1.
As Bill F. said you can make a good or bad amp (with a good or bad power supply) of any class. Designing good class-D amps is more difficult but can be done, the other side of this is that because it's "easy" to do "high-power" class-D amps with SMPS (small, light) lots of manufacturers cut corners and make bad ones with insufficient energy storage or power reserve, and this applies just as much to bass amps (maybe more) as PA power amps. But some do it properly -- if you want *really* loud punchy bass but think class D amps can't deliver it, you could try connecting one of these up to your pre-amp and cabinet(s)... ;-) http://www.pknc.com/3phase_eng.html
15,000w watts into 4 ohms.... I think if you tried that you would get punchy sound..... one punch and your speaker cabs would disintegrate!
 2. I would look secondhand. I have a old Yamaha BB1000 and a old Warwick SS1 which I picked up over the last few years - both of them were in the same price range as these instruments you've listed here and would be considered (rightly or wrongly) to be "better" than the brands you've suggested. Both were very very good deals I was lucky to find - but they are out there. I guess I would also ask what is it about a neck through that you're after?
 3. I found this in our back bedroom today, it really needs to go. If anyone's interested feel free to make lower offers - I can only say no!
 4.
As ever, Bill, I am impressed at your generosity. And your patience.
+1 bill is a legend
 5.
Purely hypothetically, if port area were too small for the power levels being used then a relative loss of bass as volume increases is exactly what you'd expect. Port compression should start to kick in as airflow resistance increases, before onset of more obviously objectionable chuffing. This is something we have talked about a lot and would like to address empirically with the prototype. Simulations and anecdotal reports on air speed suggest that with long throw woofers, port size is usually inadequate and this is as much or more of a limiting factor than xmax.
which is what I found with my old "less than adequately engineered" cab - not only did it seem to be tuned daftly high but what bass there was would drop out when you turned up leaving lots and lots of slightly grating mids.
 6.
Damn, so good I said it twice.... I'm down to my Acme B1, the Berg IP112ER, and the Berg CN112. Not too bad, really...
you should keep thinning them down!
 7.
Yeah yeah yeah...... try the ACME.... yadda yadda yadda. The ONLY time you will ever have an obscure piece of bass kit (possibly the only one in the UK) within a 10 minute drive in this area and it has been months since you said you were going to! 8. mind you neither did we back then
 9. interesting thread from the PA side. Looks a nice driver - I found a pre-fearful greenboy and bill fitzmaurice talking about that 12n630 over on talkbass, but they don't seem to have thomann in the us!
 10.
I can give you a list of the 12" drivers that are in our possession and that we may be trying out: Beyma SM212 Ciare 12.00NdW Celestion TF1225 Celestion TN1230 DAS Audio P12 Eminence Beta 12 Eminence DeltaLF Eminence Kappalite 3012LF. It's not a list of recommended drivers though. When we look more closely at these it will become apparent which ones are suitable and which are not - and why. This should help you choose your own drivers in the future. We can't test every potential driver out there - so our list of recommendations will necessarily be limited to what we can get our hands on. However, there are a couple of drivers that we would like to test but which we cannot really justify going out and buying. These are the Celestion BL12-200X and the Faital Pro PR300. If anyone has one of these and wouldn't mind lending it to us when we reach the measuring/testing phase, that would be great.
argh you've got me looking at fancy speaker specs again. Some of the BMS drivers look nice (though at the high end of the budget)
 11. I prefer to be on the snare side of the kit. You can see the snare and both feet that way. For right handed drummers that is the left hand side of stage (looking at band). Visually my bass will move the eye inward and down too.... towards the centre of the stage
 12. "The 2 cabs are the non-tweeter versions." - but I can seed tweeter level control and what looks like a tweeter behind the grill?
 13.
I've had a couple of Ashdown Superflys (Super and Superduper), and the EQ section is very impressive but utterly wasted on me. I then had a couple of EA iAmps (500 and 800) and didn't use the EQ on that to anything like its potential (fortunately the base tone was pretty much as I wanted it). Now I've got a Puma and I can cope with the EQ on that. However, I can see someone who has different tonal requirements to me finding a more detailed EQ very useful. Shame Ashdown discontinued the Superfly, although the power amp section was somewhat compromised, that preamp was nice.
I used a superfly when they first came out- they were provided as the back line at a industry gig we were doing. anyway the surprise of seeing an amp that small (this is before micro amps were popular) and the hammering of the eq buttons to try and make it fit are what I remember. that and putting my hand on it at the end and burning myself. Ashdown are a good example of trying about 2 new things every year in the lightweight market.
 14. lower that side of the pickup a smidge. and DR fat beams are good, but pricey
 15. I'm going to say... can this thread be pinned please mods?
 16. It's unlikely (I would have thought) that there is a problem with the cabs - the gain knob on the amp is designed to set the input volume into the eq and then the main volume knob controls the power amp level to the speakers. There are a few things that could be happening here. try a new lead- the lead is an active part of passive bass to amp - if it's damaged it might not show up with an active bass. do you have a pad of some kind on the preamp modual? turn the gain up. is it EQed differently? does selecting different pickups change it? it may be you're used to hearing a certain amount of mids which are scooped out on your bass. and how high are the pickups- raise them will give you less bass and more mids, as well as more signal... which might sort you out.
 17.
I can vouch for this combo as I bought it new a few years ago, traded it along with 9B ext cab when I wanted an all valve head & ended up trading valve head for my old PJB combo Funny how things go ... Anyway I sprayed it cream btw & think it looks great. I only sold it coz I needed the money (wedding costs etc) & was no longer in a band. I did keep the 9B cab tho ... Kev was great to deal with so buy with confidence & like he said you can remove the head & use with any cabs right down to 2 ohms (720w I believe) ... awesome amp that PJB still make & great customer service
it looks awesome that colour too! I keep coming back and looking at it.
 18.
Heh, got it in the spree of trying new things last year. The CN112 sounds better to me than the HD112 and pairs well with the Bergie IP112ER. At home, I wasn't enamoured of the CN112, but in the band context it was awesome with the SL 900. My GAS is spent, at least until I've tried out a fearless F112....lol I still can't quite part with my Acme B1 either. To many gigs on it over the last 4 years or so. The CN112 is what I needed though, same weight as the B1 but slightly bigger and definitely louder. I can only say a CN212 must be pretty amazing. I've played the Vanderkley 2 x 112MNT stack with my SL900, it sounded absolutely gorgeous. I was a bit 'meh' on a single 112MNT, but I never got it out to playing out live/with a band - at that point I preferred the Acme B2. On the whole, 2 12" drivers I think sound better than 1. But an Acme Fullrange 12", Baer ML112, Fearful 12/6/1, or fearless F112 cab could potentially prove me wrong. I tried the Barefaced BB2, really great cab, but in the end I liked the Berg IP112ER's voicing just a smidge better. I'm hoping for no more GAS this year. But last year was really educational.
sounds fun year - a bit like me at the moment - but I don't have the $$ to actually buy loads of things - bit harder trying to work out what to get (and how much to justify spending)
 19.
I used my CN112 with my Streamliner 900 tonight
is this another new cab you've got?
 20. it won't make as much as you want for it, and is worth more to you that it will get. Keep it, or wait 6 months then decide to sell.
 21.
31.5cm or just under 12 & 1/2 inches (without the front and back panel!)
ah ok not deep enough for me :v( cheers
