  1. That’s crazy - like why the churn? Do you keep buying crap instruments. you know when they start sounding a bit dull you are allowed to change the strings rather than the whole bass!
  2. So I’m being asked what I want for Christmas and wondered what bass books would be good to help me sharpen my playing? The thread can be more general as it’s good to hear from folks of all abilities and music styles rather than focus on me specifically. So Whats the best books you would recommend, and why?
  3. If it’s a good enough price that you can move it on if it doesn’t work out, and if you can afford it, then just go for it!
  4. Q-tuners have a good rep but it’s still a mag pickup - I just think if he takes his ethos and uses piezos he’s making something that fits into his ethos as stated and also fits into a section of the bass buying public in the uk... Your friend would be competing against rob Allen and the other guys who make that kind of bass... (who in the uk) rather than every uk luthier who makes basses... it fits with the guys ethos, it would be a different product due to the woods used and I have a suspicion there would be a gap in the market ... otherwise my question would be why would I buy that bass over a Alpher/ACG/Overwater...?
  5. I love the L1000 - It’s utterly amazing and can do by far the best precision tone I’ve heard. It made me realise that as much as I loved thru neck active Warwick’s and the like a nice passive bolt on bass is a joy sometimes
  6. I would be looking at rob Allen type basses with piezoelectric elements and an acoustic type sound- but obv with his concepts applied
  7. Same reason people don’t like Chinese copies of bass pedals ... we have an culture of not liking when people rip off other people’s IP ... that’s why it keeps coming up. It’s a bit stupid really, it’s hardly like it’s warwicks only model and even looking at the streamer no one ever seems to says that they sound similar to Spectors at all
  8. So I wasn’t going to do this ‘cos, well since the little one came along I’ve not been playing much... so I had a lovely very nice JD Thumb bass, sounded amazing, massive bottom end, piano like tone, played lovely my dream bass since I started playing as a teenager... except after 4 years I still didn’t click with it... something about my playing style and right hand technique meant I couldn’t gell with it - and I tried. So the first basschat bass deal I ever did about ten years back was when I convinced @warwickhunt to sell me a streamer stage one ... we’ve bought sold and traded a few things from each other over the years and this time a conversation turned into a drive an exchange of cases... so the little one has been cutting back on my practice time, and normally the way I can tell I’ve not got the strength with my little finger on the left hand... I just picked up the bass and played something and wasn’t thinking but was using my out of practice left hand ... the neck just fits my hand and the bass just plays itself - bloomin amazing instrument need to get practicing now obligatory photo, new bass on left
  9. He needs to find you a black one next
  10. I think some manufacturers want you to keep buying more cabs of differing styles, mix them up with all sorts of phasing problems, at different points off axis, get frustrated read bass forums sell them and buy new ones - and then repeat every few years
  11. Mines in the lounge. It’s acoustic. My daughter likes me playing it. I figure she will realise I can’t actually play before her first birthday!
  12. They will be using a crossover inside the cab to split the frequency to different drivers. It will be designed to work together - so for example the mids won’t go to the bass driver and the bass won’t blow the mid driver up. If you match, say a 1x15 and a 1x8 they both will be getting the same signal
  13. You know it would be worse if someone with his attitude actually did learn to play... I’ve read the threads about being in bands with ‘that’ musician !
  14. 1) probably - this wouldn’t be a problem if you had a 1x12 and a 2x12 as each driver would probably be getting the same. 2)er I’ll leave that one for @Bill Fitzmaurice... 3) oh don’t worry, the Gas will come get you....
  15. You’re not being told that size doesn’t matter, you’re being told that there isn’t a link between size and frequency response.
  16. I often do ... and DI into the front of house - much better way of getting good sound! 😃
  17. I have some in ear monitors - I have no idea the size of the bass driver but it would be measurable in mm not inches... but it goes plenty low enough for what it’s designed for. The point is the whole “what it’s designed for” ...
  18. Go into a largish store and do blind tests of quality and sound without the price tags - I found the £250 Yamaha BB was equivalent in quality and sound to anything below £1k by other mainstream manufacturers.
  19. Yes and no. No - the body and neck are currently sat unloved next to my wood pile. It sounded great ... but the neck was rough enough I was never going to play it... and I don’t have the skills to make it nice to play. (If I had built the neck myself it would have been worth it. But the key sound was there so I kinda tried to rescue it ...
  20. Fat beams - as they age they stay playable for longer
  21. Hey - can you describe your practice setup please? Ive a similar problem, at the mo my “me time” is after the little one has gone to bed ... and firing up an amp would go down very badly with all involved.
  22. I’m serious about the danger of gas - not playing but having nice basses is ok if you can afford it - it’s crap if you spend more time talking about basses online than you do playing
