1.
Could you not have made this clear in the first place? I've posted the advert three times and gotten this message as well as uploaded a bunch of images.
under the title there is the "rules and guidelines for the marketplace" every time you look at one of the sales forums it's pinned in as one of the top posts "rules and guidelines for the marketplace" if that's too unclear 50% of the respondents to this thread have a link in their sigs.... really is it asking too much of people to read instructions or rules?
2. I've got one and think it's great - it really fits with my streamer stage one and I've been so happy with the tone and sound of it. I love the real richness it has. I can understand though why, as Jazzyvee says, it's not for every bass - and sometimes the directness of the sound of a bass with a regular preamp or passive is what you need.
3.
Looks nice, the TC + the Ampeg ! Risking repeating myself... I am very very doubtful about the actual power (or load handling to be precise) of the present Class D amplifiers. My only experience with this concept has been in my HiFi stereo system, where I had a 2x200 Watt poweramp at one point. That one damn near burned down at a New Year's party, driving a pair of power hungry speakers. The episode mentioned above goes years back, and I am sure that alot has happened on the Class D front since then... I am currently looking at the amp market, and very tempted to go for the Glockenklang Blue soul head. But the Class D thing does scare me off a bit... Particularly that most of the heads seemingly won't drive anything below 4 ohm (officially). This indicates to me, that even though they look powerful on paper, there could be some real world 'Ooomph' lacking somewhere. The weight of the things does appeal to me though .
Check out Bass Gear Magazine, they do reasonably thorough tests on things including power and burst power of amps. They looked at the Blue soul. Look at a few amp reviews also to put one into context. It's quite funny where you've got the review that sometimes is quite careful about not insulting the maker (and normally advertiser's) product and then a test where they pull it to bits and show you the inside. If I recall it might have been them that found that the TC RH450 wasn't putting out anywhere near 450w
4. No, apparently unrelated.... http://gaskellguitars.com/downloads/77-woods.html
5. It's not actually Ash, it's a japanese wood called Sen. The "ash" got added in translation. I had another bass, a japanese Cimar from 1975, also made of Sen - it was amazing too.
6. so if you had your bass amp and plugged it into the mains AC power, in the short time before youyou were electrocuted to death and your amp blew up burning your house down you would hear the frequency of the power... which in the uk is 50Hz if you went to the states the voltage would half and the frequency would be 60Hz. You would still die horribly, with your amp exploding and burning your house down though so don't try it.
7.
Yeah i know....a coil around a magnet etc and i end up with a voltage at my jackplug socket....so my bass is a voltage generator. i know its an AC voltage millivolts but can go to to volts. but.....does a low voltage give the low notes and the higher voltage the higher tones or is it more a function of current? If i had an AC voltage generator and plugged it into my amp I should get a bass tone....knowing me an electric shock!....and would the wood around my voltage generator...no, I'm not going there! Just asking.
the voltage is the volume. a note is a frequency, your guitar string makes an acoustic you can hear by vibrating at that frequency. it vibrates over the pickup inducing an AC current in it... the way the AC alternates matches those frequencies....
8. I think you need to see if there's a TK Maxx near Bass Direct*.... *other high end bass emporiums are available.
9. So I've a power amp I want to stick in a case... only problem is that it's slightly larger than normal 45cm deep. Which is a bit of a pain as everything seems to be shorter than that. What do folk recommend for a rack case for it as it's that deep? Or should I just build something from some bits of wood? It's 2 unit high. I think I'm going to get a sepeate shallow bag or something for the preamp to allow me to take it to places where I don't need the amp and my cab.
10. yes! I'll have it!
11. PMed with possible linkage...
12. some silver series stuff was PAF , the most dreadful construction material known to man - oh it sounds fine on the bass, just don't try and strip it for a refinish....
13.
I've heard that particular bass is... not bad. I'm in London though, so...
denied by the length of the M1 !
14.
I've not owned or played a Yamaha bass
really? come have a shot on my bb1200
15. "So.....that's me and I am looking for you guys to tell me whether Yamaha basses are the world's best kept secret. " well they were up to 9:52 when you started this thread
16. if by cut through you mean a middy tone - then Eq is your friend. if you cut through you mean "be heard" got over to your guitarists and tell each of them to cut the bass on their amps....
17. Well I disagree that all class D stuff is the same - we covered that earlier in the thread- comparing the inside of say your Vivid amp or a modern tecamp puma with a powersoft power amp and you would see the massive difference! I think what it is is that a lot of companies are using the same modules two or 3 to build the power amp and supply section of their amps. I'ld also say that there are quite a few companies giving a "full range pure" sound to their amps - Glockenklang probably being the biggest, the review of their Blue Soul head in Bass Gear Magazine showed a ridiculously flat response.
18.
Regarding that much-vaunted OOMPH: I had an Ashdown rig with mahoosive toroidal mains transformer and traditional solid-state power section. Every note came with a free OOMPH, but it wasn't until I got my first Class D / Neodymium setup that I realised that OOMPH had been denying me the subtlety, growl, and sweetness that I should have been getting.
I would suspect that it had more to do going from a mahoosive ashdown rig to the Genz Benz/TC with barefaced cabs than with the power supply!
19.
I believe Vivid Amps does (vividamps.com) Their approach is to make an amp that doesn't color your tone or signal at all, and reproduce the full range. The new VB1500 was designed using lots of comments from this forum but ultimately around their approach that bass players will use their bass or an outboard eq in many cases to get their "sound". So they try not to do anything to that. Fuchs has a new Bass Bruiser Jr. which has a valve pre and Class D power section. Also knows what they are doing. Getting power without weight, cutting down on some of the heat, but keeping the warmth and life of tubes (fuchsaudiotechnology.com) Check out both if you want to see what they are doing with Class D. I will agree though, lots of new Class D stuff out there. The Peavey one with the chicken head knobs is a good little amp and has some nice retro touch with the knobs. I saw a bunch of stuff at NAMM this year, everyone pretty equal. Nice stuff by Tecamp, Phil Jones added a new one, and even Fender had some decent additions.
isn't that just a power amp with a few extra knobs then? I think you've hit something in that last para - "everyone pretty equal" - it's all the same few class D modules with 101 different manufacturers putting them in their own boxes with their own power amps - looking at photos of the newer tecamp stuff it's gone back a few steps compared to the earlier powersoft pumas in terms of what's under the hood... not saying they don't sound nice but....
20. a dome with reflective walls.... oh dear. I had similar practicing problems in a room in the arches of a church roof, everything that wasn't stone or wood floor was glass! Personally if it's just for practicing I would go one cab that you can tilt back to point at you. More than one source the more random reflections will go everywhere...
21. aren't they less than that secondhand now?
22. I'm all for cheap stuff - but cheap metal parts are the worst - I would rather have the worst bits of plywood in the world - a neck that splintered and frets in the wrong places than the internal anguish and frustration that stripped screw heads cause me.
23. given how long that must have taken and my estimated cost of that... how do the guys at alpher manage to afford to eat?
24.
The EBS rig is serving me fine as such, but I would like some more options with placement (rehearsal room issues), and also see if I could get a hold of an actual two channel amp (t switch between fretted/fretless playing.
technically what are the issues in the rehearsal room and how would having more options with placement make them better? and... you've got a micro bass 11 in your sig - with that having 2 channels, and your amp having another one- you've already kinda got 3 channels... Also- I can understand EBS and Glock being in the same territory amp wise - but TC is very very different.....
