My pet hate.... more a gumtree sort of thing... Me: advert up with item up, not massive amount of info... price, say £500 ono MrZ: Hi is the item still available. Me: Yes it is (a short polite thing about it) MrZ: whats your best price? straight in there, not trying to talk me down based on condition, not even that interested... just "what's your best price" Normally I just say "advert states I've looking for £500". It really annoys me - like if someone came and said "oh I'll give you £200 for it" then I can decide yes or no- but "best price mate" it's

do you need the plate at all?
...doh! Oh yeah! By the time it's rewired and fettled it'll owe me £300 ish
Depends how it sounds doesn't it? If it hits that Jazz bass spot then you're in for a winner I'm developing this theory that Precision or Jazz style bass is such a basic design that it's essentially the quality of the neck and pickups, possibly the body and then the skill of whoever bolts it together and sets it up that differentiates a good one from a bad one. Get it working for you right and it will outplay basses 3-4 times the value.
did I get a major bargain even if it does need a bit of time and a little cash to get it sweet again?
possibly - but I don't think I know how much it cost ya!

ahhh, I used to have the body of a box standard so that's where I would have seen it! http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/vox-white-shadow-879564/
I had the long term loan of a 98 USA Standard and wasn't that impressed - I guess the old Qc issues have always been apparent. My newly acquired JV0 Squier leaves it for dust. Frankly, so did my old Silver Series Squier P.
you'd be hard pressed to find many precisions that it don't I think!

Looking at the secondhand market £1000-1200 will get you almost anything you want if you look hard enough
I had a one piece birdseye maple neck on a EBMM sterling from 1994, and it was the worst neck for shifting, even mild tempreture changes would make it change neck relief. It had gotten much less rigid compared to when it was first cut. Id be heavily surprised if anyCarbon fibre or graphite neck was even half as bad. Even if made right, wood is just inconsistent that's that. If you do carbon fiber of graphite right, it's right there are no inconsistencies. By contrast I had a stingray from 93 with similar neck (rosewood board) and that was stiff and rigid as you'd expect.
birdseye maple is by definition not the best wood for making necks out of. I've no idea why EBMM do it so much
A lot of people who think they know about instruments often hear with their eyes. I've had a lot of compliments about a 90's MIJ Squier P that I own that I've taken abroad with me to gig for fear of taking one of my more expensive instruments, even though I value its sound just the same.
it's quite odd the questions about your instrument you'll get asked after playing. In response to the OP - the fender bass is a relatively simple design. Sound wise as long as you've half decent pups and bolt it together competently there's not much more mojo added by having it bolted together by some fender employees

I got a new bass in the post - I came in a nice box - with all sorts of foam support inside and paper packing it out. The bass was a warwick thumb so dunno if it would fit a fender size bass but for smaller basses or guitars it's fine. Free to whoever wants it. I'll even make you a cuppa if you need it

Is the link to the pre or post watershed version of the vid?
Is this as bad...etc? Yes it is. It's a shame that music is so polarised in the US these days. KW is a mega star in Hip Hop and his intended audience is Black America, so it's no surprise that we wouldn't like it.
I would be interested to know how the US rap mags have taken his latest album.... My take - I don't mind it. His latest album is experimental, and pushing the genre musically - if it works or not- in some cases yes, in some no. But then 808s and heartbreaks got a mixed reception.. The genre's got to evolve and someone like Kanye doing different things... aint bad. Anyway Lou Reed's view of Kanye's latest ... http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/jul/03/lou-reed-kanye-west-yeezus

pickups sound different depending how high/low they are - do it by ear.

Warwick Hellborg Pre £700 in original box

mind you - I used to do PA for a fella who had some fancy tailor acoustic - it had a stereo jack to XLR cable with it and apparently would give me a balanced output.... that sucked! My cheap behrinher DI box sounded much better.
-
so you're basically after a bass that has something like a line 6 pod built in? then use a balanced line out for PA? (and power it off the phantom power I guess?) ... or mounting an active DI box inside your bass?

Kiev's new acquisition. Need possible refinish ideas!
LukeFRC replied to ChickenKiev's topic in Gear Gallery
I hope I'm not being rude here... I just looked up the price of Ibanez ATK300 secondhand.... could you not buy a sunburst one as well for the price of refinishing the one you have?
