1.
A tricky situation... an interesting set of discussions (and diversions) and a happy ending - not quite up there with the Talkbass "Shell Pink 1962 Jazz Bass" episode... but still, what more could you ask for. Well done to everyone involved - especially the BC members responsible for getting an amicable resolution.
I think we would all have to take lots of pills and chain ourselves to our computers or something to get anywhere near the shell pink thread!
 2.
Ha ha - I think I preferred your first answer, because it's exactly what will happen. I'm just in 'that' frame of mind at the moment - everything's in flux. I have a feeling that in three or four months' time, only my two Precisions will remain, and everything else will be different. And I'll probably regret it and buy another Walkabout (it's happened before!). Hearing other people playing my Beck and Jazz at the bash yesterday (both with rounds) was fab. They sounded great but... they ain't a P with flats. Anyway. I digress...
you have one of the nicest Jazz basses I've seen (in pictures) Just saying.
 3.
Who wouldn't want a 60s Fender over a 70s Fender? It's about affordability. I played a 70s Fender for decades and it was very good indeed - but there were certainly some dogs made in the 70s, it's true. Care needed. Try before you buy, etc. Caveat emptor.
I'm not saying you can't find great Fender's from the 70's (or any era really) - more that there is nothing really heritage about most mid-late 70's basses that mean you would be committing some sin to mod them if you wanted too. I used to have a Cimar 1905ash model Jazz bass from 1975 - awesome player, older than the OP's bass, rarer too, never seen another one since- would it be wrong to mod that?
 4.
Yes, 70s Fenders are now considered to be 'heritage' basses. Whether you take that seriously or not depends essentially on whether you're into Fenders - which you most certainly are not - an opinion you like to put forward at every opportunity.
I think that there are plenty of fender heads around too who would say that a mid-late fender isn't that special aswell. 5 years ago on this here forum the consensus was that the 60's ones were good but avoid the 70's ones like the plague. Just cos it says Fender on it doesn't mean it's some kind of holy relic.
 5. sorry. that may have broken some Basschat rules there.... lets try again oh they are possibly amazing, you should defiantly get one. My mate got one and he went from playing in his bedroom to wembley just after. Amazing tone. More power than a superbowl lighting rig and just amazing tone. Will make you play like a pro. Give into your GAS, go on I can feel the wanting rising inside you. Never underestimate how strong the power of the dark side of the force is!
 6.
Cheers, folks. Any more for any more?
What was it that you liked about them? My guess....you'll buy one. Play it for a while and then decide you like the valvey walkabout tone more and go back to that. So if you are thinking of spending money on one, why not not spend the money and keep your roscoe beck?
 7. My suggestion.... be more verbious in your PM's find out what music the fella plays, what he plays currently and so on. Not only is it nice chatting to folk and friendly but it also lets you work out the idiots from the non idiots.
 8.
[sup]you change your mind more than I do!!![/sup] [sup] [/sup]
lack of interest + the exchange rate shifting + being possession of an amazing P bass .... It's not like it's a awful instrument I want to get rid of, or even one I don't like - more that if it did/had sold then I could have picked up the warwick, if it's not going to sell I may as well give up on trying to sell it rather than constant bumping for years. I've no doubt if/when someone wants one of these I'll get a PM even if it isn't advertised!
 9. surely the question should be... will you like it more than the walkabout?
 10.
If that finish is brown burst (which I think it may well be) then there is every possibility that this is a genuine 83 P Bass. The white pup covers are also a clue. However, the butchery that has gone on here diminishes my soul to the extent that I am now going to have a lie down in a darkened room with a cold compress pressed to my brow.
I've no doubt it is a genuine 83 P bass, it's just been butchered!
 11.
and that's a very tasty bass you have there too sir!
it is thank you.... but I'm going to keep it. Basically, the change in the interest rates mean that selling this wouldn't pay for the warwick (in europe) so I'll keep this and maybe in 10 years time be able to get a thumb bass ASWELL. Thanks for looking.
 12.
In my punk covers band, The Daves - before I joined - they played a pub, and there was a bloke who kept booing after every song. At half-time, the singer went to the khazi, and said bloke was in there having a pee. So our singer goes "Boo, that`s a rubbish c*ck, boo". Said bloke took it in jest, and explained "I boo everyone". We now address him, to his face, as Boo Man.
why would people do this?
 13.
The master at play!
I've never really got overwater's shapes... seeing how the body shape fits in with the player I do!
 14.
You cannot expect that the whole membership will feel as warm and fuzzy.
I felt warm and fuzzy when I met you McNach
 15. were they your support band? you could have said hello!
 16.
I hear what you're saying Luke. From a personal viewpoint I don't think I've ever bought a bass purely to make a profit on it. I do buy and sell a lot of stuff but pretty much every bass I buy is because I've really fancied owning it and giving it a try (I'm not including stuff where I've taken something in PX and have said up front I'm only doing it to sell onwards).
hence my point - it depends on the motive. Not everyone is as principled.
 17.
Why would you make an offer based on what the seller had paid? just because you want the bargain he had? Sorry, nope. I know people who have made their living spotting a deal and jumping at it and selling it at full market price (maybe after a bit of work). Most car dealers do it, are you going to walk on to a forecourt and say "Yeah, i saw this one on gumtree last week for £500, so i'll offer you £500, instead of the £1000 you want". My response would be "Well why didn't you buy it then?".
a dealer will be paying tax and other costs, there will also be a guarantee of some kind based on their work. Folk are happy to pay for this. their focus is speculating money on things in order to make a profit. If folk want to do that on Basschat that's fine but I personally would prefer they did it in the affiliates forum like all the other dealers (bass gallery, bass direct, bass gear etc) would
 18.
Anyone remember the Fender CS that was sold on here several times, before finally being advertised for a far higher price? Caused something of stir at the time AFAIR. Opinions on the matter seem to have shifted in the intervening years.
too right- I've been reading this and wondering what has happened to this place in the last few years! Quite a change I think - I always thought there used to be a unwritten rule that you didn't try and make a profit out of buying and selling on here. Yes when ebay/inflation rates/or things generally going up in price get involved it gets more complex.
I'm inclined to agree. Lots of people lose money on most basses they sell. If someone makes a bit of profit now and then I can't see what's wrong?
It used to be if barry sold me a bass for £700 and I didn't get on with it I would sell it for about £700 to someone else - even if the bass could have fetched a wee bit more elsewhere, sticking it up here for £1000 a month later... it's not 'wrong' as such but kinda against the spirit of the thing. But then there are lots of different shades of it being right or wrong - like if I buy a bass and two years later everyone wants that bass so the value has gone up then aye you would stick the price up from what you paid. But if you bought something and 2 min later stuck it up... well the motivation for buying it seems to have been profit and not wanting to own a bass - that's when I think it can get a bit dubious for the forum. If it's about basses and there are small amount's of increase sometimes fine, if it's about folk trying to make a profit off each other then it all gets a bit crappy. (and if it is then shouldn't Basschat should be charging £5 per bass ad or something?) Like I'm fairly good at photography and words - so I can make a bass look nice (which makes it easier to sell), you work in a bass shop so I'm sure could easily sell things through there at a higher price (even after comms) just cos we have the abilty to take something from someone in the community cheaply and turn it into profit through our skills.... it doesn't make it morally right does it?
 19.
It´s a good option but since you're buying a bridge why don't you get a high mass one instead?
cos it's a P bass- the general opinion is that high mass on jazz yes, on Precision no as it softens the perceived attack (thump)
 20. arrgh this bass is beautiful! this may help folk http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Gallery/171/
 21.
I think one of the main factors rounds became more popular is that they're @ 1/2 the price of flatwounds. If they were both about the same, then I think you'd see a lot more flatwound players (when was the last time you tried a bass in a shop that came with flats?).
I always presumed that that was because string makers will make less money off of flats as they will get replaced less regularly!
 22.
pics now added :-)
very nice A thumb is on my shopping list but may have to wait 3-4 years to save up!
 23. My last originals band (a while back now) did really really well given the lack of gigs we really played... and people loved us, why? cos we didn't take it too seriously and had fun. Which the audience could join in. We also were fairly intentional but weren't hanging our pride on being successful - and it showed.
