I’ve built a few basses from parts, and for my last build built the body from a lump of wood ... it was fun. The next step would be making the neck too... watching that video makes me think I’ll stick to someone else doing the making from now on!

I know it’s An old post - but That looks awesome

I enjoyed those. I love his delivery if not his taste in what makes a beautiful instrument...

You know how you can use a rasp on a bit of wood and it goes really really slowly, and the rasp gets clogged fairly often... put apart from that it does what you want... well imagine one of them that works faster and doesn’t get clogged. Very quick and easy to use. homebase is a DIY and home improvement store, not a cabinet makers store, nor woodwork store or luthiers store and doesn’t tend to specialise in Japanese tools! Axminster is though

Or... this is actually an amazing tool to have and not expensive. I have used mine so much for so many things. https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/1723183863?iid=231942378788&chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=231942378788&targetid=878705634165&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9046327&poi=&campaignid=9437819219&mkgroupid=95525168813&rlsatarget=pla-878705634165&abcId=1139356&merchantid=7318514&gclid=CjwKCAjw1cX0BRBmEiwAy9tKHo2vq1gMVJutsw3mRAVnq9SynOIglKGjiAKCLUs2DtVmil3c33teShoC77QQAvD_BwE#ProductDetails

Sorry but you’ll get charged import duty too.” Hans: “I would love to sell you a pick guard, our made in China range cost €80 each, our made in Germany range costs €120 each, and our master built made in Germany range costs €240 each except for the tort which is €250. Postage on all of them is €32.”

I was looking at them and thinking that if they are any good the first batch is likely going to have the highest QC on them

RCF 745 I think from memory. That range of RCF cabs. QSC K12.2 also well liked by @Frank Blank (and obviously their higher end models)
-
If the speaker is full range and flat response it will be tuned to have a flat response over the full range... and be perfect for something like helix that models cabs. the problem you might have is a lot of the FRFR speakers out there are designed for guitarists and aren’t that full range and aren’t designed to handle to low end of a bass particularly well. The cabs recommended in the FRFR thread by the likes of @BigRedX and others will be what you want for a bass capable FRFR speaker

which one?

I think the pricing is odd there with the Sadowskys - like my will lee metro was originally in there priced at over £3k (no idea what the original purchaser paid)- but there’s a USA one there for £3.5k thing is unless you go in there for a Sadowsky I’m guessing most their customers don’t have that kind of money to drop on a bass - somewhere like bass direct a metro is kinda mid priced!
-
You just need to convince him to swap it for your sunburst one! https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/14121216484116-956332--sadowsky-metroline-rv5pj-59-burst-m10209

So an update 4 years on... We last left it with Warwick Streamer, a Warwick Thumb and a BB1200 Three through necks. The BB1200 I didn't get on with at all. Like it played nice but something about the sound I didn't like. Sounded nothing like a precision despite the way it looked either. So I sold that and bought Gareth's 1981/82 Slot polepiece G&L L1000. I used to live with a guy who had had a random music career in California, and played pro bass for a while, his advice to me was "basses are basses, but if you see a slot polepiece L1000 - buy it." So I did. It's great and reminded me how much I love bolt on instruments! Next to change was the Thumb. It was a dream bass for me from before I played bass. And I had finally owned one. And it sounded good... except for one thing. Back in 1985 when they made it cabs I think didn't have tweeters as commonly. So a modern sound could be made by boosting the high range. Both the active pickups AND the preamp were hyping the top end. Which is fine, and most the time you wouldn't notice it in a bass rig, or could attenuate it. Except I was playing at church with no backline, straight into a DI and IEM, and all we could hear in our ears was top end! It just didn't work well in that setting. I also had the problem that it was a clear number three in the pecking order. There was nothing that the Thumb could do that I couldn't get out of the ACG equipped Streamer... So I ended up trading it with Warwickhunt (again) for his Sadowsky Will Lee. I don't like Jazzes much remember... until this one. That Pink stingray type thing on the previous page got remade as this, USA Sub neck, a body I made myself and yeah. I think only the tuners and pickup from the original got used! Fun build and it was a very nice instrument. But... not as exceptional as the others So that got sold to fund something else... the Walkabout also got sold... To replace it I tracked down another of the Quantum 600 amps (took years to find one!) and built one of the BCCab speakers that Stevie had designed. I bought a HX stomp which does the tone into the effects loop of the Quantum or to the PA. Because of the Stomp being so flexible the ACG preamp in the Warwick also got sold and the original one went in... so after selling the walkabout, the black thing I made myself and the preamp, and buying the H&K I had a wee bit of money.... And found my first 5 string! Lakland 55-94. Still getting to grips with it.

If the cab is FRFR shouldnt you be able to run it with the global settings flat?

My first bass was a two pickup active shark 2. Played lovely... can’t remember it sounding amazing, very warm sounding and didn’t work with what I was playing either. Replaced with a Japanese precision which was a lot better. almost 15 years on I wonder what I would make of it if I played it now having played loads more basses

Like this one? https://thebassgallery.com/collections/all/products/status-shark-fretless-5-ex-pino-palladino my first bass was the active two pickup four string - but the second edition with the smaller scratchplate

I get the feeling that Jamie may be a lot more famous player than I realised... -

Ahh good to hear so of it’s history - explains the black in some of the dings too! the finish is amazing it looks beautiful, it makes me want to get my jazz refinished in a colour that isn’t metallic black. I didn’t really intend to buy it but it had sat in Facebook unbought for about 2-3 weeks, and was in the next village to where I work (I didn’t realise Jamie wasn’t) anyway we met in a pub so I could see it... first impression... whoah that looks good, second impression picking it up and playing - woah this feels so light and natural to play... third Impression - oh a b string I had forgotten it was a 5 string! the preamp settings are really really dependent on the sound of the whole instrument- some of them are awful -

Yeah, it's Jamies old one. Goodness knows it's been well played, and shame he had to sell it. What did you end up getting in the end? I'm still getting my head around 5 strings, but the nice thing is that even if I end up not getting on with them I can't ever blame the bass or have that whole "well if I had just had XXX or YYY" I made sound clips of me aiming for a Jazz, a P bass and a stingray sound from it in this thread. It can do a lot! -
Some point between 1992 (when I heard they had) to 1995 (when Wikipedia says they did) they moved the factory from Bavaria to Markneukirchen in former East Germany...

My fave tones: 1- Pino 2- Warwick Triumph 3- Moolon J-Classic 4- F Bass (though maybe not on this track) 5- Serek (whatever that is, the darkstared one) or the '66 Jazz Surprised me how much I didn't really love the second P bass at all! Most disliked the Mustang, the Matsumoku short scale and the Stingray- which as has been discussed and isn't the fault of the bass.
