The top model in the BB range, as introduced in '77. At that time Yamaha also produced the SB range. The BB was its competitor to the Fender Precision, and the SB to the Fender Jazz. Original BB models have quite chunky necks, with a 43.5mm nut. Neck constructed of maple and mahogany, with an ebony touchboard. Wings were constructed of alder. With an original Nippon Gakki branded hardcase and tool kit and accessories you'll pay between £550 and £650. Knock off £100 if there's no tool kit and accessories. Knock off another £50 if there's no original case.
you're a good salesman!
What colour is it? Just out of curiosity.
natural wood colour - it looks lovely I got confused to begin with as it doesn't have the model number on the headstock - then found out the really early one's don't.
http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1c3742a792 Not sure how old this one is, but could it be a good price, even with postage and duty..? There is a date on that repair bill, but I can't read it.
22/7/13 (but written in american)
If the price is right I'd rip his arm off. I've been looking for an early BB for years.
It's a good price, original case and everything.... aargh... but don't really want to start trying to have less basses and guitars around and end up with more.... feel free to ask me where it is if you're interested - he's a nice guy
Actually I have just found that my bass was a pukka 62 RI (with stack-knobs AND a J retro inc) but it was from 91... then again I sold it for £600 after not getting any interest on Basschat @ £675!
ouch.
The vintage guitar price guide calls for 1700 to 2400 bucks for a 62 jazz from 82 from 84, and 1200 to 1900 from 86 to 99. I guess there are always transition periods and it is difficult to attribute an instrument to a specific class and differentiate it from the following one.. But this to me is also an evidence that the Fullerton American vintage are actually priced for a higher value recognized by the market. It seems actually like for some people (both owners and "lurkers") this is totally not justified by a superior quality, while for others this is absolutely reflected by the sound, feel and playability. This is the most confusing thing for me now. Not sure if this is a sort of fever for vintage-no-matter-what, but as long as it is the market price and we are close to what it is valued for by the market I wouldn't have many problems (a part for spending the money ). Big problem is if I'm paying much more than what their "right value" is... I can always do this if I think that the instrument is special, but I believe this will anyway be a bad investment. Thanks Luca
2400 dollars is about £1500 so the guide is saying £1000-1500, which is about what they sell for I think, if not a bit less (values change, exchange rates move etc) don't get me wrong, the Fullerton Reissues from 82-85, along with the early 82-83 JV reissues all tend to be exceptional guitars and probably worth extra over the late 80's (or even the late 70's maybe). But £2000 is a lot - for that you could get.... a first edition jv, a tokai jazz sound and early Yamaha BB... all great early 80's intstruments with great reputation. Mind you i've just realised that they are all japanese!

what's the craic with the toneprint stuff? to me it seems like a good idea, but a bit gimmicky... but I dunno do folk would ever use it? like- why? surely somethingl ike a bass Pod would be more user friendly if you want all that stuff?
There was also a custom shop and to me this was better. I know Fullerton are somewhat special, I'm as well not sure if they are worth that money or what should be a "correct" value. Thanks Luca
It depends what you want it for.... like there's no reason to spend £2k on a Fullerton when you can buy pretty much any bass you want at the moment secondhand for £1k or so. But Fullerton prices have started going up recently.... (this is my 30 year vintage rule I think I do find it funny I meantioned my offhand comment that fenders start going up in price after 30 years once... and so far have seen other folk quote the 30 year rule in other threads. I've started a very very very small meme! any way back on topic) but if it's a "vintage fender" investment type thing maybe it's worth it? also 85 seems late for "fullerton" or one of the last?
Some short vids documenting varies parts of the build progress. This may not be the best way in the world to build basses but it is the way I worked it out.
you've got the video set as private!!
So, I find it hard to believe that the majority of people who order a custom bass have any idea what they want, other than some pretty bookmatched bullshit.
I do wonder why this thread continued beyond that point! I read the whole of the "won the wal pickup on ebay" thread over on the other side - it was fairly clear from the bat that the fella wouldn't get the thing done anytime - to make production yes would take a while but to knock out a wal like pup... well I was trying to work out if I would be able to do it myself (or at least learn too.. and while it would take a while it would be possible - where you would get stuck would be getting the pickup to interface with a preamp! -
Internet feedback, is there any point? Rant...

OT... I think the thing I found odd about the thread we're talking about wasn't "this has just happened with X, Y and Z" but more general leading to everyone to go on a massive guessing game. Like you could be the best builder in the world, and you have a bad day, or something breaks, or your mum goes into hospital, or you slip with a chisel or anything... or, and more likely - some of us are utter ******s when it comes to being a customer that a relationship sours or something - and that get's bandied about the internet - but nobody hears about the 1000 happy customers - and when those customers do try and defend the builder it all becomes a bit odd. -
That's lovely, looks more SG like in a lot of ways. In fact probably prettier.
one of my best friends has a degree or two in music tech, worked in the LA studio scene for a few years at some big studios.... and he kept thinking it was a copy of a Gibson SG. ... it's not really it's Yamaha's version of a les paul that happens to look more like a pretty version of a SG
I agree in principle about the wood but there are some manufacturers out there like Chris Celinder, who get remarkably consistent results from passive wooden instruments. I don't think the pickups or preamp have much effect on the sound of a bass at all outside of very coarse adjustments. I've tested the outer limits with at least two pickup suppliers and preamp manufacturers and am pretty confident I know what can be achieved. Re: jigs, I'm talking about expectation management not build process.
which explains why people pay the money they do for Celinders.... I would argue that there are a fair few builders around who don't have that level of luthiery to build towards a tone/or sound pallet. It's how I understand custom instruments to end up with a sound that you really don't understand how on earth they would work in a mix! -
But why do people always mention the 'poor technique' thing....its quite derogatory. It sounds like people are saying 'my cab isn't coloured thus I'm a better player'.
because if you learn to play in a certain style and then play through a full range bass cab - or through a PA then any deficiencies in your playing, in timing, and the attack you give the strings, and how you move your hands over the fretboard will become a lot clearer than through a more coloured cab.... the counter argument would ask how much that matters in a live mix.... I had a similar thing with my warwick. I went from playing P bass through a warm valvey head into a warm middy cab to playing my warwick into a trace elliot combo at church... apart from sounding like we were back in the 80's the active pickups, the Eq and the bass had such a bright tone and fast attack it sounded like a machine gun... but that quickness of attack really showed up the timing issues.
