300 odd quid for a replacement tranny ... plus a tech to fit it .... ouch
-
Looks superb!
Thanks - need to sort out why it sounds so mid sucky - maybe something wrong with the electrics or something. May also swap the pups around
-
Looks amazing - I hear good things about those old schechter pickups too
Just out of interest, how did you test it to come to the conclusion that the transformer is fooked? Frank.
I took the cover off and found the transformer was still hot three hours after I had turned it off ... and that the transformer seems to be leaking stuff
-
The transformer on my walkabout went pop this morning any idea where to get a replacement?
-
it's got an odd sound this one - a naturally scooped mid sound hmm
Good one. I assume the setting up was uneventful. On mine I had to open out a bridge hole for example.
other than the fact the finish had made all the holes and lips smaller it all worked first time - even the electronics! The only hitch was that I had moved the switches up a bit without realising that was my space for the battery box - it all fitted though sans the battery box ! Intonated well too which was my big fear. I even ended up playing it for two services at church and it did well - even if I did keep turning the eq knobs the right way. In the mix the p bass/L1000 sounds like you would expect, and the stingray sound sounds good too and is the most fun - it's got that clicky stingray top end thing going on. Oh and the sustain is crazy - this is me coming from through neck warwicks which aren't lacking. The combination of the super tight neck joint and the hefty block of brass retaining the strings?
-
So it sounds like new strings at the moment! It's got a lot of sustain and kinda neutral sound - the musicman preamp sounds great so with just the back pickup in parrallel it sounds well a bit like a stingray - move to the neck pickup and roll off the treble a bit and it's close to the precision L1000 type sound. Select the outer coils of each pickup and it's kinda jazz bass like, but not that like one if you get my meaning - nice sound. The roll off one of the pickups slightly setting works really nicely. Bridge series and neck single coil is another nice sound. But mainly it currently sounds like new strings

Taa daa!
Despite the set backs, I like the look of it. That second photo with a reflection in the back of the body of the stone building is impressive. (Wink) - Are you sure you didn't photo shop that?
pretty sure! Oh and it's finished!

It looks amazing - love the colour! Didn't the fella from U2 have a jazz that looked like that?

This looks amazing
Worth trying a spot of the original stain to take the whiteness out of the rub through (as it is a rub through, it should be absorbent to a certain extent), let it fully dry and then use a permanent sharpie (I use the staedtler permanent pens we used to use for overhead transparancies...nostalgia or what!) just to darken the edges and, if necessary, go over the top. This should lessen the possibility of a 'different shade of black' from the sharpie showing through.
original stain ain't working
-
Go on then... only the middle has been polished - but you can see the bits I've gone through on - it doesn't look as bad as it does in these photos
-
So a lot of sanding through the grades from 400 up to 2000 grit Good things - it looks pretty good Bad things - the laquer was a far bit thinner than I thought so I've rubbed through in quite a few places - bummer it's also worn the stain off - I think the solution is a Sharpie - good thing the edge is black eh? Almost like I knew this would happen! I need to polish and buff way more but then you will all get photos
I never visit fiends willingly. Heeheehee. Did you see anything special from the festival while you were there though?
no - literally was visiting friends and the festival happened to be on. Would have enjoyed the end of [international] festival fireworks on Monday night but that wouldn't have worked with work on Tuesday!
Car crash chic. Where did you find that specimen?
I think I typed worst bass guitar finish ever into google image search.
I'm sure Luke won't mind a little deviation! I agree with you, all that switching has had to be thought through. At least it can't be accused of being style over substance!!
deviate away. I went to Edinburgh this weekend so nothing's been done. Having been a resident for Edinburgh for many years I forgot the number one rule - avoid during august - actually that's unfair, if you are up for the festival it's amazing.... if you're up to do things like live or visit fiends having 5000 slowly meandering tourists between where you were and where you wanted to be is well annoying!

BF Gen 4 cabs - not anytime soon but a new BF Amp may be!
LukeFRC replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
I don't recommend using high pass filters with Barefaced Gen 3 cabs except in two particular circumstances - acoustic/double bassists using variable ones to help with feedback and bassist with very powerful rackmount power amps which run flat to subsonic frequencies (most decent power amps have switchable highpass filters built in). I can understand wanting one with 3012LF based cabs because of how that driver is. I wouldn't say I'm ignoring everyone because obviously we'd like this amp to be the ideal amp for lots of bassists but the concept is solely mine, I know what I want and I hope I know what a lot of you want (even though you might not realise it). As Henry Ford said "If I'd asked people what they wanted, they'd have said 'faster horses'" A while back we did a poll about amps over on facebook and the variety of opinions on feature sets (and the strength of opinion on them) was remarkable. Just EQ choices alone could have left everyone arguing for days... Not making an amp would be madness - I spend almost as much time helping our customers with amp buying decisions as I do with cabs but we don't get to sell any of the amps! And I wouldn't want to sell someone else's amp unless I thought it was perfect and was exactly the amp I'd design for me.
There's a lot of love on HPF on bass amps over in some bits of talkbass - and the micro thumpinator is well regarded here. I think it's a way of taking the rumble out when playing live without cutting all the bottom end. -
Love the patina
that's quality "roadworn" mojo there - some popular mass production factories charge more for that!

taa daaa!!! i joke of course
Can't wait to see the finished finish
me too!
-
That's my boy, that's my boy Hoisted by my own petard, then, I wait patiently with only a soft drumming of fingers on the table....
When I've done other refinished I've used paint that takes ages to dry - it's chestnut's melamine lacquer this time and I'm a bit out of kilter by how quickly it dries - I could be going way faster! I've now got a completely flat surface of lacquer! with a bare minimum of tiny shiny spots - there are about 4 spots where i went through the finish to the wood so doing a quick restain and then will give it a couple more layers before the final sand back and polish....! The good thing is that the burst to black means that going though the finish at the edges looks like it was almost planned!

Looking good
Any pics yet?
actually learning from you about not putting any 'finishing' pictures up when in progress. Sanding sealer on, tried to work out the grain filler but it didn't seem to work so don't think that was too successful. also managed to run through a couple of places - on the back thankfully. Couple of layers of laquer on now - waiting a bit then will flat down and do more layers...
