2. it sounds great and looks like you enjoy playing it. If the sound isn't quite right then you can slightly tweek it with the string choice and to lesser extnt pickup height
3.
Contrary to what's been said here, Fender were putting out some of their best basses around '83. In 1982 there was a management buyout and production was scaled right back in an effort to improve quality. Weight could still be an issue, but generally speaking the the fit and finish was as good as they ever achieved. That said, as someone mentioned earlier, every instrument should be treated as an individual case.
what he said. mind you they are starting to sell for silly money - so if you can get it, afford it and it's below the market price.... having two basses won't kill you!
4. worth pointing out to folk who don't know but this is less relevant if playing an active bass...
5.
My favourite double bass shop seems to work on the principle that "If sir has to ask the price then sir can not afford it". It's actually a great shop with great staff but their idea of a budget instrument starts at £5,500, better quality runs up to £25,000 and for top quality you negotiate! The same is true of their bows, over £ 7,000 you ask the price. Puts electric basses in perspective doesn't it? Steve
my point exactly! Ok... so my tuppence... I'm tired of this inverted snobbery going on that comes up every few weeks- yes I get it, everyone could have bought that mythical squier* that is just as good as the multi thousand pound bass, and ooh look it's not so perfect, and woooah yeah I mean that squier could do everything it could do, what a waste of money.... etc etc etc So yes some things are made to work as musicians tools, and at various price points. And some things are cheap cos of less quality, or cheaper workers.... and some things are expensive cos of more expensive parts, or lesser economies of scale in production, or just the maker wants to feed his family or something.... and yes somethings are probably sold on the principle "the more expensive is better" and we end up with fancy AAAAAAAAAA grade woods (whatever that actually means), pickups wound by virgins and stupid over the top inlays blah blah blah... But what gets me a wee bit annoyed is how any discussion about high end basses seems to end up knocking those who do buy high end stuff, (normally with molan argueing the other side), we end up knocking the player..... why? Because I don't get it - our cheap basses are cheap cos it's a mass market commodity- the more that are made the cheaper they potentially can be, and with more competition we get better quality..... right so you have your starter bass.... what do you want to do? upgrade- maybe to a mid range ibanez or a mexican fender... and probably you look second hand and pick one up there for less.... the person selling that is either.... got enough money to have more than one bass - upgrading - or selling up and taking up carp fishing... apart from the last option you are benifiting directly from someone buying something else and probably further up the bass food chain, it's a small market place... and everyone benifits on someone with a lot of money deciding to spend more on something that previously they were mocking people for wanting. *the mythical squier does exist btw, and tends to say squier series and a JV serial.... not that i'm biased!
6. ah that's the high end bass - investment thread again, very nice... anyway on another topic, saw a guy walking down the street yesterday carrying a double bass, turned to the wife and said "that looks fun, can I get one" - so how much is a good double bass cost?
7.
I dont have a really issue with them buying and selling, but i would expect them to contribute to our community rather than just come her to make a profit. This is the reason ive always thought members should rack up some posts before being allowed to sell things (sorry, i know thats off topic)
I find it tiring- go in the affiliates section or something - it's also probably a nice tax dodge - and when you see people just dealing (which isn't that often, but then i've not looked for a while) .... ild rather go to bassgear or bass direct or somewhere with secondhand stock....
8. The thing about basschat a while ago is that you could safely buy something, normally at a bit less than you would elsewhere - try it out for bit and if you wanted sell it, again at about what you paid for it - for me back then on the minimum wage the ability to sell a bass then try out some others for what would essentially be the cost of a courier and a couple of sets of strings... it was great. Thanks folk! But as Kev said earlier, the way it worked was that people wouldn't make a profit or anything and buying something and flogging it on basschat for more was a big no no. A bass I bought super cheap to try and sold at the same price was sold recently by the basschat member. He actually emailed me to ask if I minded him asking the market price - that's class that is! Thats all changed - but I don't think it's purely to do with basschat getting bigger - I think the changes in the economy, the weak pound and people having less money so trying to get as much out of their bass sales as they can. - and you do see some folk who seem just to post on here to sell stuff.... so personally when I sell stuff I don't advertise a super cheap "basschat price" any more, i've tended to stick up a guide price and then expect to sell for less than advertised. Mind you last thing I tried to sell didn't get a sausage of interest - not even the low ballers! Would I sell for more than I bought for? Well not to flip for quick profit - but if after 3-4 years the value of the instrument has changed then market value is fine. Some things I have bought in sorry state and then stripped down and done up and sold for more.... but still cheaper than others.
9. I like the spb-1 i even made a wee sound clip (straight into an imac so v. low tech recording) http://youtu.be/dN9CC0_K9bA?t=1m40s
10.
I imported a Guild B402-A in from the States, one of only 335 made (assuming all serial numbers were issued and started from 1 - and that number is shared between the B402 and the single pickup B401), I guess that counts as pretty rare. Here's a picture of me playing it, wearing a silly hat. Funnily enough I traded it for another lesser spotted beast, a G&L El Toro. One could argue that my G&L Tribute M-2000 is very rare indeed - one of a batch of 24-36 where the factory made a mistake - they were supposed to be the GTB model (white carved top body, black body binding, matching headstock) but instead they came out regular white body with matching headstock with vintage tint on the back of the neck, a combination not normally available in a Tribute. It won't make a bean of difference to its value, but it's got an interesting back story if nothing else
ooh yes... the El toro - stuff of legends that.
11. would have stood a lot higher chance at staying low if you hadn't started this thread!!!
12. My old status shark II bass - two pickups, active 4 stringer in tobacco burst - my first bass and now well played living in birmingham. never seen another one like it. Not many Valenti's this side of the pond appart from the one that RichardDD is selling at the moment, think there's another one or two floating about. Peavey T45 ... even less than T40's
13. now the second highest item in the bass section of Ebay UK
14. search through the sold ones on here, talkbass and ebay - see what they go for... or list what you'ld like to excange for.... pay your dues and stick an advert up to see what happens...
15. still going? The bass is crap, both lutheir and buyer made mistakes. If you want a AC bass talk to molan and buy it via the shop he works in. go and play said bass, or just your bass. or we could add another 18 pages...
16.
Jazz Bass all day long, and then some. My first love. Whenever I look for potential new basses I look through countless different models from countless different manufacturers, including Warwicks. Then what happens? I land right back on a Fender Jazz. The looks of the instrument, astonishing. I mean they probably have the nicest looking body shape of all basses. That neck too. Perfection. Even if it looked disgusting, it'd still be immense. I mean the sounds it can produce. It's the Swiss Army Knife of basses. That's why you can spot them in smokey jazz bars all the way up passed busted up, packed to the brim punk and metal venues and on to massive stadiums featuring sellout rock artists. Versatility. I personally think that Fender struck perfection on the second time round (sorry Precision enthusiasts). Your Streamer might sound gorgeous and has its own pros and cons, much like the instrument that my heart belongs too, but it'll never hold a candle to it.
you can't make a jazz thump like precision.... you can get a streamer's (SS1 4 string) neck pickup closer than a jazz will get....
17.
Use a guitar with the midi pickup and stick it in whatever octave you want Done. Thank me later.

Edited for correction
18.
Assuming you haven't sold your streamer (ran into this thread on the off chance), fit a John East U-Retro preamp. Had one fitted to my streamer and it sounds awesome in active or passive modes
I stuck an ACG preamp in mine - and likewise I can approach fender like territory now...... (only active mind, but with that preamp you don't mind) But.... for a fender sound you can't beat a good fender bass. Boutique what nots, fancy preamps sometimes what sounds best is a good passive fender. The good news is that you can get a very good bass for not a lot. Like go and buy a top of the range USA model if you want - I picked up my jazz in a trade, it has an awesome fender/squier japan neck and it sounds awesome- in terms of value in the trade I think it was under £200 - and it's good. Theres something in the construction, pickups, number of frets.... it just works. Mind you I can get the ACGed Streamer close enough if I want! But don't bass gear have a custom Thumb bass with your name on it at the moment?
19.
Ohhhh... now here's where I sound really dumb. What's valve power stage?
An amp (generally) has two stages in it - a pre amp stage which amps up the signal from the instrument - then the signal goes through eq and any other gubbins and into a power amp that amps it up to the 3000w or whatever that your speaker cabs need. The preamp stage is what the gain knob controls - how much signal goes into this - while the volume knob controls the power amp stage. Solid state power amps can sometimes have valves in the preamp (Eden being the first example in my head) but don't need to be plugged into a cab to work. A valve powerstage (old Ampeg SVT, Fender Bassman etc) needs the resistance of a cab plugged in otherwise things go pop. If your amp has a valve power stage look for some really big valves and a local chiropractor - otherwise you'll probably be fine.
20. gosh, why you got this up again? I prefer it when it doesn't tempt me
21. if valve power stage - yes it needs to be plugged in If not, probably not.
22. Silver series would be 1992, 1982 would be Squier series. What's the serial?
23. never heard of the gold series. do you mean squier series?
24. Pingray wots collection, of sunburst fenders a wall of warwicks above the Aztec sofa, ... Whoever, I forget who, has that Daphne blue jap jazz bass with the white stripe, and Gareths red jv jazz
