1. hmmm.... a bass with 3 holes yeah? you'll either need to drill another hole (not fun) or get the bass treble on a blend control. You buy the preamp and it will come with a wiring diagram - wire it up and add the ground and pickups to it and a wire the battery as it will show you. You'll need a stereo jack (3 lugs) but you possibly have that already. It's not too hard As to what one... who knows! Aguilar or Glockenklang make some ones that are around £100 new and nice, cheaper ones run from "brands" to the artec ones you find on ebay everywhere. And then you can spend more if you want! My new pre for my Warwick Streamer cost me £200, which was a bit over the top! Actually if not wanting to spend loads... why not try one of those stingray preamp clones? The fella on here who makes them could possibly sort you out with everything you need to slot right in if you ask nice (and pay)
 2.
I think you'll find a ticket from to Inverness to Dundee will give you slightly more sustain .
change at Aberdeen or Perth?
Both of these posts are pretty much where I`m at too. Although I`ve liked (ok, loved) all the Precisions I`ve had, through Squier Affinity/Standard/CV, to MIM/MIM Classic, US Standards, 70s Precisions etc, the one I`ve settled on is my US 2011 recently bought. I just play the recent US Standards better than the others. And have a CIJ as backup, which is also a darn fine bass, but the US pips it for me.
I'm thinking about it. I wouldn't not play one of the current USA ones - i've not been blown away by them but I wouldn't not play them... My hand prefers the japanese necks slightly. One to try and play is the US vintage reissues ones - the ones of them I've tried have been fantastic. Mind you... I've always found the basschat market place a great place to find great basses with normally a brilliant set up.
 3.
So I see your point, but IMHO, setup is only one of several components which affect the playability of any guitar/bass: - Quality/accuracy of fretwork/fret-dress - Quality/accuracy of fretboard (can't get a low action if there are any major humps) - Quality of neck join (avoid shimming, tighter join == better resonance) - Weight (indirect playability/comfort/resonance/sustain) I agree that nowadays cheap instruments are really very good due to the prevalence of CNC machinery etc, but you can't dismiss setup as irrellevant, otherwise you may find that the bass you've acquired needs loads of expensive fret levelling work doing, re-cut nut, neck shimming etc - all of which is well beyond a few tweaks with an allen key and well beyond most "mere mortals" ability in terms of setup (ie me ) I for one feel much more comfortable (particularly with a fairly high priced instrument) getting something which is already "in the ballpark" setup wise, as it gives me much better confidence that the construction is all good, and that the setup can be tweaked to my preferences without major luthier attention - taking a gamble on an expensive bass with like 8mm action at the 12th fret is just not worth it IMHO, but each to their own
agreed apart from the bit about shimming a neck. That's dead easy. My JV currently sports half a rail ticket from bargeddie to glasgow central
 4.
umm, alternate which half you plug the amp into each time you use it? Then you are using the whole of your amp, albeit at different times.
you know it's got different volumes for each channel on the back - could set one up for live and one for the bedroom.... genius!
 5.
I would seriously consider talking to Jon Shuker He would be able to tailor a j bass to your specifications and preferences. http://www.shukergui...assgallery.html Something from his classic range would probably come in around the 1300 ish mark. Just food for thought
isn't it daft (and awesome) that a bass hand built in the UK for you to order costs a tiny bit more than a run of the mill Fender USA? I know which one I would want!
I Like jazzes too but I prefer a fatter neck, I posted about jazzes with p type necks but got nothing back, jazz necks on p's is more common it seems? Bizzarely the only bass I've found is a cheap entry level aria STB-JB, only 150 new, I'm scanning eBay to see what pops up, be cheap way to find if the idea works, and I've nothing against a cheap WELL set up bass!
I picked up my jazz (see my thread in the builds section) with a slightly thinner than normal P neck on it. It's great
 6. look for a caitlinbread SFT pedal instead (or make a clone) - look up the vids on youtube and you see what I mean
 7.
Oh, I just edited my previous post. The Tecamp website is saying it does run at 2 ohms, but I've no idea whether the specs have changed.
must have done - this is the manual I have... http://www.tech-soundsystems.de/TecAmp/fileadmin/manuals/Manual_Puma1000_engl.pdf
 8.
Are you sure you've got the impedances right? I thought the 1000 ran down to 2 ohms, so should give the full wattage bridged into 4 ohms.
yeah, pretty sure it doesn't run down to 2 ohms
 9.
shame to waste it, give you £100 for it?
it is my only amp though!
 10. It struck me the other day that my amp has two 500w halfs - or 1000w into 8 ohms. I have one 4 ohm cab. And don't really intend getting another.... so it just struck me- I may not ever use half my amp. (and ironically now have a car so the lightweight-ness of it is less of a feature!)
 11.
That does look good. I take it the Molotow paints are about as nasty as any other nitro and need a proper respirator? I'm sort of tempted to have a go at a telecaster body some time, but the faff of trying to find a suitable space and not make myself or anyone else ill puts me off somewhat!
define "need" .... Background.... my first degree was in sculpture... we used to do quite a lot of daft things using materials we shouldn't have used that way... so I guess you learn ways of not breathing in too many fumes. (there was a time late at night when spreading dope on a plane wing type thing I forgot... and didn't sleep much that day! So Molotow is graffiti paint and half designed to be used indoors, it also makes very little dust (ie less stuff in the air) you'll see all the pro graffiti guys wearing masks and I think if you used it everyday then you would. The first body was mainly sprayed outside... which as the weather went cold didn't really work.... I ended up in the basement! Not exactly good ventalation but I wasn't stupid about it and... well it's nice paint so you don't end up with red snot which you would with some paints. It's not nitro cellulose - but Nitro Alkalid which I think is a more acrylic based nitro - GREAT coverage (i.e. if you didn't want to sand back you could do it in one coat) and drys and behaves like nitro does. It will be interesting to see how it wears with time. I'm not expecting it to fade or decolour really. But for £3.50 a tin... it's great stuff and fairly idiot proof. Work somewhere well ventilated and you'll be fine. You prob know it but Underground Solution on cockburn st have them behind the counter.
 12.
Good job - looks great!

Nice !

Looking good!

Looks good!

Love the colour!
thanks guys!
 13. Another option... get another G&L L2000 and stick a new body on it with Jazz pups- If that is the neck that feels "home" for you then maybe that's the answer? (second thought, how close to a jazz sound can a L2000 get, you can do single coil can't you?)
 14.
I think that guy's most obvious problem was that he was a bit of a knob. I've met a lot of guitarists who know very little theory but still behave like that. I don't think knowledge is the issue here!
Aye a knob - but I could deal with that - it was the lack of understanding at how a "wrong" note could even be considered - he obviously knew enough music theory to try and teach me why I was wrong (which I already knew) but not enough to comprehend a dissonant note!
 15.
I'm glad I don't fit that description, but many do and it seems a little harsh on them... each to their own... who are we to judge? Back to the topic - erm, surely a Warwick Thumb 4 Bolt-on? I can't think of a more iconic bass... not their 'top' model, but perhaps one of their most distinctive? Obviously I'm biased
I think any "classic" warwick will be a neck through - made in germany, probably before 1992-94 and depending how good the new ones are after whatever point they went up market again.
 16. is that you singing along there or just moaning orgasmically?
 17. I know a bit more theory than the OP, but not much more. I can memorise a lot less than 200 songs (having the chords written down makes you lazy!) But I can pick up a bass, listen to a song and come up with parts that work and are right and good. And folk seem to like my playing. So I think I'll call myself a musician. Plus a little theory can be a bad thing. Years back in my first band I couldn't make a gig - so a friend of a friend dep'ed for me - that band was mostly really really simple lines and he turned up and wanted to add double thumbing on a song, and could play all this stuff that was technically way beyond me - obviously he had a bit of theory behind him. We had one song where... well the bass was playing the "wrong" notes I think it was something like the keys was on this pattern in some form of A major and the Bass in a pattern based around A minor or something - can't remember exactly - but what it meant was you had these two shifting melodies and you had dissonant tension and release- and I thought it sounded great! (it did) This fella couldn't cope with the "wrong" notes and dissonance so of course had to tell me it was "wrong" and put it all in the major key - hence the song didn't work!
 18.
Technically, they do ;-)
make a difference or a massive difference?
 19. A good mexican (if you find one) can be as good as an american. Having said that the US vintage reissue series is pretty special.
 20. I have tried both high and low mass bridges.... and a lot of the time I don't think they make a massive difference. My preference is for the sound of the normal fender bridge rather than the more decoupled sound of a high mass bridge- but that's just my preference. Where I think they are a massive upgrade is on cheaper basses - I stuck a high mass (badass sort of size/weight) on a friends squier PJ bass- it took a dull sounding bass and livened it up no end. On a already good sounding bass I think it's less of an upgrade.
 21.
sounds about right!! an yh I think Alembics an status could be banged in place of the streamer?
Yeah- I stuck alembic on there and then took them off. Mainly because apart from music only bass players listen too I couldn't think of one Alembic player. I guess John Entwhistle?
 22.
In my opinion... I'm not convinced that everything on this list would be considered a "classic". I think that for something to be considered a "classic" it would have to be easily recognised by Joe Public, not only by Bassplayers - not sure that the Warwicks, MM Rays or the Peavey have done that yet.
ahh but the James Jamerson defence says just cos Joe Public hasn't heard of him doesn't mean he isn't a classic....
