Is the amp or the cab most important when you want a good sound?
LukeFRC replied to gjones's topic in Amps and Cabs
it depends what you're going for tonally. If you want the sound of a sealed cab, well you need a sealed cab. If you want valve power section... well you're going to need to have a valve power section. if you want hi-fi like full range reproduction, well a power amp into a full range speaker would be where you put your money. So it all depends! -
I have a roland D-bass 210 at the moment it's great, and in terms of technology a lot more high end than the genz benz combo, the cube combos aren't as powerful I think but have a fair few bells and whistles on them - like muzz says really really good gear- for some odd reason very unfashionable. I like my D-bass combo a lot, that said I do plan to be selling it in a few weeks so what do I know!

How much do warwicks make now? SS1 in Yorkshire
Awesome stuff, figured out those pickup switches?
Nope! Just set them in ways that sound good. No idea what they are actually doing. Theres one that is the equivalent of rolling off the tone on a passive bass.....the other two - no idea! -
do either of the cabs have two sockets? if they are wired in parallel then just plug the second cab into the first as well?
The one in my avatar is a 2005 SS1. According to Warwick it's swamp ash.
it's maple, it's a nice bit of flamed maple, warwick told you wrong. If you don't believe me google what they both look like (corvette $$ tend to be swamp ash) -
That's a good price. Its probably swamp ash. To my knowledge Warwick don't use maple.
err the Streamer stage one has been pretty much all maple since about 1989 before then it was maple with wenge neck, and before that wenge neck and cherry wings. -
(how are you getting on with your thumb?? )
used it the first time on monday practice... honestly it's the bass sound I hear in my head, flipping amazing! -
Depends on what it is really. Unfortunately, that image gives very few clues! All maple construction.....that's about it! Think you can just about see it doesn't have a brass nut so its probably a 00's bass, possibly recessed straplocks so would say 2000-2002. On that basis, I would say anywhere between £1k and £1.2k depending on it's condition, which does look good. Worth watching if you are local!
the price of them seems to yo yo about all over the place! I thought it was about that much now. I'm not going for it- honestly the wife would kill me! -
Why do I find myself thinking the OP should try out a G&L Tribute L2000 (if he's wanting a Swiss Army knife, to cover all the bases, for not a lot of money)?
because you are a highly intelligent man with a lot of experience of musical instruments?

How much do warwick's make at the moment? This came up on my normal ebay browsing Odd one this... one photo, local pickup only, pretty crappy advert really - might be a good deal there for someone, my wife would kill me if I accidentally won another auction for local pickup! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/warwick-streamer-stage-1-neck-thru-bass-/261376101418?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cdb3acc2a -
Natural aptitude for playing the bass......
LukeFRC replied to Absolute Beginner's topic in General Discussion
Yes, but not really You need some motor and co-ordination skills which some people have and some rant as good at. and you need to be able to listen and hear well - which some can do and some can't as well but that's where you start - and everything can be overcome with practice and just playing with other people and learning - and you'll still have your strengths and weaknesses. -
I'm asking because I was looking at an Ampeg SVT VR which has 2 channels. I was told that each channel was 150 watts, but to get 300 watts like a CL you'd need to bi-amp it. Is this true, and how would it be done?
bi-amp or bridge?

will angled baffles really make much difference? like if you have a horn/tweeter there then making sure it goes vertically up enough should be enough? Or alternatively to me it makes sense from a form and engineering POV to do something like green boy did with his range and make it tiltable.

odd thing that however good or not a system it is by patenting it it mean it falls into obscurity
Design the best cab for metal \m/ Seriously though, fair play for taking this on and sharing it. It's gonna be an interesting watch. One suggestion I'd make would be having the 1x12 switchable between 8 and 4 ohms. Obviously the more components added will increase the overall cost but perhaps the final plans could have this as an option.
how? by having a dummy load in there?
Yes mate but as someone mentioned it's gotta be flat to be able to support an amp on top, that's why I thought of a box with one straight, one facing about 40 degrees up but in a straight box.
.... or something else to support the amp...
Alright you got me going lol Just a little drawing of what I had in mind. Please pardon my French - I am no design specialist and those are my first attempts with paint. The yellow would represent a grill http://www.mediafire...9kz3rla3xgej35m - one 12 with additional routing of the sound to point the player. http://www.mediafire...47i1q1ejv21bd3t - two x12' or 10' where one points at the player. The front grill goes up the top to let's say half way I don't know if any of that is actually realistic and possible to build but I would love to have better reference on stage without having 4 cabs. How the heck do you post images here?
Would something similar to EAD's 112 design work?
Controversial - please don't use the BF style textured paint.
it's plans to build yourself - you could finish it in leopard print fur or piano black high gloss if you wanted!
