1.
The answer, perhaps, is here..? If one frequents other sites, one expects to come across rubbish sometimes. Stay on the true path, eschew others and remain faithful to BC. Simple, really.
we're not as bad as certain american based forums but we're not far off sometimes! It's amazing what can come and go in fashion. Hartke can't be that bad can they, that Wooton fellow uses them and he does ok. They have the market problem that they aren't sexy and they are easy to get. Some more esoteric brand is always going to have a bit more kudos than the brand that every little shop has, and the aluminium cones.... we're fairly traditional at heart aren't we?* * not you big red x
  2.
Well that alone would make them unsuitable, would it not? And don't start talking about Xmas, for God's sake. It's only the end of September...
maybe, I was kinda hoping one of the resident experts would chime in!
  3.
I seem to remember one of the reasons was to do with cost... a PA cab suitable for electric bass (that is not used with a sub) needs to have a high xmax and not be rolled-off at around 60Hz like some mid-priced PA cabs are, and this tends to make them very expensive. Where's Bill Fitzmaurice? He'll know.
so that RCF model in the video has DSP protecting it against over excursion and is -3dB at 45Hz.... now doing my best to read Bill's charts for his Simplexx line (picked 'cos it's a bass reflex too) the 12 bass cab with a 2512 in it has a similar -3dB point. Most bass cabs don't publish the frequency range with any kind of reference points and it wouldn't surprise me if a fair few of them roll off WAY higher than that. What I was thinking was that the PA cab might not be expecting such an uncompressed transients - like I doubt the drivers have the high Xmas driverswe see in a lot of higher end modern bass cabs.....
  4.
Another possible problem is that PA cabs are generally made of moulded ABS or some other form of plastic... I'm not sure if it's the best material for an electric bass cab regarding resonance, etc.
I'm willing to bet that the average ABS PA cab will be better engineered than the average Bass cab (note the second average there ) properly done I don't see how it would be worse. if you look at this they take a RCF HD12a apart.... not that ABS stuff has a fair bit of bracing there.... also a cab I would love to try sticking electric bass through http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9AJrnGKnMY
  5. I asked a similar thing about using powered cabs, a lot of the problem is that the Bass guitar range goes into territory that you would normally cross over into subs - and that the speakers aren't designed to reproduce the transients of bass guitar like a bass rig would. So a lot of the time I've been advised not to pursue... If you go elsewhere in dark corners of this and other forums you will find other people who use PA gear with no problem.... what is the "right amp" anyway?
  6.
I should add that as an electronic engineer of 62 years, no valve will find its way into my pre amp or power amp.
what do you use out of interest?

    Multi effects.

Zoom B3 is pretty ace. easy to use, sounds great, and the amp and cab models are good too - check out the mega threads on TB about it
  8. I'm wondering what's going to happen when you notice that someone stuck all the tuners on the same side of your headstock - not really balanced that is it?
  9. two different materials to make magnets with - neo is lighter and can be stronger than ceramic. Ceramic is heavier and what has been traditionally used. power and cooling etc is more down to the driver design than the type of magnet used.
  10. my parents live in chelmsford and at some time in the next few months I'll be driving down to see them.... if that helps at all
  11. I don't know exactly what you mean by "boost the tonal qualities" - the large sweeping bass control from 50Hz to 4kHz - do you mean a suitable bandpass at a set gain? or a low pass filter to take to top off? (like a passive tone knob) if it were me I would use the bass passive and then make or buy a floor mounted preamp to run first in your signal chain - I would probably make a clone of the stingray preamp, mainly as I've been wanting to make one for a while - the sadowsky preamp box is supposed to be pretty good too, something like that.
  12. he's on this site I think - what you thinking of making??
  13. why not use the carvin vertically too - may help with sound dispersion
  14. anyone want to win an F bass? (It's blue Warwickhunt so you won't like it) iBass mag seem to be running a competition - (i've no connection to them)
  15.
Attention people! Be advised that BassChatting amp bloke Mr Foxen performs his magic on old Carlsboros and other under-appreciated golden oldies. PM him for info.
his fb page is worth liking and viewing too
  16.
I know mine is! http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2526969
how annoying is the two box lugging?
  17.
You need to buy this... http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2558697
what I was thinking - they are supposed to be awesome aren't they?
  18.
What about this? ;0)
anyone else's backs hurting looking at that?
  19. Not sure it's a marketing ploy, its fairly clever technology going on. Effectively they are saying that the peak at the front of a note is important so you get a 500w or 700w or whatever peak, and then they blend a compressed feed in with your dry signal - which makes the whole thing sound louder. My guess would be live that the sound in the audience or to the desk would be quote good/ok, but for the player I personally need to hear the high transients of the notes in order to lock in with the drummer, I've played other setups where I've heard a very compressed foldback sound with no amp sound and I struggled
  20.
I'm just home from two gigs tonight using the AER amp two and F&%* me - how do they do this? I understand that there's a bit of processing going on in the amp but the tone and volume is astonishing. The amp two is a 12" + 4" speaker combo. It is deep and clear, with more highs than I really like, but rolled off the tone on the jazz and it seemed to sound more pleasant to me. It handled the larger venue on the secend gig amazingly well for the size of this little beast. I need a few more gigs in different venues to give a better considered and more experienced opinion of this combo. So far it's amazing. The only drawback for me at the moment is the weight. Frank.
hmmm added to GAS list!
  21.
I've recently test driven the Amp 2 & 3. Holy Bjesus the thee is astonishingly loud and arse kickingly deep. I wound up the bass boost and thought the bugger was going to have my leg off. Two was amazing but three......... its tiny. It has some kind of German noise tardis inside with an 8X10 2KW Mesa rig inside. I truly cannot express how punchy, warm and musical it sounded. Blown away.
can you expand a wee bit more in what you made of them both?
