Thanks Luke, good to hear from you, been a while, hope you and yours are well?
It has - been busy with other things and not around bass forums as much as I used to. Stuff at work and lots of DIY type stuff on the house which is good. One of the upshots of the DIY stuff is the workshop is starting to have more tools in - eventually want to try building basses eventually so threads like this are pretty inspiring.

is it easier to play a string closer to you on an upright? or just copy a violin?
What an odd post. Hang on whilst I drop into every other manufacturer thread in the forum and recommend people go buy a Fender...
Hey people seem to be doing that more and more without you encouraging them!
No point turning anything into a Warwick/Spector bunfight because what you say is fact... other than value! A proper German made 80's - 90's Streamer will be cheaper than a comparable USA NS bass.
I think both of mine cost less than a comparable USA NS bass. Plus the screws and truss rod is metric. Did my head in for a while when I had a US built bass and all the rest were German or Japanese!
What Luke said!
I'm not sure what is familiar about it though. Mind you if I wanted a Ritter I hear this one is pretty good http://basschat.co.uk/topic/244941-ritter-cora-4-string/
I've been very pleased with them but have nothing to benchmark them against. I'm sure I won't be but, if the UE900s aren't a big step up from what I already find very acceptable, i'd be really disappointed.
when are you getting them? Tempted to wait till I hear your review!
I'm about to invest more int my IEM setup now that I know how well it works for me. I started super low budget (I was able to find a workable IEM setup for under £100 all in) as I didn't know if it would be for me or not. Well it definitely is for me and I really love all the benefits of being able to hear everything (we use tracks fairly often and it was a revelation using IEMs for this) and I really haven't struggled with feelin isolated. I'm probably going to pick up some UE900s and have them re shelled and stay on a wired system until I can afford a decent quality wireless setup. My under £100 setup was a pair of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/MEE-Audio-Universal-Isolating-Headphone/dp/B015S2I6A0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479726254&sr=8-1&keywords=mee+m6 One of these: https://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_powerplay_pm1.htm?glp=1&gclid=Cj0KEQiA08rBBRDUn4qproqwzYMBEiQAqpznswTwcQ1jOyOSgjbfoOIiS12dcRAe5VdTHKMwJDV5XegaAhJM8P8HAQ And a packet of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Comply-T-500-Isolation-Earphone-Tips/dp/B004HKIAIS/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1479726938&sr=8-13&keywords=comply+memory+foam+tips I'm under absolutely no illusion that this is anything other than a super budget way around it but I have found it a really useable setup and I've loved the clarity of sound and fact that my ears aren't getting any kind of bashing. I haven't found a wired system any more restricting than using a lead for my bass. We have a Behringer x-air 18 so I've been able to control my mix from a tablet. If anyone is thinking of giving IEMs a go this will certainly give you an idea of how it'll work for you without breaking the bank.
hmmm they are the budget IEM my friend the pro tech guy suggested as a cheap option - for what I do trying work out if worth dropping the cash on the ue900s ones

The perfect Jazz/MM tone in one instrument.is there such a bass.?
LukeFRC replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
With regards to MM tone - there is the fact that is MM Stingray is active and relies on the MM circuit. A MM pickup, even in the correct location, will not get you there alone. Couple this fact with a JB being passive, there's no way you can get a true MM and J in one using the same set of controls. We all know for example, that a filter system does not a Wal make. Similarly, the individual coil around each pole approach to pickups does not a Wal make. Even an aftermarket filter preamp and aftermarket pickup made in the aforementioned manner does not make a Wal!
What is quite interesting with the musicman preamp is it feeds the pickup straight in to the input stage and the volume is changing the gain of the output stage of the preamp. Most other active bass systems use a passive pot to do the volume then feed that into the preamp for buffering and eq etc.
Here's a scale drawing showing the relative positions of P, J and SR pickups. The lines shown represent the centreline through the pole pieces in each case.
Mine was to scale too, but that's pretty awesome
Here is said bass: http://basschat.co.u...ass-jmj-pickups Looks like the MM pup needs to go a tad closer to the bridge but it's pretty close:
I like that -
Its not though is it, are all your strings exactly 34" long nut to saddle? That's why they've gone from a fixed point backwards ie the 12th fret.
the image I made I used measurements from the nut. Got a ray you can measure centre of pickup to 12th fret so I can check? -
Thinking about it the saddle positions would alter with string gauge and tension so all but the Lakland might be right?
think it's a bad way to work it out! -

ok - so this is to scale based on measurements found online (i.e. if someone wants to lend me some basses I could make it better!) (click and it will get bigger) -

yeah and the fender line up with the bridge saddles and the others with the edge of the bridge. Kinda want to make a model. -

LukeFRC replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
As with most J/MM style basses the MM pickup is a lot closer to the bridge than the Stingray sweet spot. The MM pup simply doesn't have the heft and grunt of an SR in that position. Pic below for comparison.
fair enough! This is confusing me a bit - Might work something out.... -

Clover aperion with the Delano hybrid system? The hybrid system seems almost built to answer the question you're asking - I think it even switches passive for the jazz and switches in a 2 band eq for the ray sound -
I believe the best cost efficient option is getting a set of UE900s and getting them reshelled via Inearz - http://www.custom-in...r-monitors.html - that way you'll get a quad driver for around the £400. The other £500 you can then put towards some decent radio if you want to go that route.
Just dipping into this thread so forgive me if I've missed anything... My main "gig" at the moment is church, where we've no backline and a IEM system (all get to mix your own mix on a pad infant of you) for the past few years been making do with some Sony in-ear headphones - like £30 consumer level ones. They aren't bad. I caught myself looking at the "amps and cabs for sale" forum and realised that if anything would help me when I'm playing it's a better set of headphones/IEM - am I right in thinking that the UE900s is the budget version people would recommend to go for? Then reshell later as fund allow?

Taxpayers money and music education
LukeFRC replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
So, the government plans to plough £300 million of taxpayers money over the next four years on music schemes designed to give more kids and teen the opportunity to learn an instrument. When they're cutting back on so much else is this really a good use our dosh?. At my eldest daughter's secondary school they already offer music lessons across a broad range of instruments but take up rates aren't high, including for guitar and drum kit. I think what the government have failed to consider that music generally doesn't cut it with kids the way it used to. Gaming's where it's at. Give most kids £250 and chances are they'd rather buy an X Box or an iPhone than a budget guitar or bass. In their world these have more kudos than a plank of wood with strings etc What say you?
I was listening to a article about this on the Today programme on the way to work. I think what's happened is that the government has massively cut the arts and music lessons budget. Then decided to give a small amount of it back. So they've made a massive cut, but then announced a £300 million programme to part replace the bigger one that they just got rid of... politiks for you. as to the rest of this thread... <Rant> the idea we pay taxes to pay for the education of children has been established in the UK since the 19th century - it's a shame that our country has become so individualistic and selfish that you hear voices (even on here) suggesting we shouldn't do pay taxes for education. Bonkers. Add to that our government massively cutting the funding for education and moving focus away from the arts. 'Cos of course music, and drawing is all just a waste of our kids time when they should be learning to read, write, and add up - or something like that - except for the fact that as a country we're only really really world class at a few things.... banking and financial industries... and art, design and music. And half the country has just shot us in the foot so we won't be the world leader for the financial sector for much longer leaving us with the creative sector... which we're just cutting funding too... </rant> -

I'm in an amplification pickle. Help........
LukeFRC replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
Well I've got the other stuff to sell and I have cash as I just sold one of those basses that begin with R and sound like Kicken Backer. I have the chance of a thunderfunk 750a. Similar to Eden but 600w at 4 ohm in a single head and still I'd end up recycling the power amp, pre and cabs but maybe thats what I need to do to get me out of the hole I've dug myself into.
I was about to say - If you like the eden preamp ... get a thunderfunk. Honestly just go for it and get some different speakers for the cab and retune or something ... but get the Thunderfunk -
Yeah, that was my thought too. And I got a bass made just like that: Does it make a difference? Hard to say, as the pickup in this case is a tiny bit closer to the bridge than normal so it already sounds a bit different because of that,,, but I think so. What I did was move the EA coil to the other side, closer to the bridge. That gives the EA strings a less bassier tone, more defined, and I think it balances better. But it is not a Precision anymore, which is fine as that was not my goal, but there it is.
the Warwick streamer position
I've read a lot of things online about people saying P is the only bass that fits in the mix, that producers always tell them to use P's etc. but I see countless good/famous bands using J basses. Probably about equal with P's really and that's across all the genres I listen to. As an example, was just watching an episode of Jools Holland and the Killers were using a J.
killers first album, within 20 seconds of the first song you can tell they are a jazz bass using band .... if you want to play Motown use a p, if you want to play 70s funk use a jazz ... just use what sounds right to your ears for the music you're playing.
