  1. As a solution getting timber that is dry enough in quantities enough for mass production a heat treatment makes sense. Back in the 60s when all these classic vintage instruments were from the wood would be left to air dry naturally for a longer time. I remember when I started playing Warwick made a selling point of their big sheds of air drying Woods they kept for years - stopped using that in their marketing when they stepped up the volume with the nu-metal Warwick boom
  2. I’ll throw it out there that when the tech was putting a new transformer in my walkabout he did all the tests on the power stage - my one generates over 400w into a 4ohm load in test conditions....
  3. Thermal is like roasted maple necks etc .... I guess helps make wood dryer like older wood would be. sonic treatment is the idea that the wood sounds better on old instruments because the music has changed the structure of the wood or something? That one I don’t really get.
  4. Ild be interested sticking one through a BFM jack and seeing how efficient that is
  5. just checked: the one that sold on here secondhand was slightly more expensive than what Mesas replacement walkabout transformer cost to be sent from the US and fitted by their authorised tech. i would have been better selling the WB for parts and then buying the handbox!
  6. I haven’t looked but given we started with a walkabout I doubt they are Mesa prices...
  7. Would you go for that one vs the all tube hand box you have been gratuitously showing off?
  8. Suggesting I hold onto it till my 7 month old has her own kids?
  9. Yes it’s a normal scale length, just 6 frets better than a fender! 😎
  10. I recently posted a bass for sale and think I ticked all the boxes you meantioned - the only thing I didn’t do is go in depth to cases and postage type stuff - mainly as I presumed (perhaps wrongly) that of course I’m going to package and post and insure a bass to someone if they are willing to pay me for it. The bass before this one I drove 50 miles to meet them in a service station ... maybe I should spell it out more? “I’m not a d***”
  11. More, or more efficient cabs with the walkabout I think would be the way to go. Not sure if there’s anything tonally similar out there.... i love mine - even if I’m tempted to replace it with my modelling pedal and a PA cab its hard to actually go through the mental process where I don’t have a walkabout....
  12. I know someone selling one of them I think.... They are a step or two above the Westfield bass @TheGreek meantioned. Also while they will all have more reach my thumb is a tiny bit under 9lb which is hardly heavy.... mind you ACG or Alpher could make a pretty good thumb sounding bass
  13. It’s taken me half a decade to come to the realisation it’s not working for me- it’s not the bass it’s me ! ( Thanks - I was trying out someone’s well played 1988 stingray and this was sat next to it - one looked old and one didn’t!
  14. Though if the bass player and the guitarist each bought a nice speaker it would cost similar to their amps, weigh less and be able to be use as practice at home and FOH at Gigs... Then IEM FTW.... Mind you a pet hate of mine is people who can't hear when different gain stages are pushed into distortion and while it's not as loud it hurts the ears more... just cos something is misadjusted.
  15. I’m actually miming, the keys player is triggering the bass loops, so who cares? Mind you I Still spent £6k on the perfect gear though (not including my pedalboard and IEM.) Helps me feel confident while playing.
  16. strap locks included oh and I need better scales but weight is a tiny but under 9lb - but I’ll check that
  17. For Sale or Trade 1985 Thumb Bass. This was/is my "Holy Grail" bass, and after years of wanting a Thumb managed to pick up a very early special one about five years ago. It's great... but after us having a wee baby I'm rationalising that it's not getting chosen for any gigs, I tried playing it exclusively for a few months and I just don't gell with it the way I do with two of my other basses. Anyway, that's enough about me - you'll came here for the bass didn't you? It's a pretty much all original 1985 JD Thumb bass, one of the first 150 ever made. This is the second revision with the classic body shape, with the early shorter horn. Back in the days when Warwick was all about small scale handbuilt production. Why only pretty much all original? Well the german session musician I bought it from I think I had had it refret - with period correct steel frets. It's got that thin, skinny neck common of this era. "Aha" shouts that guy on the internet "You've said it's a JD thumb, but it doesn't say it is on the truss rod cover" - well no, but back then they were all "JD thumbs" and the truss rod cover is quite special - it's made of Solid Mother of Pearl! According to an email conversation with HP Wilfer of Warwick this was quite an expensive feature and used in the early days to designate any "custom shop" models built to a particular spec. In this case the active SD active pickups and the brass saddles on a black bridge are slightly different to what you would expect. I asked and he couldn't remember who it would have been built for. You won't find many Warwicks with one of these truss rod covers. Jack Bruce had one on his 1985 fretless. Plays great, and has a nice low action all down the 26 frets, it sounds great with the classic thumb bass sound (piano like?) but comparing it to some later thumbs which had more of a middy compressed tone this is slightly more open sounding with a big fat bottom end. Apart from a small chip to the corner of the truss rod cover it's in great condition for a 33 year old bass, actually it would probably be in a pretty good condition for a 3 year old bass. Comes in a Bass Centre branded '90's Warwick gig bag in usable condition but with the cable pocket zip broken. If it needs to be posted could source hard case for it. Based in Leeds area, can post within UK or EU at cost. So that's it for sale... but I've also mentioned trades. I would listen to trade offers or part exchanges for this. Either a nice bass and money my way, or a straight swap for something interesting. Unless it's something I really want or could make use off please don't be offended if I say no. Basswise I seem to be gravitating towards more traditional bolt on P, J and Stingray type basses, probably 4 string, maybe 5, defiantly with frets, and I like my frets perpendicular to the neck. I don't mind beat up well played basses, in some ways prefer them. My GAS list is quite short a Fender Roscoe Beck, G&L L2000e, PreEB ray or something like the Sadowsky Metro Will Lee that just sold on here would be interesting. Get in touch if you've got something in mind.
  18. It’s almost as if there had been some kind of avoidable event where a third of the population had voted for something that meant the pound dropped in value...
  19. Neutrik silent jacks. Basically unplug your bass at the bass end of the cable without your amp going “thump” in a bad way
  20. One of the best basses I ever played was a honey blond HW1 jazz in a shop comparing it to loads of fenders and Sadowsky etc it was lovely
  21. The first generation Tecamp Pumas used Powersoft Digimod units in them - not as high tech as some of their other stuff but really brill - they had a different sound signature to the ice power powered amps, felt less brittle
