1. Update: over two months without an amp - it's been painful But it's fixed, primary winding on the transformer has gone, new replacement sent from the USA and fitted - price for transformer is not cheap - £250-300 ish But it works
2. I think the example of Roger Glover and Vigier I like. It feels like there's a relationship there that both benefit from, Roger gets the bass he wants, and helps a smaller company get a bit more publicity. I bet people have ordered Overwaters based on Scott from Scot's bass lessons using them on his online thingys - things like that that move sales from massive corps to smaller builders I like. I still wish I had bought the copy of Herbie flowers jazz that Wes Steed built - it was up for sale here a couple of times, most recently by @molan To be honest I have no idea who Herbie Flowers is, and typically don't get on with Jazz basses, but Wes built an amazing looking bass and.... GAS! This is why, even though we moan about it, they really should stick to Precison and Jazz basses... If you can't actually get hold of the video anymore... how unethical is it to share it with someone in your community.....
3. So while I completely agree with you and are tempted to go buy a good PA speaker I think it's worth pointing out that it has to be a specific set of speakers on the market that will go low enough and probably have DSP and some thing protecting the speakers excursion in the lows. If you read this thread and picked up any PA can it might not be designed to excel at the job you are asking it to do like the RCF you own are able too
4. Here's a question: When I was looking a few years back at using a PA speaker as a bass amp and cab there was only one downside at the time... In PA world the bottom end would normally be crossed over to a sub, so they weren't designed to have as much lows as a more specialist bass cab does. This matters very little if you've got PA support (actually a good thing) but meant that the way they were designed wasn't nesserally a direct like for like substitution for a bass cab.... Is this still the case with the RCF and QSC speakers you're talking about, and which ones, (I guess the bigger ones are fine.)
5. cheers for the first reply, and you could' help yourself with the second could you?! :)
6. Out of interest.... what modelling amp/pedal/preamps would you recommend? Both the mega buck end right down to cheapies....
7. if you need a stopgap while it's being made the Ciatlinbread SFT is worth a look....
8. by all means everyone go and spend on nice stuff... but I'm no longer convinced that for much of what we do as bass players, the technology that is commonly used is the best for the job.... and I think I've seen too many bands pink torpedo up their own sound cos they don't know what they are doing.... YMMV
9. I think it's crazy that folk will go drop £1k on a wonder cab to go with their £1k amp ... but then IEM or good wedges are too much... I almost went that way last time but if I ever change my amp again I think something like the setup the OP has is the way I will go.
10. Why not try it and find out? I mean like all engineering, maths and understanding how things work are optional extras aren't they?
11. 555 each my calculator tells me
12. Nice necks JVs - but seriously if you had a mint, big fender, small squier logo export one then that's probably worth a bit .... because there's not many of them and some folk collect rare stuff. later ones - nah not so bothered. modded later ones... not worth silly money. Mind you when I first joined this site the common thought was that you avoided 70s gender cos they were rubbish (except @wateroftyne who would say his '71 ones were the last good ones and they were sunburst so better anyway) now look at the price they make!!!
13. To maintain plausible denyability for her that must be obeyed?
14. I only just saw this but thought the same - the transformer on my one has blown so the spare could be useful. BUT the repair guy I took mine too today said if the amplifier board has gone mesa send the whole board, FETs heatsink and all rather than replace one or two parts. (if mine has gone as well and the tranny then It will probably be uneconomical for me to repair)
15. I've just taken my broken amp into the repair man to see if it's econmical to fix. if it's not I might end up going to something like this and a preamp instead. Fingers crossed its fixable though cos I don't have the money for a new rig at the moment!
16. Agree with this. I'm a graphic designer and while designing a poster in photoshop isn't something I would do - you can do it!
17. Every Fender Jazz bass I've owned, and I've tried a few... Sound brilliant Look even better Love the sound... Play in a band with them and I'm like, "argh where's that nice sound gone?" I want to love them, but can't
18.
8lb is very light for a 90's Streamer. Looks nice mind.
my 91 one is under 8lb. You know that cos you've played it! I think this one looks in far nicer nick thought!
19.
I still have it - sounds fantastic. To my knackered old ears the original pup has more bite than the SPB-1, which I have had in other basses, and a richer sweet spot so from my perspective I am glad you swapped it!
I found the SPB-1 could get me a great grindy type tone off the maple neck, live really nice. The original I think would sound better on record? Ach ignore me Paul has the bass now so trust his ears over mine. Hope you're still enjoying the bass? - I went for a while without a P type bass, tried a BB1200 and have a 1981 G&L L1000 for my P bass type tone. Amazing bass but miss having a fender P sometimes!
20. I had a really early JV which was all original other than the pickup had been switched for a Seymour SPB-1 or whatever they are called. Managed to pick up an original JV pup complete with the raised A pole pieces - it made the bass "all original" But.... I much preferred the Seymour pups and regretted swapping them, the JV were slightly more vintage sounding but the seymours were far far better sitting in a mix
21. 300 odd quid for a replacement tranny ... plus a tech to fit it .... ouch
22.
Looks superb!
Thanks - need to sort out why it sounds so mid sucky - maybe something wrong with the electrics or something. May also swap the pups around
23. Looks amazing - I hear good things about those old schechter pickups too
