So just found out.... our church is moving into a new building, well and old one, an old church that's since been done up. It's quite a nice modernisation with a big glass wall down the back so their is a room that can be used as a cafe and other things while the main bit doesn't need to be opened up/heated etc So a big stone room with a glass wall at one end. Thankfully carpeted. And we're going to play worship music in there - for those not knowing what that sounds like think your U2, coldplay, snow patrol type indie rock type sounds- musically most of it is pretty awful but the main thing is it's fairly loud and not organs.... right you with me? so we're going with no stage noise at all. Drummer in a box, no idea how electric guitar is going to be amped (pod probably) there's a system going in where each of us will be able to set ourselves our own monitor mix, all quite hi tec.... which leads to my question... I'm going to have a jack socket to plug in a pair of phones in for my monitor mix. Now in an ideal world I would buy some state of the art moulded IEM's - or I just could use any pair of iPod style headphones.... or anything in between. At the moment the only headphones I have is a set of Koss Porta-pros. what would anyone suggest?

so what? honestly, and I'm being serious and not wanting to be rude, but so what if you can't do something? You'll never be victor wooton/jaco pastorious/mark king or whoever - you may never have a cd in HMV. But then I probably won't either and nor will 90% of this forum. Maybe if you practice you'll be able to make those stretches, maybe not and your fingers never will work that way - but you WILL improve as a musician. Django Reinhart changed the way people played guitar and he didn't have half his fingers- maybe physically you'll never be able to do x y and z on the bass. But that doesn't stop you. Enjoy your new bass.

[/quote] the bass with the switches is a 1985 thumb bass.... so no passive mode - the active jazz pickups from seymore duncan have 3 switches on each pickup, one is the resonance of the pickup, one of the others is an eq curve... but I don't know which is which and there is also a 3rd that I don't have a clue what it's supposed to be doing!

I agree for some sounds like we were discussing in your other thread the amp and cab add a lot to the sounds, but for others... when I was gigging more I lost count of the number of times the PA would take the bass DI before the amp- you chat about what it should sound like if you need but otherwise I've tended to just trust the PA guy's professionalism.

The current preamp I used for the first time live today is based on a console channel strip - which is great - sounds good - but... you're not going to be noticed in the mix any more or less are you. Want be be noticed in the mix pick a mid freq and boost it.....

Bass amps are a funny thing. I'm in the process of changing my rig around, and been spending a lot of time trying to work out what it is exactly that I'm after. Anyway I tend to go for a fairly clean tone. It struck me while playing today that live and in the mix the differences between different rigs isn't that massive and that if you've got PA support then half of the things that you look for in a bass rig are redundant and there's a different set of priorities. anyway just my thoughts - I took the very nice helborg preamp today into the effects return of the roland combo - honestly it sounds nicer - in the mix.... I dunno if I could tell. .... makes me think...

Would I pay a small fee to try out a bass? no- put this way, it's my money in my pocket they want me to spend- and if they want me to spend it with them they'll let me try things. I do have a policy of not trying anything unless a) I'm actually looking to buy or the shop offer to let me have a go first.

I would suggest that ashdown heads aren't awful - make sure the pre shape button is out (i.e. off) to get rid of the muddiness. I don't like ashdown cabs at all.

it depends what you're going for tonally. If you want the sound of a sealed cab, well you need a sealed cab. If you want valve power section... well you're going to need to have a valve power section. if you want hi-fi like full range reproduction, well a power amp into a full range speaker would be where you put your money. So it all depends!

I have a roland D-bass 210 at the moment it's great, and in terms of technology a lot more high end than the genz benz combo, the cube combos aren't as powerful I think but have a fair few bells and whistles on them - like muzz says really really good gear- for some odd reason very unfashionable. I like my D-bass combo a lot, that said I do plan to be selling it in a few weeks so what do I know!

I'm so lucky to have been born in the 80's!

Theres one that is the equivalent of rolling off the tone on a passive bass.....the other two - no idea!

do either of the cabs have two sockets? if they are wired in parallel then just plug the second cab into the first as well?
