1.
Sorry to be pedantic but doesn't it also depend largely on the quality of the player - I remember someone on here saying they'd seen one of the top pros play someone's starter level bass and made it sound good. OP that's a great looking bass - nice score.
well yes. You won't find me disagreeing with that!
2. contact them through their management first... then if that doesn't get anywhere name and shame. also you got a spare cab?
3. Your options seem to jump from bog standard Leo fender designed mass produced bass right up to a custom made by one of the top makers. Either your heart is set on the fodera - in which case go get it, or there's a whole raft of custom made, or high end loveliness in-between a Standard US Fender and a Fodera. Actually looking at the price of Fender's now you can get a UK made custom for less...
Great resource. Thanks - I'll definitely use that a lot. "Total import duty & taxes due: £738.70" - scandalous amount isn't it.
You'll pay taxes and duty on the whole price including the postage cost... not sure if you added that in.
4.
Irrespective of what they sound like they weight 40KG so why it would even get a mentioned in a thread related to specialist lightweight gear is a mystery to me.
cos Wayne is built like a tank and likes to strip down to his vest top.... and flex....
5. My Warwick SS1. I had it for years and didn't get on with it. Every time I thought of selling it I couldn't get away from it's niceness to play. Sounded like a machine gun though. So swapped the pups to barts, stuck a few different preamps in there ending up on the ACG-EQ01. So now it sounded good - then took it to Alpher guars to get the frets sorted and set up... what a job and suddenly my bass sounds great and is a joy to play
6.
Hi Luke. I'm on the look out for something at the moment and heard good things about these. It's a bit more than my funds will allow right now but trying to shift a couple of things so hopefully will be in touch if it's still around. Not planning to sell the Takamine though!
Glad to hear the taki is still getting played what are you trying to shift?
7. someone I know has a board with preamp/DI and any effects and then then all in ears. Not a bad idea really.
8.
I believe what I say sometimes,too. I'll never learn....
The thing that snapped me out of it was when you were raving about the RH450.... I went and tried one....!
9.
It's not, though - I often hear descriptions of amps by people who haven't played 'em, without them actually acknowledging the fact.
I just take whatever you say as gospel though!
10.
Just got to try out the CN112 with my Streamliner 900. Awesome. Extremely clear sound, can dial up plenty of bass or cut the mids to get a similar apparent bass boost. It sounds great. Apparently more bass is yet to come after it breaks in a bit more (according to Talkbass users). I can see what JTUK is talking about when he says there's a kind of 'dryness' in the mids (?upper mids? - can't remember the thread but remember him saying it). Really noticed it with an ash/maple bass. Easy to EQ out if desired with the Streamliner. Looks well made, super light. A definite standalone solution for small gigs and rehearsals. I'm going to try hooking it up to the IP112ER tomorrow and see if I can knock down a wall! Pete
You are getting through new gear as quickly as me this month Funkle!
11.
This is something that really concerns me about suppliers. There is no excuse for ignoring a customer's emails. None whatsoever. No matter how busy you claim to be. I own a group of companies and our customer service is crystal clear. Tell customers what you will do for them - and then do it. If something happens. Tell them. If you are taking someone's money and if you do not live up to what you said you would do, you should at least explain the situation. Extremely unprofessional. Buyers beware!
I get what you are saying but disagree with your conclusion. I work for a company which started last year as two folk in a bedroom and then managed to do very well and we've been swept off our feet with orders, more staff were taken on - but each time we do the additional staff help increase orders again. We're now up to 12 hour days and the owners work 7 days a week trying to keep up. It's only been in the last week or two where they brought someone in to do the customer service side - before they couldn't afford to. I don't think its unprofessional, just unfortunate to find demand outstrip supply to such a degree you can't keep up with the emails.
12. It's possibly cos a lot of us are british and have an inbuilt aversion to that kind of pretension!
13. Did you get this from Luke R-V F? Looks great!
14. do it and see - it's clever but not that complex!
15.
Yes, I AM excited. That's why I am still so passionate about music and musical equipment after all these years. When have you ever heard an artist or a sculptor raving about the magic of their brushes and chisels? It's all in the mind mate.
as an sometime artist, and sculptor... and having hung around with other artists and sculptors.... don't be stupid - of course we do! I lost my best brush, had it stolen I think when I took it into a school by accident. not been able to afford to replace it, it was quite upsetting. LukeFRC MA; BA(Hons) Sculpture. I'm lucky enough to have had a number of basses. Some are very well built instruments, some less well built but Some you find are a bit special, or magical your word, and you give them to other people to try and they go oooo too. I've found that in very very expensive instruments and also the bitsa I put together based on a squire MIJ silver series jazz.
16. are you being serious? Most those variables i'm sure could be designed into a cab whatever the porting situation, apart from "How does the same driver react in sealed and ported cabs?" everything else is like asking "which is better precisions or jazz basses"...
17. I had (till recently) a Puma 1000 (the powersoft version) and was thinking of a BB2 - asked Alex and he said it would go perfectly.
18. I had the same DR fat beams on my P bass for about 2-3 years - sounded great. Then one day they really did die. Go buy some new ones, (oh and round core ones, status, DR etc IME last longer)
19. why buy then sell so quickly? the mind boggles
20. So a few days after reading this first I've come back to this thread.... something kinda bothered me - the singer is trying to communicate something - obviously doesn't have the technically knowledge to articulate what she means (and to be fair it's in one email not face to face convo) But the thread just ends up mocking her - in this weird kinda defensive leave the bass player alone, I know best type thing.... which is a bit rude to her, and... well I don't think that's how the best bands work... I play with folk and for instance can come up with different drum ideas, things that will make the song better, or maybe make more space for something the keys or guitar is doing. Right ask me to communicate that, how rhythm works or a kit works... I couldn't do that and would sound like an idiot. - but I would kinda like to be listened too, and have the drummer translate my random beat box/dance into drummer speak. I would listen to band members making suggestions about bass too regardless of their ability to communicate those ideas. That communication and sharing ideas is, to my mind, the difference between a great band and a bunch of guys making music in a room together. So to the OP - you're probably a better bass player than you think you are, loosen up a bit. But listen to the rest of your band - are you clicking in with first the drums and second the guitars. Unless you are the chill pepers or someone you probably need to talk, in a calm and normal way about how you can improve that, maybe different stage positions would help you hear/see the drummer better, maybe you guitarist needs to bring his stage volume down a bit, maybe you need to tighten up your timing - I dunno - talk about it - improve as a unit. Your individual playing is probably great- but is your sound for the band? you know what sounds good to you might not work in the mix, that the eq setting on your bass would be the first thing I would look at... change things and see what your band members prefer - you know what sounds best to you on your instrument might not sound great as a whole band - compromise a bit. Cutting the bass on the electric guitar amp might help you.... and so on. Your singer has a set of ears on her - she can help you.
21. If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends! etc etc...
