The GB74/75 is on paper a great bass - so much so I went to try a few out a few years back... it was ok. played well enough in the hands - kinda bland tone, it didn't excite me. I figured by the time you had got decent new pups (Delano Hybrid?!) and preamp in it it wasn't so cheap any more. I would say that was just based on shop try outs. One bass that did blow me away in a shop, so much so I lost track of time playing it, was the Yamaha 424/5 - I just grabbed something off the wall to try an amp with and that was closest... and utterly amazing.

[/quote] I was reading a review of those T-basses over on the statii site... nothing remarkable in a review of what is a well regarded bass.... at the end it's got the pull out box showing the other things available at similar prices - typical stingray, a fender jazz and then a Wal 4 string for £1400.... even allowing for inflation Wals are more expensive secondhand now than they were new then!! Anyway I digress.... My Warwick Streamer Stage 1 i got it for a silly low price. And played it lots - didn't like the sound... stuck barts in, .. played it loads - went through a phase where I think I had it up for sale more than I didn't. Was still playing it a lot... I'm particularly grateful for Flanker for telling me I was daft and to keep it when I offered it to him in exchange for a Nash jazz bass. moved to leeds and had the boys and Alpher do an absolutely beasting fret job on it (they know what they are doing) and stuck ACG preamp in.... and it sounds and plays great now. And... I could spend hundreds on a bass, go the full custom route or whatever - but I don't think I could improve on my Streamer. It's well played and sounds great. (might try some different pups sometime)

well it belongs to a bass chatter if I remember rightly. interesting control cavity... I've a feeling that mr Letts is still working out how to solder... and I'm not sure the shielding does much with the big gaps in it...

So I spend a year and a bit trying bass rig stuff, swapping and changing and then score an awesome green tolex mesa walkabout which sounds amazing and is perfect for me.... then I look in the "for sale section" for parts for a bass I'm doing up... within hours I'm looking through the basses for sale to see what I can find. (tbh a bitsa isn't a cheap option) - oh but what if I sold this bass too - then I could afford that.... then I'm looking through the amps for sale... and then someone who had an amp I was trying to buy gets in contact and offers me it... and suddenly from having the amp I've been looking for, in a form factor that suits me I'm thinking of swapping and changing. Madness I tell you.

secondhand yamaha bb are the best bargains out there at the mo.

Wonder how many gigs you have to play a year before that income would be considered taxable - I guess you could just make sure your expenditure in strings and new basses was bigger every year so you never made a profit... anyway - good - I used to work for a internet business selling on ebay - and it was galling that you would get people selling the same thing as you for half the price as they wouldn't have to pay VAT, business tax, business rates or income tax and nat. insurance on their income. There's always going to be the story of the grandmother who sells 2 knitted hats a month and gets a unfair fine but there will be loads more seriously screwing the system. One way to find out is google street view the business address... we had a massive warehouse and a team of 12 people, and other companies in our marketplace would sell far more than us out of a small 2 bedroom semi detached house... hmmm

Other way you might not have thought of would be T40 wiring with the coil tap on the tone control, a 3 way switch for selection and phase switch
