I completely agree. I had a play with the amp eq at the last practice and it was probably the first time I've touched it in months. The point is I was touching it because I couldn't quickly access the tonal variety on the bass. I know it sounds ridiculous given how much variety the preamp offers, but I emphasise the word quickly! As I've already said, there's no doubting it's an incredibly powerful pre, but... I don't particularly enjoy driving high performance sports cars for more than an hour or two, but it doesn't mean they aren't incredible machines that some folks would give their back teeth for one.
what were you eq-ing the amp for? your sound or to fit in the room?
As far as I'm aware, most of the current crop of class-D's use the same ICEPower module. Marketing nonsense does the rest. EBS seem to be acting more sensibly with the Reidmar, rating it at an honest 250w. I'm happy to be educated otherwise, though.
the old series of Tecamp puma used a powersoft Digimod unit - nice unit it was too- not sure how much of that was the preamp or power amp though.

how long does it take to tune one string?
There are some people out there using the same power amp section that's in the Genz 900 but only rating it at 500w
you had alluded to this a while back but not mentioned names! I don't get this - surely power output is a given measurable thing - it's either 500w or it's not! You don't get this sort of thing as much in the PA amp world it seems (unless you're behringer)
Passive and use the tone controls on your amp.
the cheap option - just turn the current preamp off! If it were me I would probably either go passive like BRX says or maybe get a version of a U retro.... but I guess it also depends what amp you're using.
Just an update, had to cancel the trip over to Newcastle and now buying online is looking quite probable so I'll be after a bass with more reliable QC. From what I've heard this means I should steer clear of MIM Fenders. The current top contenders are the Schecter Model T and Ibanez ATK800 Premium I think. Also, still interested in hearing about that Jaguar neck pup in series. I've heard only great things about MIJ Fenders. Any more opinions on the basses mentioned above or any other ideas? I'm thinking I can be more flexible on the thin neck thing. I've not really had any major problems with the Jazz. I'll keep you up to date and post pics once I've got whatever I go for.
buying online... this is in your price reach http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/OW_Tangle_Asp_elite_Fless_1.html
Well the Prodigy at 250W is louder than my 900W Genz class D heads. I'm glad I'm not facing a Strategy re-valve though. That's an easy £300!
is that pushing them both to the max without significant breakup?
I was just looking for a rough idea of what the difference would likely be
measure the internal dimensions to get the volume and then plug all the info into WinISD to see what you get. With a new baffle and prosily new/modified ports it'll be a fair bit of work. Out of interest what are Flyte cabs made of to be so light?
Have you seen this new Ampeg combo? http://www.ampeg.com...assamp/ba-210/# It's designed to work with a very shallow tilt so it can be a standalone floor monitor - even looks like a PA style monitor when tilted with the amp controls down the side If you click the left or right wedge images you can see what I mean No idea on price yet but I am reliably informed that they are on their way across the Atlantic right now. . .
so... I don't think I would have ever considered that.... but... I may go find one to try when they come out.
To the three musketeers, My comments were not meant as a criticism just advice. I hope I did not upset anyone. I have found it a good idea to keep an open mind when it comes to design and i am learning a lot from what you guys are doing. Much of what I have learnt is from guys like Bill, Alex and Duke, and much of that seemed counterintuitive at the time. Bill on particular continues to push the boundaries on enclosure design. Keep up the good work.
well you just named it - 3 musketeers 112
28 Replies and the Preamp is still available... It is a really nice Preamp but it is a really .... Price too...
but probably the cheapest secondhand hellborg preamp out there! If anyone wants to send me lower offers I'm trying to work out what I'm doing with my rig this week or so so you might get a really nice preamp at a considerably nicer price... (oh and in Hull tomorrow, Derby way friday, York Sat/sun)
My PA guy says no In his opinion the core sound of a PA cab won't sound that nice with a bass running straight into it. He said you could use a sub cab to get some of the core fundamentals but the decent ones start to get pretty expensive, at which point you might as well buy a bass specific combo. He's been selling PA gear professionally for many years and also works with a couple of quality bass amplification brands as well. I would definitely trust his judgement on stuff. I think his summary was that if it worked really well to buy a powered PA cab as a bass monitor then loads of people would be doing it
fair enough - plan B then - or plan C......
My requirement is for a lightweight cab suitable for dub reggae, so I do not need much treble or upper midrange. I currently use a small cab loaded with an Eminence 3015LF, which sounds good but it doesn't go as low as the new ACME 15" cab. It would sound better in a larger box, but I don't want to do that. Stevie suggested replacing the driver with a 3012LF, which would be better suited to the smaller box dimensions and sound deeper than the 3015LF. Would anyone else here care to comment on this idea, before I take the plunge? Specifically, what differences in tone and volume should I expect and is it a worthwhile modification, considering the work and cost? Apologies for the derailment.
ACME 15"? typo I would think? Question - and not being fecicious - why not buy an ACME?
I have actually used a pair of PA speakers to gig with once and they sounded greatp. To be fair they were Trace Elliot cabs (from the short period when Trace went into PA) and each one had a 15" and a 10" mounted concentrically so there was quite a lot air moving Are you planning on using a PA cab for front of house or just as a stage monitor with the main PA running FoH? We have a local PA guru who also knows a lot about bass gear so I've asked his opinion for you
most gigs I've ever played have been via the pa, and one of the places I play we all have our own in ears so while a nice preamp helps I'm not sure I need to spend loads on a poweramp/head and cab. Strikes me a powered pa speaker with a response -3dB at 40-50hz or so will have a good enough low end response , have dsp built in and be designed to be flatter through the freq range and be able to use for other things other than bass
Rock Factory in Castleford has a lot of used stuff. Worth a look . Andy

There's often a lot on eBay. Biggest problem with so much used PA gear is that it's often trashed by the time it's sold. Not as many sound engineers with major PA GAS compared to bass players - they jus use stuff until it breaks
thanks guys! Yeah I've realised that Barrie! I'm half tempted to replace most my current rig with a active PA speaker. Smaller, lighter, DSP equipped and compared to the cost of new bass stuff not stupid priced. (btw as someone who works in a specialist bass shop and has had a LOT of gear... any thoughts on my idea/plan)
Hi everyone! The plan for this has changed slightly.... It's not just the bass that is going on tour! It's us!! The two of us will be planning a trip (in a camper van) around the UK visting jam nights. gigs, guitar shops, even visiting you personally if you like!! This way you get to try more instruments and chat with us personally whilst having a brew or a beer! The dates and destinations still need to be worked out but we're really looking forward to it!! See you all soon! Cheers Chris
living near I need to come visit you when you're about! Got strings in at the moment? For everyone else - Alpher strings.... really really nice - fairly low tension round core, just a nice balanced tone - and having had them sat on my bass for ages they last too Replaced my previous faves of DR Fatbeams.
