1. I think also... lets take an example.... silddx sticks a bass up for sale. A few of the folk who have been around longer and know him, and maybe even owned/played the bass chip in... it lets other people know that actually the bass is desirable (and if you buy it and don't get on with it you might find it easier to shift) and also that the person is a decent one. There is at least one item in the forsale section that's been there a while, only the seller and the odd newbie post there- and theres a good reason I think why folk who've been on here longer give that particular item a wide berth....
2. I dunno, another way to put it is it's a form of social bumping of the thread. Also you have no idea what's going on behind your back by PM.
3.
Ive been looking for some musicman style radio knobs, and upon finding them on a site, i find out they dont take orders below 250 units.... This is the thing in question http://www.ehcknobs....c105&series=105 Anyone fancy buying 250, and selling me about 3-10 of them ?? So, that being out otherwise, anyone know of a source for some close imitations?
http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp?N=0&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=categorynumber5213 ???
4. effect loop out, something to blend the kick in, and then into the effects loop would be a more sensible option
5. what's the history of this then? how come the stainless steel frets? and it doesn't look like the original nut either? also where the finish is worn down on the neck, I can see a grain is that the wood we are seeing? where are the wenge stringers or is it not down to the wood?
6. photos? rosewood shouldn't have that much grain. you sure it's rosewood?
7. that's great. I don't get it though- it doesn't look anything like a real alembic preamp does it? just another LPF pre, I guess based around a state variable filter and designed to work with alembic pickups.... interesting circuit though
8. take the E string off and stick it on another bass. That will tell you if something on the bass is breaking something in the string. Is the tension the same/similar as the zingy strings?
9.
I spent a considerable amount of time playing 2 artist signatures. IMO they were only marginally better than the Squier VMJ fretless that cost about a tenth of the price.
which tells you something about how good that squier is.
10.
Anyone truly serious about adjusting their lifestyle to live within the average means of the planet would probably find it necessary to give up expensive toys altogether. Spending 9.9x more than your income might be better than spending 10x more than your income, but it's not actually going to make much differences to the practical consequences . . . . in which case we might as well party-on and enjoy ourselves while we can, which seems to be the vast majority's approach to environmental issues.
but but but... there are a number of flaws in these ideas. 1) you are directly linking money to products. It's not been for decades- maybe if we built our economy on what we produce in a material sense then it would but not anymore. So much of money in circulation has been created out of thin air that the argument "x costs so much so therefore has an environmental consequence" doesn't work. I get what you mean, and agree up to a point but it doesn't work that simply. 2) I'm not sure it's an either or option. Yes we could live utterly within our means, or we could not bother, but I don't think I would disparage the small steps. If you go to germany the attitude towards the enviroment and recycling is fundamentally different than in the UK. So maybe that's just a few people making incremental changes but as a policy that can add up to major gains over time. 3) I don't believe the philosophy you seem to suggest - that a serious living within means would ascetically see us give up partying and enjoyment- I think part of life and what makes us human is art and music - it's the debate you have as a student when you meet a load of stuck up "we save the world" medical students - you ask, which is a more important discipline- art or medicine? without one we would die, and without the other would it be worth living? So an ecologically sound life would have music - and also the instruments that make it. Possibly more expensive and valued more than we do today with our super cheap mass produced stuff
11.
I'm pretty sure that sort of TRC came in in the second half of the 90s before the JAN2; the Fortress I bought in 98 certainly had the JAN1 and I think it had that type of TRC. So I think it could be all original from around then. I'd even dare suggest the serial number ends 96, but can't someone drop it into photoshop, up the contrast and read the number clearly?
or just ring their phone number?
12.
I've never had a Warwick bass but I'm quite prepared to believe they are wonderful things. However, I really don't buy the "sustainability" thing. Sustainability isn't really about planting a new tree to replace a bit of wood, it's fundamentally about energy and the fact that our lifestyles are seriously in the red as far as energy is concerned. For the time being we're living the high-life by spending our 'fossil fuel savings', but we know it can't last. It's simply not sustainable. The amount of energy we use is proportional to the amount of money involved. The more money involved, the more energy is used. These are high-priced luxury items and people have to earn a lot of money to pay for them. Earning that money involves using a lot of energy and spending that money sustains a lot of other people in their similarly high-energy lifestyles. So, yes, the wood involved may be 'green' and the low-energy lightbulbs and solar cells used in their factory may be 'green' (although are you aware of the energy-intensive manufacturing processes involved in both those items?), but that's a long way from being truly sustainable. Just a bit more 'greenwash' marketing, I'm sorry to say.
I have no problem with a company who uses lots of tropical woods deciding in some cases not to use them, and in others trying to get them from sustainable sources. Not perfect though. Problem is if every business who makes small steps gets accused of "greenwashing" why would any make the small steps?
13.
but if I make a digital copy of my vinyl albums then sell them, that's illegal.
Yes. But if you made a bit of machinery/softwear that made my MP3's look sound like your vinyl records and then sold it- that's not illegal. In the same way instagram can model old film cameras.
14.
This is the Steed (but without the new neck that's just been fitted: And this is the '65:
nice! i think i prefer the look of the steed! why the new neck? The '65 is nice too of course you can have a blue bass-off
15.
And an original '65J due to arrive soon that's the same colour scheme as the Steed but, if anything, even more 'knackered' looking, lol.
can't wait to see that. I remeber when there were photos of the steed it looked pretty awesome.
16. who cares? stop worrying. does it sound good?
17. May of whatever year it is! It's reasonably recent based on the way the neck is made up.
18. ring them, though squinting at the serial number suggests '09 ?
19.
I just looked at this too - just looks 'wrong' to me somehow (and I don't have an issue at all with relic'd basses usually!)
but it probably makes the dude who has it happy - a bit like your steed bass. Though your steed bass is like an ultimate of a good looking bass! oh, and you've got a 50th Anni Jazz.... ok going way off topic!
20. how can you trademark a sound? You can patent the circuit that makes that sound if it's special enough - but a specfic tone? sure I can deconstruct that and remake it digitally to make a look-a-like, cos it's not the real thing- it's a digital copy.
