  1. They are very nice dinked four strings (the ones I’ve seen)
  2. The reverse I think - @Phil Starrs idea of a PA amp would probably get more performance even at a lower price
  3. never used- but if it's just a power amp the Bassic A900 for £475 http://w.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Bassics.html My 2p - I'ld get a bass amp head that lets me bypass the preamp with the effects loop. That way if your VT preamp fails, or you just want another sound some point, you've got it.
  4. That said if I could only afford the B3n it would be super capable in most cases.
  5. Hx stomp is so much better. zoom quicker to set up (as focused on bass), simpler and more bass specific models. Esp solid state bass amps.
  6. This weeks findings on the HX stomp 1) dual cabs... you can choose which two cabs by changing the second cab! some odd sounds available there. Not sure when or why I would use that but it's cool. 2) You can assign the foot switches to turn on/off different blocks, simple.... just touch them to set it up. We all knew that - What I found is I can asign the switch to do one or more things in an block, so for instance the switch boosts the drive or treble of an amp, I figure you could set it to do a few things with one push too but not got that far in!
  7. I'm playing at the weekend and kinda want to play the jazz cos I love that bass. I also want to play the Lakland just because if I don't keep playing it I will just give in.
  8. I couldn’t understand why no one else went for it. It was pretty battered and needed some TLC but still
  9. Thought I would share my latest new bass day, it’s a bit late as I actually picked this up in late November ... but it’s taken me a while to get used to it... my first ever five string a Lakland 55-94 classic from 1999 I think in candy apple red you know when Facebook shows you adverts for basses and you see one that’s at a great price which get snapped up straight away... well then imagine it’s still there three weeks later, and in the next village from where you work... so you explain you probably aren’t interested but can you try it please... and it’s pretty well played and beat up, but it’s as light as a four string, and the neck is just a natural feel and effortless, even with that extra string ... ... and later that week the fella comes over and money is exchanged ... new strings and knobs come from Lakland in the US (hence newer style knobs) and I practice with it and gig it once so far. Mentally harder to play 5 compared to 4 ... but fun oh it can kinda sound like a jazz, or it can kinda sound like a musicman, or it’s own sound with both. The preamp is very very coloured, I need to test out the different mid options and the whole thing is kinda on the darker end of the spectrum... sounds a bit rubbish actually, till you hear it in the mix and it just *fits* perfectly so learning curvd having a fiver, but lots of fun!
  10. https://m.facebook.com/groups/669957523419623?ref=bookmarks jon Willis Facebook group and website is worth joining. His “flat” settings for the amps are great starting points
  11. One of The main benefits of removing the backline is it makes the FOH so much easier to get sounding good. A 40w combo in a bigger box isn’t really going to move air in any real sense. If you IEM aren’t giving you the haptic feedback you need something like the Tecamp pleasure board to stand on, or that company that make things that go on your back would give you the effect. If You start putting 40w combos in boxes to ‘move air’ then you’ll give the guitarists ideas
  12. not sure I like Chromes on my L1000... do I not like Chromes or not like flats?

Chromes are quite 'modern' as flats go, nice strings if that's what you want. I had some Chromes on my '71 Precision, and they started sounding pretty decent after a couple of years of constant gigging (and we're talking 1-2 gigs a week), in total I had the Chromes on that bass for around 5 years.
When I put a La Bella 760FL set on the same bass, they sounded as good if not better (with a slightly nicer tension IMO) out of the packet as the 5 year old Chromes, and they're ageing really nicely.

So yeah, it's all about La Bella IMO.

I use Chromes on one of my Precisions (EB Cobalts on the others). They can be quite harsh and 'boingy' at first but soon settle down.

  13. go cold turkey first and just use IEM. There is a wee learning curve for everyone setting levels and the difference in how it sounds etc. once you've got that then the aesthetics thing can be looked at...
  14. So I went on a bit of a mission with this headphones thing - as Christmas was coming up I asked for the Edifer HD850 for a present. My mother in law ordered off eBay but when I unwrapped them the plastic joint that connects the headphones to the head band had sheared off in transit. Money was refunded and given to me to sort myself out... (though the seller didn't want the broken phones back so they are still at my in-laws, I might try and superglue for something that kinda works but won't move much) So next on the list were the Superlux HD681, probably in the HD681F model that are a bit flatter. I'll be using them to set up HX stomp patches so close to flat as possible is useful. £20 in Thomann, but while I was there started looking at the AKG K240 studio that the Superlux seem to be influenced by and reading up on reviews ands the like and on the difference. A chance eBay search found a pair of old school AKG K240-DF headphones... slightly misslabled in the auction and finishing at an odd time, so I managed to win that auction for a tiny bit more than the Superlux are. I'll have to work out the whole 600ohm thing but should be interesting. (and if it doesn't work out I can always sell them for similar and buy the Superlux)
  15. there next thing youtube played me - also features some bass playing.... and lyrics that I'm not convinced export that well
  16. doesn't your stomp have a model of that? If you need more volume just add more of your powered speakers... Also if you want a massive bottom... you've got an ACG preamp on your ACG - you can do some nasty things with that boost knob on the neck filter Oh crap, I've broken the rules of basschat... yeah, your current gear is rubbish for that gig, sell it all and buy new stuff
  17. I get why folk want super lightweight basses- typically it’s going to be hung off you for the gig... ... but mega bucks on something slightly lighter than a barefaced, when all you need to do is move it at the start and end of the gig.... which 30 years ago your equivalent would be doing with a trace Elliot 4*10 and 1*15 ... ?
  18. Aguilar Th500 is $789 in guitar centre plus tax is $868 equivalent to £661 I don’t know what markups shops make on bass gear but I’m going to presume something like 20% = so wholesale price is somewhere around $630 or £480 in the uk - take that £480 add our 20% import duty= £576 add our shops 20% margin and then the VAT on the total and we get a retail price of £829 maybe our shops take a bigger margin of 25% because of higher costs and you get £868 which is what I would expect they are £699 in the high street music shops
  19. I’ve played that mouse - it’s amazing. And I dont even really know how to play fretless - but that thing is really fun to play
  20. Would that be linked to @Frank Blank getting a new ACG by any chance?
