I saw the list of what @Frank Blank was bringing and was releaved he had kept the Rob allens and got over his brief ACG phase. I thought I was quite settled with gear, and I brought 4-5 basses and my amp to the last one. Bit of a surprise to find that of all that only one bass still remains. oh and my cable is the same.

how does it work with VAT and stuff? Obv if I wanted to buy a bass from Ireland I now have to pay VAT.... how does it work if you visit with something?

Though I’ve read this thread and can’t work out who’s changing what and why? @Al Krow - you’ve got a tonelab in a carvin you don’t like but turned it up and you do like it, but still want to swap it??

I would agree with @peteb with his words of caution, I think it was lending a bass to someone who cranked the bass? 18db boost isn’t always what your amp and cabs want! however... j-retro and uni pre are different... j retro by standard has a bit of a bass boost pre-shape baked in. Uni pre you can defeat this, uni pre also has the ability to set thr upper and lower bounds of the bass boost... so you can set where this isn’t boosting 20-80hz from memory, and also set the top end. In my Lakland the bart pickups have quite a lot of low mids going on thst can sound very fat and muddy very quickly - so my bass boost is set up to boost everything below the gank and not the subs. I love it. But would agree with Pete B that it’s not for everyone.

Always preowned from someone trustworthy... but the best question is what do you actually want? There’s enough opinions out there that can sway you... then the question is more... “I’m thinking of buying a spector euro lx what should I look out for, or is there anything else about that trumps it and why?”

Yes - but it might be better I think to just get used to hitting save lots... previous zoom pod I had I haD it set up to automatically save - guess who turned the wrong thing 5 min before a gig starting and lost a whole patch. setting your own defaults for individual effects/amp models things is really useful though

I wouldn’t ever look down on a Yamaha Bb - especially the more recent ones. IMO a Yamaha 434/5 is easily the equal of fenders costing many times more. Plus 90% of folk don’t care what the bass is and just think it’s a big guitar!

If I went to see your gig I would kinda think of the basses you’ve talked about and be hoping to see a Gus ... I doubt someone could make a replica of one of them though!

This is an Internet forum, 90% of it is random dudes guessing - I think you maybe have got it confused with a peer reviewed academic journal or something - You asked for a logical reason why vintage could be considered different to modern- my answer was worded deliberately loosely to answer the question of “what could a logical reason be” based on things I know - but loosely enough that I might not be correct, and also I’m not going to make any claim that old wood makes better sounding instruments. But you asked for a logical reason that might apply, I provided one- discuss away . That’s how discussion forums work. Even if you disagree shouting out “What’s your source” or asking for data points that you know conceivably don’t exist, (or if they do would be hidden within academic papers beyond most of the reader’s comprehension) is a bit of a Richard move. For example “The likes of the very highly rated early 80's Japanese stuff (Squier aside) has not appreciated to the same degree as the big F (or S).“ have you got a source for that? Peer reviewed study. I mean it would be interesting to have a thread and try and work out the relative increases from retail to now On a load of high end Japanese stuff, and see the degrees of change in appreciation of different brands - but nah forget it What’s your source?

I dunno - I visited @walshy last year and played a load of his P basses - tried his '66, a Moolon P and a blue one he built the body for and put together himself - they all were very close tonally. The biggest difference was the colour and how much trouble I'ld get in from the wife for buying!

I don’t have any source material on hand to sum up how wood production has changed since 1945 no - the main question would be I think how long was it between felling and being made into a bass
