives you that slight edge over bedroom bassplayers.

All the stuff's in good nick and there's pictures/spec etc if anyone wants them. It's got to go as i'm upgrading my amp setup, it all works fine. Up for grabs aaaare..... "four by ten", for single speaker cabs i'd say just "one fifteen"

I bought one from my local shop for £350 and a part ex. In total what i would have payed in cash (without a case for the head) would have been £450ish.

I just re-read an old guitar and bass magazine and it was the issue from a good while back where the repair man did up an old columbus jazz bass, stoned the frets, replaced pickups etc. In the article he claimed that the nut needed replacing due to amateur nut adjustments. Q1) Why would anyone want to 'adjust' the nut and how??. There was a picture of the nut although to my untrained eye in nut observing it looked ok to me. He then went on to say that replacing the old nut with a bone nut would improve the sound of the instrument. Q2)How does the material of the nut change or improve the sound? Q3)If it's worth doing, how much does replacing the nut cost and is it a job you'd recommend that someone un-experienced should carry out themselves? Thanx a lot.

What 1 question to any bass player would you ask?
fusionbassist1 replied to Freuds_Cat's topic in General Discussion
yves carbone -"what on earth do you think you're doing ???!!!!" OOORRRRR more importantly Jaco - "why don't you jus go see a doctor?" -
It's an online community...
2nd that. There's so many ways that we're helping each other by taking part in these forums. Mabye your guitarist would realise how important a knowledgeable (sp??) bass player is if he took the time to check out this website or it's guitar counterparts.
"fusionbassist1" refers to "purists" and "elitists". somehow I find this, uuhh, confusing.
Sorry for that...edited. It makes sense in my head, hopefully someone will get what i mean.
-
I was recently refered to as a 'purist' by one of my lecturers. By this he was refering to my preference of older valve gear, passive old vintage sounding pups and exclusive use of two finger picking on stage. I've always known i was a bit retro in my goings on but now i got a tag!! I have to say i like the idea of mabye trying to keep alive perhaps what might be seen as 'the old way of playing' by hardcore dbl thumpin', slappin an' a poppin, tappin an' a shreddin bass players. Does anyone else think of themselves as a 'purist'??? Anyone at all prod of that as I am?? Tell us why you like the ways of times long passed....come on...i can't be the only one.....
Caught it about halfway through. When I saw the bass I thought 'uh-oh, maybe he feels obliged to do a Jaco thing just cos of who he's playing with' but he has a style of his own and appears totally effortless, very impressive. The bass was fretted anyway so we'll let him off
I second that!!! At first I thought it was actually a Jaco tribute bass with the 'distressed look' or soemthing but then noticed the jumbo neck inlays and was like...ok then. His playing was technically fantastic although there was something i couldn't quite get about him, couldn't put my finger on it at all. I very mcuh enjoyed Tower of Silence. I also only caught the second half actually, a good mainstream example of the wisdom joe had accumilated over the years i think. Good stuff, more of that good stuff please BBC!!

Is there a bass line that you just couldnt do?
fusionbassist1 replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
As my forum name might imply, I've spent a fair time trying to suck the essence of jaco out of his records but people like him aren't good because of the amount of notes they CAN play but because of the emotion, train of thought and feel the pieces they play and write have. I firmly believe that it's far more likely to see someone play chromatic fantasy faster than Jaco did (due ot the sophistication of modern bass playing techniques) than it is to ever see someone match the sensitivity in the '76 album version of Continuum and other similar tracks. I have and never will get close to anything Victor Wooten has done, i've tried a few times at the "easier" bits of the 'A Show Of Hands' album. I just sit there for half an hour and end up saying to my self "you know what Ben, it'll take you a few years to get the techniques here down to a decent level of fluidity let alone get round to learning the piece 'as is'.........cuppa time?....I think so!" then go cry for a while. edit.... "I think there is a point to be made here. Many of these monster bass lines/solos are played by people in an improvised setting. Take Jaco's 'Havona'. He didn't have to 'learn' that bass line as he had constructed his lines around the tunes he had written and used a couple of dozen of his own stock licks. Anyone who has spent any length of time listening to Jaco will know that he, like all musicians, repeats himself over and over, using his own signature licks to leave his mark on a piece. But it is important to note that much of what he does is made up on the spot ('Teen Town' being an obvious exception). It is actually a lot harder to learn a passage that is played like that than it is to burn one of your own. In a more conventional setting, someone like Bruce Foxton would have written a line that felt comfortable under his fingers and that he could play without too much difficulty. Noone in their right mind would compose a complex line for a song that he could pull off only 3/10 times. Someone once said 'amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can't get it wrong'. Geddy Lee plays that solo lick off 'YYZ' perfectly everytime. It can't be hard for him as a, he wrote it and b, he has played it 200 times a year ever since. But have you heard him crucify 'Girl From Ipanema'? Easiest song in the world and he f***s it up! Francis Prestia is known as THE finger style funk player but that's all he does. He can barely put together a jazz bass solo, probably can't play a fretless in tune and definately can't read music. It is more important to play musically and to your strengths than it is to be able to execute every great line you have ever heard. Work on your technique, yes, but learn to play the music not the musicians! And don't get dispondent you can't pull off 'Red Right Returning' by Michael Manring. He probably can't play 'Ace of Spades' like Lemmy either (can you?)." Very, very well said (Y). Music is a medium to be used for expression, not to be coppied from person to person IMO. But if u want to do something new, it's important know what's come before. -
One of my outandish claims to fame is that i know a bloke who's mother taught Norman's daughter to play piano. Fantastic bassplayer, am i right in saying he also did backing vocals at the same time live??

Thanx for that. I guess it's down to personal preference then. -
From the horse's mouth Furmansound.com. The consensus seems to be that these are not actually necessary in the UK as the UK supply is fairly "clean", whereas US power supplies are not. Note that if it's just "surge protection" that you want then there are many much simpler (and cheaper) devices available.
http://www.thomann.de/gb/furman_pl8e.htm where abouts in the entire bass/head/two cabs setup does this go :s?? -
Great list of things to check and maintian. May i add that a multiplug with a surge protector is a safe idea usually, doesn't help with the hum but i think it's a goor precaution in general. thanx a lot.
I stand corrected and have learned something new (for which I am grateful). In which case there is a 'best' way to connect the speaker leads... that is as was suggested; 2 outputs from the amp each running to a separate cab.
Thanx very much everyone. Heavy duty Speakon connectors are the way forward then i take it. Could anyone suggest a log lasting Speakon cable then please.
-
my 70s V4B was ht enough for you not to want your hand on the back for 5seconds. Could someone clarify whether daisy chaining or going straight from both speaker inputs of the head is best please..... with impedence selector on 4ohms of course. Cheers

Is an Ampeg V4b as loud as an svt 3 pro?!?!
