  1. How much off is the simplexx size wise for what you need to do? The beauty in using a design someone’s already done is that you can build it and never need to think about port end correction, or baffle step or anything like that...
  2. What’s the mechanics behind it and being able to quantify it? I’ve read so many cab build design threads and never seen people discuss calculating it. Like the 2/3 of ‘dead weight’ plywood on the spinning Barefaced model I’ve always took as how they have engineered in using 9mm panels
  3. Approach 4 is to make it out of composite fibreglass and it will be rigid enough not to need much or any bracing...
  4. I think there seems to be a few different approaches I've seen to how bracing is used. Approach 1 is like Fearful cabs, where they use 12mm ply and then use the splines to stiffen individual panels. Which are then joined. Logic I think being that the panels themselves are braced and you're making up for the lost 3mm of thickness vs 15mm. It makes me think of an acoustic guitar top but less scallops... Approach 2 is like I think I've seen you recommend in the past where braces run from opposing panel to opposing panel. I've seen dowels used in that kinda thing before. Simplex, and Mesa use the corner ports as bracing too. Approach 3 is when you go a bit crazy, build some matrix structure, a shelf port too and can use 9mm ply. This should be an image of someones fearful build (found here: http://www.sumitdas.net/fEARful_build1/) This should be a simplex 210 (designed by bill) and found on a random site: Barefaced bracing
  5. I have a Zoom B3n I typically don't use much in the way of effects. But do use compression and the amp and cab sims. My only gripe about the B3n is how difficult I find it to set everything for unity gain in my patches. (Mind you I probably end up adding way more than I need to patches 'just in case' so it's not like it's a 3 block patch) (Why don't more of these boxes have some kind of visual signal monitoring like a digital desk?) Based on that kinda use... worth the extra you think?
  6. So erm my wife is my favourite person in the world, and she is generally ok with my “I’ve just spent our money on something from a guy on basschat, oh and I’m going to take half the weekend driving half the country to pick it up”... she’s great. however I explained to her what I was thinking of doing and she had a fairly strong reaction about liking this amp (see the title wasn’t a lie) and also pointing out that our house might not be big enough for my plan... so I need to think this one through - I’ll be asking a mod to lock this thread shortly for now...
  7. @Rick's Fine '52 would be the resident expert on a quick view on things like this I would have thought. Vintage Ferrule expert that he is!
  8. Maybe? I think the cab has been around basschat a bit @Oldman and @TPJ I think have owned it. I was supposed to be selling a combo to mark at old chapel in Leeds @mark_ir and he let me have a try of a whole pile of amps and cabs they have there, including a Mesa m-pulse 600 and two walkabout heads - I ended up giving him money and taking this home with the head I preferred the sound of.... I’m almost talking myself out of selling it here.
  9. @Warwick_Official still post in here? They should know
  10. SO one of those threads where I'm floating it out there to see if there's any interest in an item because I've got GAS for something else. To be honest I'm not 100% about selling this as I love the thing, but thought it's worth trying. So what is it? Only one of the most iconic bass amps from the last 20 years, small, compact but packing a punch of old school solid state tone, with it's big old valvey sound. It's a really early one. Go look at the threads on Talkbass and you'll find chat about the older ones being brighter sounding than the later ones. The early ones were also unofficially stable at 2 ohms. (But obviously if you need something that runs at 2 ohms, read up on it as it's officially 4 ohms min) Amp rated at 300w solid state watts at 4 ohms. I had a problem with it a year or so ago, and the power transformer melted. The original Mesa Czech made transformer was replaced with a official Mesa USA made part but Mesa's authorised tech in my part of the world. (not cheap) - but it means it was serviced within the last two years. Oh yeah, it's got a late 50's or early 60's Philips ECC83 in valve position 1. I got it and it sounded way nicer than the stock Mesa valve so it stayed in there. If anyone wants me too I can open it up and check what it is. And this one has a lovely green cab, with basket grill, and brown leather handle and corners. I can actually leave this in the front room and not get complaints cos it looks classy. Compact enough it will take up half the boot of a Mk7 Golf and fit under the parcel shelf. Price includes UK postage/delivery etc. If you're outside the UK delivery costs will vary obviously. Probably not feasible to post outwith the EU. Offers will be listened too; Trade offers... well I have plans for what I would replace this with but sometimes Basschat trade offers are where the exciting discoveries are found...
  11. I used to have one of them - lent it to someone and they lost it. I seem to remember one of the switches on mine had failed, I just replaced the switch and it worked
  12. If I wanted a tweeterless lightweight 15” I would see if that purple chilli one is still in the for sale section!
  13. this is the odd thing about it, I find I have to be very disciplined to make really nice simple patches that just do the things I want and ignore most of the other stuff on there! To the OP, just look for one secondhand and get it, it's good. If you don't love it you may find that one or two of the effects are worth keeping it for, or even the looper and drum machine or line in as a practice tool... or if you pick it up secondhand you can sell it for near what you paid for it. Just get one!
  14. Right ... so I read it wrong. I think I tried to trace it and got it and couldn’t work it out - the schematic makes it clearer - this is the input section... JH-PRE-INPUT-S.PDF
  15. I don’t have it on me at the moment but the simplified schematic doesn’t match what the actual schematic for the preamp seems to be saying... I’ll check it again tomorrow when I can dig it out
  16. That’s good to know , there’s videos about of Jonas talking about the input transformers ... I wondered if I were going mad. I ended up using it without the eq most the time, I have one of those plans that one day I will get round to where I DIY something similar
  17. +1 on that question RE the hellborg pre amp - while it is exceptional as far as I can tell it isn’t based on a Neve or API circuit but a high end pre stage based on a different preamp design based around the input stage IC . Also if I can read a schematic correctly the input stage transformer is bypassed when using a quarter inch jack lead in...,
  18. I always take GAS is a symptom for not being a focused, or worthwhile musician - that I’m getting distracted by so many trinkets.... however fun curiosity trying things cos it could be fun... ild encourage that!
  19. That’s really interesting given I’ve had GAS for a hellborg rig for years!
  20. The last post was a bit short becasuse at lunch... google tells me that there’s not a global wet/dry setting. Youre one of the guys on here that I listen to your reviews and opinions - so in my head you’ve got a fairly clear idea of what you like in your head - so I’m a bit loath to blether about the B3n beyond what I can say categorically! I’ve never used whammy or pitch blend, so I could go switch it on and play with it but I have no idea if it’s good or not! the question about tone flattening is a good one - maybe a little, more in that there seems to be a little compression and you loose a little something - in my head that’s probably something to do with the analogue-digital conversion? You’ve then got to play around with matching the gain of different patches and effects to make sure live it’s fairly consistent output level - why these kinda things don’t come with a PFL metering type system I don’t know. But it’s great for the money. I used to have a B3, and can’t remember why I sold it but missed having it about, and for the secondhand price of a B3n I don’t really think I lost out at all. I mostly use it for the amp sims into a PA.... would a spectracomp into a BDDI or similar get me where I wanted to be and sound better... possibly, but then I would miss out on having the ability to have some of the other stuff.... and try random stuff... lets look at it the other way... what else would I want the HX stomp to do to convince me to spend the extra ££? If the amp models are a step up in naturalness of feel... if the gain matching is way simpler, and I guess if I had a FRFR setup it could double as a electric guitar rig... it would also let you do your wet/dry blends, have a xlr out ... let me put it this way, the B3n is great... but I’m going to go try an HX stomp, and if I was a bit more flush I would be selling you my old B3n as the HX had replaced it!
  21. Cab sims on the B3n are based on ir I think, but you can’t load your own. B3 aren’t. Wet dry is per effect I think rather than per patch, I can’t promise all of them have them! I think you need to find a London basschatter to lend you one
  22. The B3n is a step up on the B3. Small in some ways but really noticeable when playing. Construction wise it’s fine too, not as metal based as the B3 but in practice I doubt you will brake it! I’ve not compared it to a Helix but would like to. Compared to a BDDI I guess it’s a digital effect with all the extra functionality and fannying about with gain staging and headroom that entails. For the money the B3n is very good
