  1. The thing I can never work out, and it would be expensive to find out, is how good are some of these different aftermarket necks... as good a Harley Benton, as good as a Squier, or a mex fender, or USA or Sadowsky or where... reason is that I’ve built a few bitsas before, and it’s always a good way to sink a lot of dosh into a project, only to find the neck feels ok ish, and not as nice as other basses I might have ... so the bitsa doesn’t get played and the whole thing gets sold ...
  2. also depends on heel shape with a '51
  3. I think theres a few places near me where I could probably get two pints of lager for that... There are upsides to living in London too I'm sure!
  4. Or @BigRedX has got the taste for more expensive beer This is a bit simpler - I buy you and me a drink, if it’s the place in 1981 with 50p pints I’ve just spent a quid... I know some places where I could get two pints for that, but I’m not sure we would want to go there!
  5. I’ve been amazed seeing the value and desirability of first early 70s and then late 70s Fender skyrocket over the last few years.
  6. I’ve tried the one on the right! First time I had tried a 60s fender - oddly enough, (having played a few jazzes) my first thought was”this sounds a lot like my Sadowsky will Lee jazz” Not sure that’s at all useful comment at all though. Love the one on the left.
  7. they are quite powerful in fine tuning - esp treble boost if you use that. I really love the treble boost/pick attack whatever it's called when you pull the treble out, but with the passive tone backed a wee bit
  8. I made the same switch last month in my Lakland- I don’t know about you but mine is early enough to not have a separate battery compartment - it was quite a tight squeeze to fit everything in! it is brilliant - mine is louder than passive As the pickups are so quiet! I can live with that! How did you find the adjustable bass and treble frequencies inside. I found the bass quite tricky to set to do what I wanted! FWIW in my measuring and converting from 34 to 35inch scale the bridge coil of the MM pup is 60s jazz position. (The whole pup is slightly further towards the bridge than a stingray positioning)
  9. Last time I was in the guitar shop trying something they had a CS P, was a lovely bass, but not jaw droppingly so... then asked the price ...! I think it was about £4K!
  10. I had a thick grippy wide one on my old thumb bass (a 9lb one with neck dive) - and like you I found the neck dive I bigger problem than the weight. The strap could only cure it to a certain point and my shoulder and arm had to constantly be working against it. My old Peavey T40 weighed about 16+lb but balanced so for me when playing it was ok and like wearing a back pack. ive no back problems though and obv people who have will probably have very different experiences and medical advice, but for me a balanced 10lb bass would be preferable to a neck heavy 7lb bass
  11. Stop showing us it - it’s beautiful!
  12. He had a sunburst P on too before it but I missed seeing that
  13. They both Look great - how does that P sound with the dual soap bars?
  14. I graduated in 2007 just into the Great Recession with a degree in sculpture. i was lucky - I was on the best course, in the best 5 year block where for a while we were really good and had great tutors.
  15. whereas our tutors encouraged us to do whatever we wanted, as long as we did it properly. My old band formed out of a project we were doing.
  16. I think you can - I was. i went to art school and was literally trained to be creative, and then given tools to keep being creative and coming up with new ideas - even when I had no inspiration. Admittedly to be admitted to art school I had to show an aptitude towards creativity and a level of skill - but even that I would argue was nurture rather than nature. My mum encouraging me to be observant from a young age made a big difference. my education also gave me the knowledge of the rules and history of art and why to do things. Of intentionally breaking the rules and knowing why those rules are interesting to break. I started playing bass as a creative outlet that had no demands on my to reach a certain level - There are big gaps in my skills. But as I’ve learned to play I can tell that most the better players have a theoretical knowledge that means they can Play better.
  17. Scary to think that I think when I registered for basschat 13 years back I would have been mid 20s ... It’s been weird having all these older folk with disposable income selling things for secondhand prices to upgrade the starter basses to being in the position to buy those expensive instruments myself. But it’s been fun, I’ve tried everything I want to try, know what I like and for me personally know that gear is not the thing holding back my musical genius... it’s time, talent, practice, commitment and ability
  18. Part of me thinks that the lifetime membership to SBL would be a better prize for me. Ild use it, and then surely if I’m one of his customers Ild stop seeing his face before EVERY YouTube video I watch
  19. it's my 40th in 4 years too! Shall I start saving for a secondhand Navy blue sadowsky PJ ?
  20. I think the lockdown has led to a lack of traffic on basschat - we’re falling down the Google listings - so Ped is ordering nitro finished basses and starting fights about boutique American luthiers that’s only a handful of us have played... to get more traffic.... you wait, I predict Paul McCartney related thread next. thats my conspiracy theory, feel free to brand it on the back of your headstock!
  21. It was the one interesting thing about this thread. How deep into internet wiredness will we need to go to find out?
