  1. There's two parts of this, the existing preamp and the East. It's a 1999 US Lakland and has the slightly darker Bartolini pups and original preamp ... I don't know if it was just me, or just my ears but I couldn't get on with the original preamp... the bass boost turned everything to mush, the mid cut turned the bass off, there were 4 different settings for the mids inside and I couldn't get any of them sounding great... What was wrong with it? Not sure. I think mainly how my ears were hearing it, and probably the it needed more input or something cos it seemed to sound better the louder I hit the strings. After 4-6 months of fiddling It was annoying enough that the bass was going to go... but the core sound unplugged of the bass is really nice... so.... The East was worth trying out. His preamps (IMO) are amazing. I find the Uni pre to be really really clean sounding. By that I mean not much distortion or colouration to the sound. I'm using a very good DI signal and Hellborg preamp I used to own as my yardstick to what a clean bass sound sounds like. It's high fidelity without putting very much colouration in at all. I've tried the Glockenklang 2 band... and if you boosted anything then you could tell it's sound signature and the fact it was a Glockenklang - the east doesn't do that. Active buffered blend, so the pickups aren't interacting from each other.... a tunable bass and treble control... plus a bright pick attack switch to instantly push the bass into a completely different sound (really good with the slightly darker sound pups) swept mids - which I find super easy to use... and a passive roll off too.... From spending ages playing with the old preamp I now have a setting for each pickup setting, and then can use the passive tone to taste... which is great. (bare in mind I've not really been playing much this year! :D) For balance... the Eq is clean like a PA desk - and powerful too... I think it was @peteb who pointed out that +15db of bass boost, in the wrong hands is not going to be good at all. So if you're someone who likes a preamp to give a certain colour, or want to turn everything full up... there might be better preamps for you...
  2. I've got one in a bag in my spare room I took out of my 55-94. What exactly are you trying to do? (ie my work is mental at the moment - so I can do a detailed diagram but it might be a few weeks... if it's a more specific question than that ask away. from memory it's not wired any differently than a standard Bartolini preamp... )
  3. For me... Best Buy: East Uni-Pre 5. Off someone here at a great price. It took a Lakland bass that sounded alright, but struggling to an amazing sound. He really is a genius John East. Worst: East Uni-Pre 5 ... er it's the only bass related thing I've bought this year. Mostly I slimmed my bass wall down from 4 basses to 2... and then preceded to get tempted by vintage precision basses.
  4. Three Jazzes.... Where's Lozz196 and what have you done to him? This really is a year of unprecedented changes and events. Probably, show off! Hasn't it got loads of different compressors in it you can change?
  5. No gain reduction meters on both HX ... the default settings are a bit gain boosting too ... but it’s good

    PJ conundrum

I was just going to suggest this... there might be things that only pop out at volume in the mix. Not literally pop out.... unless it’s dead spots or something.
  7. have you got a link to your Memoire? Be nice reading if Google translate is up to it!
  8. that's from the "sold" section of his website... but I get your main point RE this bass
  9. it is worth a bit more than £7k... https://www.andybaxterbass.com/collections/fender-precision-bass/products/1957-fender-precision-bass-2-tone-sunburst-2 In my search for a precision I actually ended up chatting to the seller the OP links too about vintage fenders. From chatting to him I think you're right that the vendor is probably ok, the sanity of vintage fender prices....
  10. Reverb prices generally can be a bit bonkers
  11. im glad you got your bass sorted for you
  12. I think there have been some issues with HX stomp getting fed Phantom - I make sure I ask for it to be off on my channel before turning on. JDi probably a nicer bit of kit whatever!
  13. in fact - if you go onto Phil Jones website and look at the Pictures they say Edifier on the arm too....
  14. The Phil Jones H850's they sell in EUK.... or the Edifier "tuned by Phil Jones pure sound" H850's they sell in the rest of the world?
  15. updated! If that's the only major error I did well! I get a bit out of my depth when it comes to input/output impedance's and the different levels...
  16. there are two types of signal we are talking about: balanced and unbalanced. Balanced is good because it generally is not effected by noise as much. To be balanced it need three connectors in the wire positive, negative and ground. Unbalanced has two conectors, positive and ground. Signal degrades over long cables. Typically unbalanced things like a bass use quarter inch jack sockets. Balanced things use XLR .... but the important thing is what the signal is - not what the plugs are... So in typical use a DI box converts a unbalanced signal to a balanced signal. It might also change the level and impedance but that's not relevant at the moment. So you plug a bass (that gives an unbalanced signal) into a JDi - and it converts it to a lovely balanced signal - which you need a wire with three connectors for... so you use the industry standard XLR and take lots of lovely bass signal to the desk.... sorted. If you look here at the back of the helix you can see two XLR out in the middle - sending balanced signal to the desk. Where it gets confusing with the HX Stomp and HX effects is we don't have any XLR - for the same reason that my iPhone doesn't have a headphone socket - there's not enough space. Instead we've got a 1/4 inch jack. ... which is what we typically use for unbalanced signals. BUT they have designed it so a 1/4 inch jack with three contacts (TRS) will get a balanced signal. So a TRS - XLR cable will do the same job as a XLR-XLR out of the back of your JDI A TS - XLR will give an unbalanced signal (and need a DI box to make it balanced) So in your case if you are replacing the JDI with the Stomp you will need one (or two for stereo) TRS-XLR cables to send to the desk (or converters) The downside is - that it's not a standard cable so you will need to buy them (and a spare) as you can't expect a venue to have them. (In worst case senario though you can use a ts-ts and a DI box!)
  17. I would bet you a pint it’s the same guy
  18. That’s not a difficult thing to work out! the name is a registered trademark... https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/1/UK00002427731 the owner of that trade Mark is easily searched and pops up with a fella who builds basses still under a different marque https://www.anacondabasses.co.uk/about-anaconda-basses
  19. so fed up with 2020 I bought a skinny stringed G****r

  21. Exactly- if one person can do it it must be possible. I don’t think he’s cornered the market, in so much be the only person doing it
  22. You know how people have their idea that they could make a mini business if they had the time - working out how to make really good cellulose tort would be mine.
